View Full Version : Home Defense AR Safe

Anyone have experience with a good way to store an AR for home defense that is:
1) Kid Safe - Not just hidden (doesn't have to be hidden), but locked.
2) Quick Access in an Emergency.
3) Doesn't require major installation (cutting into the wall, etc - simple mounting and drilling is ok)
I've searched and seen many different things advertised, but would love to hear from anyone who actually uses them. Pros and cons, reality versus ad claims, etc.
One of the hidden shelf options that are flooding the market?
Kids are smarter then dogs. Might as well teach the kids about firearms and remove the mystery.

Very nice! But I don't see anything on your site that gives the H/W/D dimensions of them, is it there and I'm just missing it?
I use this gun locker with the key around my neck 24/7.

have you considered the under the bed route?
https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Vault-under-bed-safe/dp/B00CIDGA0G/?tag=ssafety-20
i've been looking for a small safe for upstairs for 1 or 2 guns only, but cannot find anything that small that's much more than a glorified stack-on.
something like this, but would like more security
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FDIUPE/ref=asc_df_B005FDIUPE4796760/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B005FDIUPE&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167124607404&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4859194944388198658&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028744&hvtargid=pla-272348729222
Liberty doesn't have anything that small, nor does AMSEC nor Ft. Knox. I tried to get Sturdy to build one that small and they wouldn't, either.
about the smallest two i could find that seemed worth a crap was this AMSEC and Liberty, but both are much bigger than i'm looking for:

Why do you feel you need anything more than a glorified stack-on for only two guns?

That sorta begs the question. Perhaps they're expensive guns? Perhaps I want some semblance of deterrence and/or fire protection, also. But, I've wrestled with that very question.
but why wouldn't you want to provide the same level of protection for 1 or 2 home defense guns at the ready versus the rest of your collection?

I've used this amsec for the past three years.
It has served me well with zero complaints.
I believe that I paid $325 at a lgs.

Do you bolt that amsec drawer to the floor? Or mount it on the bottom of your bed frame?
Currently mounted to the bed frame.
That sorta begs the question. Perhaps they're expensive guns? Perhaps I want some semblance of deterrence and/or fire protection, also. But, I've wrestled with that very question.

I think I'm under the impression that non-commercial safes are all pretty much glorified stack-ons. If you can cut through the side with a grinder, it doesn't really matter how many thick metal posts are in the door, or how much it weighs. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about a 30 minute fire rating. Running through the scenarios of a house fire where a safe is subjected to only 30 minutes of an intense fire before being put out seems about as statistically low as a house fire in the first place.
I'm not trying to talk anyone out of having a large safe, especially if they have nice guns (I certainly do NOT), but it seems to me that a dedicated home defense gun isn't going to be rare, or irreplaceable. If there is a larger safe somewhere else in the house to hold nicer guns, then even less of a reason for something fancy for immediate access.

Not sure if this would work for an AR but I've got a shotgun locked with the Ruger rifle lock and connected to an eye bolt. Unlocks with a key.

I just got this for our master bedroom:
http://bestgunsafeusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/BARSKA-Quick-Access-Biometric-Rifle-Safe-2.jpg
It's called the Barska Quick Access safe. It's big enough to hold a rifle or two and some mags. It uses biometric scanner to give access and you can save as many fingerprints as you want in there. I've had my eye on them in the past but when it went on sale for like $170, I had to go for it. I realize its not a real "safe" but it was affordable and lets me keep some better options other than a pistol in my bedroom safely. It also lets my wife have access without having to remember a combo.

It's a SecureIt locker (model 72). It weighs 240lbs alone. With its contents, mine probably tips 800lbs. It's also bolted to the floor and anchored to a metal post. It's not being carried away. I was going to get a traditional gun safe but after a lot of reflection I didn't see the logic in a safe. The locker affords me a lot more storage in a more compact space.
I just looked at the price.$1599 WOW, that is expensive for what you get or dont get. There are so many better options for that price.
The Fatboy Jr safe was my reference point. Same price but significantly less storage capacity while taking up more physical space. I did not consider cheaper safes after doing a lot of research and reading reviews. I could have purchased the SecureIt Model 52 for much less but I needed more capacity.

That one looks fantastic. Love the modern styling. Hides in plain sight really well. Any feedback on the prototype?

No feedback from me, but I've been seeing their ads for about 6 months now. I didn't realize they were priced so high... I incorrectly assumed (based on the features) that they would cost about $350. I love the myriad of options to open them. Their handgun safes look pretty good too, but it looks like they are really about tamper resistance (kids, friends, etc) and not actual security of the weapons. I think the best "feature" is its inconspicuous design. To someone who has never seen it before, it just looks like a speaker system or air purifier.
Get something from tactical walls, I think a member use to make something like it too! Floating shelf that can decorate and can have it anywhere in the house.

7220272203I found Rough Country Rustic Furniture online as they were offering a sale on concealment flags. Locks with magnet over each door. Easier than a dial lock or noisy digital lock when you need it. Quality is top notch but shipping too forever.

I had a smaller pistol lock box that mounted between the wall studs, it had a key, but you can probably get one with mechanical buttons. similar to this:

something more like this - don't know what id would cost to get the mechanical push button lock on it:
