Didn't find any threads discussing smart watches, so I figured I would start one.

After watching YouTube reviews and perusing some of the tech forums, I've decided to order the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. I've always been into the latest smart phones, particularly Samsung, and only really started checking out smart watches when I saw the S3 Frontier, mainly because It's the only one that is actually aesthetically pleasing to me.

From what I understand the S3 (Tizen OS) is still lacking in the app department, but for the price, it will do everything I need it to, with style.

Anyone here use a smart watch on a daily basis? What are you using? Any experience with the S3 Frontier?

Here is the factory pic that caught my eye.

I tend to be a bit of a gear queer, so I've thought of getting one. Do they have to be charged every night? I believe the Apple watch does, so I assume they pretty much all have to. That's one of the things that keeps me from buying one. I have enough crap to charge at night.

That's a good looking one though. I like that a lot.

I have a Galaxy Gear S2. It was a free promo when I ordered my Galaxy S7 Edge. I use it every day. I could make phone calls from it and forward my S7 # to it in a pinch (3G vs. S3's LTE), but it feels really weird talking to my watch. Maybe it's too much Dick Tracy. It tracks my activity, heart rate and other shhhhtuff and costs me $5/month to have it on my plan. I'm not sure I would buy it at retail, but I wanted to dip my toe into the wearables market to see what I really wanted when/if I spend my own money. I haven't tried using Samsung Pay from the watch...yet. I usually have about 60% battery left when I charge it for the night.

Many of the Gear S3 watches are ginormous. I'm not a fan of huge watches. They bigger they are, the more likely I'm going to smack them into something...hard. The S3 Frontier looks nice.
Not my image, but a comparison of display sizes of S2 & S3;

I have had issues with a 3rd party watch face where sometimes it goes off in the weeds and consumes the battery.

The Gear S2 is capable of far more than what I use it for. I'm in IT and I really like the email/calendar and messaging notifications. It's a very vanilla watch with the smooth bezel. I certainly paid a lot more for my non-smart titanium Tissot that I don't wear anymore.

I had the Gear S2 for about a year then I dropped and broke the back glass....geek squad payed off. Got all my money back and bought the Gear S3 last week. I like it way more than the S2. I like that I can talk thru my S3 which I couldn't do with my S2 because it was Bluetooth only (my S3 is also Bluetooth only but have a mic and speaker). As for the battery life, it's pretty good. I have to charge it every third day with normal usage.

I use the Samsung Gear Fit. It can go a couple days without recharging but I try to recharge nightly. The Gear Fit does all I need it to -- adjust time zone when I travel, give me a quick snapshot of text messages and alerts, track my walking/exercise. and measure my heartrate. I'm not really looking for much else from a screen the size of a watch.

What kind of functions do you guys use the watch for that aren't accomplished by your phone already? Is it just a convenience thing to be able to glance at your wrist for certain things instead of digging in your pocket for the phone?

Good question. I have an employee at work who has had one of these for a few months and she is constantly staring at her wrist. Soon we'll see reports of "smart watch syndrome" with people having elbow problems or some shit.

I don't know, they seem cool from a tech standpoint, but I think I get distracted enough by a phone in my pocket.

Besides, I don't like wearing a "regular" watch.

I know the S2 has a mic and speaker if you get the 3G version which is $5/mo. The S3 Bluetooth only version has a mic and speaker so I can have a phone conversation without having to pay $5/mo for the service.....plus side of having a 3G version is you can leave your phone at home or wherever and still make calls with your watch

Anyone else? I'm a big fan of optimizing and spend a lot of time in areas where reaching into my pocket for my phone ranges from inconvenient to dangerous. Just trying to gauge if there are functions that would be useful to me.

The top two reasons for me wanting the S3 Frontier are fitness tracking and aesthetic appearance of this particular watch. The following are bonuses that pushed me to pull the trigger.

- Stand alone GPS
- Samsung Pay
- Calculator
- SOS mode.
- Calendar

There may be other features I'm missing, but these are the ones that came to mind. Also, I'm not near my phone during work, so to be able to input calendar reminders, nutritional and fitness data etc, and then have it sync with my phone is invaluable to me. Not to mention you can easily drop this type of money on a G-Shock or similar that doesn't do any of the Smart stuff.

I really like the idea of not having to reach for my work phone when dangling off a 12/12 extension. Particularly if I can just scream at my wrist to call someone to come put the ladder back up. Not a situation I find myself in very often these days, but I would have had ample opportunity to find virtue in the tech a few years back.

No worries, I was actually going to give a shout out to Samsung Pay in the thread. It's the best thing since sliced bread IMO, and I pretty much use it exclusively when I can, which is pretty much everywhere. I have it set to use thumb print, and it's pretty much been flawless. With the watch, I would just type in a PIN and hold the watch up to the card machine, and bam.

You earn Samsung rewards, however I'm not really familiar with what they actually do for you, I need to research a bit more, as I'm earning quite a few.

My primary credit card registered to Samsung Pay gives me cash back. Never looked into the new rewards program. It works pretty much everywhere since the phone communicates with the head on the card swiper. I've even used it at places where the checker says "We don't have that." and is totally surprised by the transaction.

Apple Pay requires special equipment and I haven't run across any places that use it.

I also have the Chase app installed and get immediate notification of the transaction as well.

Bump with an update after receiving my S3 Frontier, and using it for a day and a half.

This thing is freaking awesome, and due to the watch face and band options (standard 22mm), the aesthetic possibilities are endless.

I've purchased 4 faces so far, with the most expensive one being $1.55, I found my favorite for daily use, but different faces display different info, so I can use a certain one depending on the activity (for instance, there is a face that displays all your S health info that would be handy while working out).

Here is my favorite, and the one I plan to use day to day:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170205/68ab8075b2c6b18812ccc7b9b391cfdb.jpg

You can change the background design as well as the color of the hour numbers and digital time readout.

I used samsung pay for the first time a little bit ago, and it worked awesome as expected, my only complaint is it doesn't seem to be synced with the same account as I've been using on my phone, so I don't think that transaction counted towards my previous points, but I plan to get that figured out.

I will be going to the gym in the morning so I'll see how the watch performs with S health during a workout.

If anyone is interested I'll continue to post updates.

It's all digital and the screen is just black when it's off. You can choose always on, and the screen will display all the time, which obviously will drain the battery quicker. If you choose the other option, the display will turn on when you turn your wrist to look at the watch.

Best I can find for the Gear is an archery timer, but there are a bunch of timers that I haven't messed with, and new apps coming out all the time. I can definitely see the value in having a shot timer on your wrist, and the watch is certainly capable of it.

I suspect they could even measure recoil. Probably wouldn't work for comparing between people. But for the same person, it should be possible to compare different handguns as well as ammo loads on the same gun. Alas, I don't have the coding skills to make it so.

The watch will detect certain types of exercise, and steps, so it is definitely capable of detecting recoil. Ultimately I think app development will be determined (as with everything) by demand and popularity. Apparently smart watch popularity has taken a decline lately, with Google putting their smart watch introduction on standby.

I read this thread earlier in the week and was very surprised at how far smart watches have come. The S3 Frontier is sweet.

So I did some research and decided I'd put one on my list to save up for.

Two days later, I get an email from AT&T offering a S3 Frontier for $49.99 if I were to upgrade my phone.

I was overdue for an upgrade, so they lured me in. I'm the proud new owner of a S3 Frontier now and love this thing.

A bit of an update on my end, especially with new Frontier owners.

I love Samsung Pay more and more, each time I go to the market. The transaction is even more seamless than on the phone, I even forgot my debit card the other day, but it didn't matter because of Samsung Pay.

The more I use the fitness tracking, the more I'm learning it's faults, but it has potential for sure, and still works quite well. The treadmill and standard running modes work well, and heartrate/calorie tracking is pretty accurate.

So far my main complaint is finding a "mode" that will accurately track heartrate and calories while weight lifting. Myself and a few others on a Samsung forum have reached out asking for an update that will include weight lifting mode, but for now it seems like elliptical mode is most accurate while weight lifting.

Battery life is pretty good, although I don't buy the claimed time. Either way I charge it like I do my phone, nightly.

That's it for now.

After wearing the watch a bit more, I've got some more feedback. I started charging every other night, and that seems to be about perfect, I use the workout tracker for approximately 45-90 minutes each morning, and that's really the only function outside of display and other background stuff that pulls from the battery. The heart rate and workout options are still leaving a lot to be desired, and I've teetered the idea of going back to a dedicated fitness watch, either Fitbit or Garmin, but I love the other features too much, and I'm not interested in wearing two different devices. I'm hoping Samsung will listen to it's users and push out a software update to correct the issue. With a recent update, the S3 now has the Underarmour "record" and "Myfitnesspal" apps available, so that has been a huge plus, as I track my food intake.

For those who have this watch, I highly recommend ditching the factory rubber band, in favor of a nylon "NATO" style band, I recently made the swap and couldn't be happier, comfort level is a huge improvement, and even with drenching it in sweat daily, there is no "stench". I've got a black and olive band, with a desert khaki band on the way (I'll post pics with each installed once I get the new band). Overall I'm still very happy with the watch minus the fitness tracking (which isn't terrible, just could use some tweaking), and I get tons of compliments, even from die hard Apple watch guys (many have asked if the S3 will work with their Iphone, which it will).

I didn't buy the watch with the intention of using the text feature much, but I must admit, I've built up my instant reply library, and I find myself using it for quick responses more often than not. As for the phone call feature, I confess, I'm not on the phone much, preferring text, but I can see it coming in handy for hands free while driving.

But I do have numbersync turned on.

So I tried to disconnect numbersync and reconnect. No dice.

Also, I was perusing the Galaxy store for new watch faces and stumbled across the "watchmaker" app. Apparently it's an app that you can use to make your own faces, and then share them with other users. I picked up a couple different Luminox faces that are pretty cool.

IMO the first Huawei Smatwatch is a better watch & you can find great deals on them as they're a couple of years old. You can get a steel bracelet for them on Amazon for like $12 shipped. I just gave mine to my wife after a year or so of use and I personally went with an LG Urbane 2 which is also a fantastic watch you can find a great deal on. The downside is the band can't be changed with others like most Wear enabled watches so make sure you like the look of it before you buy. Personally, I love the look as is so I didn't want/need a different band. I really dig this watch and the three button layout of the newer style Wear watches allows me to set two short cuts with the top and bottom buttons. The one downside is that the center button regularly gets pushed whenever I bend my hand back from my fat wrist. A quick search online leads me to believe that my wrists might not be abnormally large as it seems to happen to lots of folk. Either way, fantastic watch and I recommend either of the two and I've owned dozens (literally) of smartwatches going back to the original Sony Smartwatch 1.

Well I ended up with the Huawei, both Amazon and Best Buy shot the Samsung back up to $300, and I found an Open box "excellent" Huawei for $207.99 at Best Buy, so I jumped on it. I'll reply back with my initial thoughts after I spend some more time with it.

PS this pic doesn't do the colors and clarity justice, I'll try to get a better one later.

Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkI got it from the "Watchmaker" app, I don't recall who makes it, but if you download the app and search Suunto, you should find it (if they are making for the Samsung). Do you have the new Galaxy watch? If so, how do you like it? Thinking of selling my Android and getting the Galaxy.

I've got my eye on the new Galaxy Watch, but haven't pulled the trigger.

I really like the 46mm stainless. My Galaxy Gear S2 is getting a bit long in the tooth. I really don't need LTE on my watch.

I bought the Galaxy Gear S3 Frontier as an upgrade to my Gear Fit. Am very happy with it after 4 months of use so far.

Looking very closely at the Garmin "Instinct", it doesn't have near the features of a full blown smart watch, but I'm finding I don't use the bulk of smart watch features, and the instinct has several outdoor features that most smart watches either don't have, or are mediocre at best.
