View Full Version : RTD security officer shot and killed
Very sad, the security officer was answering questions from two women about using light rail when the suspect walked up behind him, shot him and ran off. Captured about 20 minutes later, thanks to video from nearby businesses as well as witness info. An obvious part of the investigation is whether he was targeted due to his uniform.

He hasn't been on in a couple days, but I don't think he's quite as old as the reported age of the victim. Hopefully he will chime in soon.

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified the security officer killed as Scott Von Lanken, 56, of Loveland.

Condolences to all RTD security and contractors. Some pretty cool folks working security on the trains.
IMHO, it's one of countless examples of why the Supreme Court should not have outlawed public hangings in this country.
Man I work right over there some days. Very sad and unfortunate, RIP sir.

RIP, sad that we are used to Officers being killed by the numbers. Hopefully this soon changes as it is clearly a trend.
My apologies for not chiming in earlier on this. I am a dispatcher for the RTD Transit Police Dispatch center. We handle all dispatching for our contract police and security personnel. I used to work the rail as security, but I haven't in over 5 years.
I knew Scott VonLanken. He was a great man and a damn good officer. He stopped off in our dispatch center about 2 weeks ago just to say "hi" to myself and another dispatcher. I will never forget his firm handshake and his great personality. He was always quick to help out when needed and did so without complaint.
Scott was our first line of duty death in the history of RTD security. My prayers, heart and thoughts go out to his wife and children. He will be greatly missed.

DENVER (CBS4) – The man charged in the murder of a Regional Transportation District security guard says his actions that night were to please Allah.
Joshua Cummings, 37, is charged with the Jan. 30 murder of RTD security guard Scott Von Lanken. What happened was a cold blooded murder — a shot to the head — but the reason behind it is still unclear. From his jail cell, by phone, Cummings told CBS4 three days after his arrest he pledged his allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State.
“I give my bay’ah (pledge) to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and I am committed to being a soldier for the Islamic State,” he told CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger.
Cummings would not say if he committed the murder.
“On the night in question, what I did do, I didn’t do that for the Islamic State. I did that purely and solely for the pleasure of Allah,” Cummings said.
He would not explain why his actions that night would have been for God.
Cummings was found a short time after the killing nearby with a gun the same caliber as the shells found at the murder scene. He was carrying Islamic literature. He says whatever he did that night was not in the name of ISIS.
“The reason why it was not for ISIS is because in 1996 I took a pledge to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States, and if you obey officers appointed over me,” he said. “And the president, commander in chief of the United States, the military and I ratified that in ’97.”
Cummings said while in jail it took him three days to purge that oath by reading he Koran and dedicate his allegiance to the Islamic State.

When asked if he knew the person who died that night was not a police officer he said he could not answer that at this time.

Squeeze can correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Allied Universal (formerly Allied Barton) have the RTD security contract? We have a lot of those guys working the front checkpoint at our courthouse. All very nice, decent, hard working folks who, IMHO, do not get paid nearly enough for the dangerous job that they do. They're not cops but are just as exposed, in uniform (thus just as big of a target as LE), and work crappy hours for little pay at a thankless job. A couple of our security officers knew Scott, couldn't say enough nice things about him. Truly is awful what happened, and I hope the killer rots (both in prison and in hell). Security officers never get enough recognition, so to all of you on here who are in that line of work, thank you! You have my admiration and appreciation.

Then send him to see allah. NOW! No compassion for some DB who murders an innocent person to feel better about their life. Obviously mentally unstable. Now that he will got to trial, he can be idolized like every other coward who wants a fast track to fame. And yes, the media will be there to shepherd them to the top.
