Any of you guys used your cams for insurance claims, theft reporting, etc?

Which ones do you like?
Which ones have you found to work best at night?

I've had it for a couple of years now. Never needed it for myself and have offered to send video to a few people where I've captured their accident. No one has wanted the video, so no actual experience in using the video for insurance claims. It is getting a little slower on start up as it gets older, but it still produces good video, day or night. I would get another one.

I've been using one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B2Z7FL8?psc=1

I picked it a few months ago when it was on sale for $18 ?. It is easy to move between my personal vehicle & work truck.

Haven't needed to use any recordings for any claims yet, but did record some idiot drivers and close calls.

Watch some of the You tube "Stupid Drivers" videos and you will want to cover yourself with a dash camera of some sort.

I did see a dash cam windshield camera at the Walmart Service Center on clearance for $15 here in COS. Down from $20ish a couple of weeks ago. Might wanna check yours if want something to try on the cheap.

How do you like the night footage? Good enough to catch a face and a plate?

Looks like he transferable form factor I'm after

Download the free app. to your devise for storing or viewing the footage, it is very good in day light, and whatever is illuminated by headlights or streetlights is very legible.
The viewing angle is lacking, but good. No fisheye effect.

Thanks for the link. Just got two of the AD250's for our vehicles @ $42 per. Been kicking around the idea of dashcams and glad to finally take the plunge. I'd imagine the cost of a dashcam would easily be paid for any he said/she said accident where footage proves the other party at fault.

I've gone through 3 of these. They die after 6months-1year.

Two stopped recording (I use a sandisk micro SD, so I know it's not the card), and one has a weird line and buzz when recording.

I've stopped buying them. Video Quality was pretty good for the price

I currently use this one now - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A4YUITY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's a video from it

Nighttime - https://youtu.be/VUWyxHHmNrE

I didn't want GPS or speed. It has great audio recording to document conversations when being pulled over

Has anyone used a camera that's integrated into the rear view mirror? Seems less likely to draw attention / attract thieves for an easy score. They seem a bit more expensive though. I just looked at this one, I like how it replaces the entire mirror instead of clamp to the original one. Any pros/cons I'm missing?

I thought about the rear view mirror version to upgrade the cheapie unit that have, but then I would cover up (stick over type) or lose (replacement type) the mirror functions, like auto dimming, compass direction and temperature displays. Also, the fact that I move the camera between my truck & the work truck on a daily basis, the one I have is easy to transfer.
If you don't have these functions, yes, it would be less attractive to thieves.

I have a Rexing V1 dash cam. The night vision could be better, but I'm pretty happy with it, otherwise.

Ignore the date stamp, I only got around to setting that up this weekend. This was recorded in November.

I had the CDR 840. It was fine except sometimes the shock sensor would be over sensitive and it would fill up the SD card with protected files. The internal battery stopped charging a few months ago so I am getting it replaced under warranty. They are sending me a CDR 875 G to replace it.

Here's my thread from April of last year on the same topic. There are a few other cameras mentioned in there. https://www.ar-15.co/threads/155748-Dash-camera?highlight=Dash+Camera

I got my wife this one: https://www.amazon.com/KDLINKS-X1-Dashboard-Camcorder-G-Sensor/dp/B00N8BM0BU/ref=sr_1_1?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1461161129&sr=1-1&keywords=kdlinks+x1

She really likes it. It stays in the car all the time, and has turned a beautiful burnt orange on the front. It actually looks like it's supposed to be that color, and it took me a while to realize that it didn't come that way. She really likes it, but the one time she tried to get footage off of it for some traffic issue, she got an error on the SD card file. It worked when we first tried it, so I'll have her try it again and report back.

I'm probably going to get one for my work vehicle as well this year (and should have gotten one last year). I may try one of the other linked options in this thread, as many of them are less expensive. However, I may go for a fancier model that does front, rear, and side, especially since I park on the street and drive a LOT of miles each year.

Here is a screen shot of footage from tonight. You can see plates, but only when stopped at a light and the first few feet after everyone starts moving. For the record, I'd probably pick my nose IN court. I'm that kind of classy. ;)

So here's the first "Hey, we got that on video!" from the new dash cam:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YSYpBgFz9Q

First few seconds look about 150m to the 1 o'clock where the Dakota slams into the parking bumper trying to get out of a lot.

A few notes on the AUSDOM AD250:

Tried it originally with a class 4 micro SD, which was purchased before reading the instructions which say class 6 or up. It still recorded with the class 4, but in like... 20 second chunks. With the class 10, I can loop it 10 minutes at a time with no discernible delay in starting the next file.

So, for around $110 total, I have two vehicles outfitted w/ a camera and 32GB micro SD. Auto-start, can set for motion detection in front of vehicle ( I turned off because it's sensitive to clouds/lighting and records randomly -- I might change that since it simply loops back when the SD is full and records over, so I'm not exactly losing anything by having it on), can loop from 0 (continuous record I guess), 1, 2, 5, or 10 min; has a night mode but haven't tried that yet.

Audio isn't superb, as you can tell, but would be fine enough for if pulled over. I'd probably run the phone on record anyway since if I had to turn off the vehicle it only records for 3 min max (setting).

Why do the traffic signals appear to flash? Image sampling rate or something?

I've personally watched a dash cam video that took a liability decision from 50-50 to 100-0. They are worth the protection for the price.

I'm not sure what sort of lights are being used, but I'd guess it's the fact that the frames per second is not in sync with the lights, similar to how airplane props can appear still or very slow on video.

----

Rondog -- my costing was for 2 vehicles and 2 microsd cards. So, what... like ~$55 (probably a little more, as I got a 2-pack of cards -- but I'd recommend that anyway as then you have another card to slip in if your other one is taken for evidence) to not have some schmuck try to pull a fast one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OTS106ZCuw

Besides that, as Irving mentioned, it can show shared fault claims to be bogus.

Also, might allow you to get some neat video of others' stupidity. Kinda wish we'd had a dash cam in Iraq as Iraqi drivers pulled some crazy stuff and who doesn't love a good IED video?

I really like the dashcams, I'm looking for one myself. A few times they have come in handy to help assign fault to the other driver, when it would have been a toss up due to no witnesses, which I think would be costly for the person who wasn't at fault.

At an accident scene, can an officer demand to review footage?

No matter what happened pro Tip: The 1st thing you do after an accident is take the dash cam off and toss it in the glovebox, or whatever equivalent action you can take. Whether or not you're at fault, they're at fault, it doesn't matter. I wouldn't mention you had a dash camera at all. Of course, that's after you've checked to make sure your passengers are ok, unless of course, they have substantial life insurance policies, then do the dash camera thing first.

:D

On a more serious note though, you won't even know if you "got it" until you review the files. And the last thing you want to do is give your only copy of your SD to someone else. The officer could lose it, not give a shit at all, or he might even be a 2nd cousin to the other driver. Not only that, but you may very well lose the entire poker game if you have a "tell" and that applies to anything involving scumbags in life, and you don't yet know if you collided with a scumbag. Let them know what you have prematurely, and they'll adapt their story to accommodate it. On top of it all, if your camera is recording audio, the last thing you want to do is share that without reviewing EVERYTHING first. There's no telling what conversations you may have recorded that you do not want to "share" with LEO or your potential adversary.

So step one: Check on passengers. Throw dash camera into console or glovebox.
Step two: Check on your other passengers.
Step three: Reluctantly check on the other driver and their passengers.

Don't point back at your car and say "I HAVE A CAMERA JACKASS". Let them make their statements to police first, aight people? Then come back with your insurance company.

I'd like to get the Garmin GPS with the rearview camera license plate frame. It helps with backing up.
Also has:
Live Traffic, Live Parking, Live Weather
& Live Track -via Smartphone Link App

The old one I had died. It used to tell me when I was near an accident scene. I have an obsolete Magellan for now. It has a camera too. I don't usually use the camera function, unless there is an incident. Two sets of video is better than one!
The GPS has a "Where am I now" which is great to be able report where you are in unfamiliar terrain.
If it gets really crazy, I breakout the laptop. Mil Spec Dell 7424 maxed out with a "Street Atlas" program and external "LT 20" GPS sensor. With "Topo USA" program I can navigate Forest Service Roads. Laptop has internal GNSS that can use any nations satellites. External sensor and programs are from defunct Delorme Co., but still work great. Most of these item were bought on Ebay and are now available dirt cheap.

An example:

I asked officer to review the video before ticking me for following too closely. She said she does not and court had to.

Now if I may add as general....
Video clip is great for insurance fraud turds who hit you and try to sue your insurance company for $100k.

I had to hire my friend who does PI part time for insurance company (basically nearly free) to get a video footage of that turds. After getting some good footage of lying sack of shit, their attorney and insurance settle for 5% of what they wanted. :)

Buy what ever you can get or afford. Better having below average dash cam than nothing.
I am planning To buy one for my aunt. She got hit and got sued by lying insurance frauding sack of crap in Los Angeles.

My dash cam plugs into the OBD which I like a lot more than the cigarette lighter style. Much more out of the way, no cords hanging around the center console or anywhere else visible. Plus, it doesn't rely on batteries to record when the vehicle is turned off. My vehicle can be parked for weeks and it will still come to life and record clips if there are any bumps detected.
