270 sniper rifle?

So I'm not in the military nor have I been. However I had someone tell me they had a friend who was ranger and was a sniper and he had an issued .270 sniper. Now I'm calling bull crap but I don't know.

This is just a guess but I would imagine that some snipers can choose what they shoot?

I think some hunting rifles were used in Vietnam. My dad was part of a program that used nuclear weapons in space to knockout Russian spy satellites. You don't hear much about it either. You can google "270 sniper rifle Vietnam" and get some references to SEAL team use. I wasn't there, so I can't really say.

I would be interested in the when and where questions. Was this one day of training during WWII? Was this '06 Afghanistan? I hesitate to call BS without knowing context.

Unlikely. I could maybe see Vietnam, where they were grabbing rifles off the shelves at AAFES, but recently? No.

I did offer to provide overwatch for the clean up crews on the Exxon Valdez oil spill, I was in the navy and had my Rem 700 in 7mm Mag in the ships armory.

Even if it's not true it's not necessarily bs, it may be true in their minds. A lot of vets have very poor knowledge of firearms, and as memories get distant they are highly suspect to incidental alteration. Statistically anyone's memories are not all that accurate. Mistaking the caliber or even service weapon entirely of something they had ten or twenty years ago isn't all that uncommon, but it doesn't mean they are trying to pull your leg. I experienced exactly this with a co-worker that was a VERY stand up guy. Would have been in the army in the 80's. Not a gun guy. Swore his M16 was a .30-06. I tried once to explain the 5.56 thing to him once. He didn't seem to care. Great guy so I left his memory alone.
