View Full Version : Out of a job at the end of the month.
Well, it looks like I'll be out of a job at the end of the month due to loss of contract funding.
Anyone have tips for hunting for jobs in the DoD space? I've set up accounts on a few sites, and have sent out a few applications.
What about recruiters? Are they worth talking to?
What's your specialty? Have an active clearance? Feel free to PM if you don't want that public on here.
ETA: yes, recruiters are worth talking to if you aren't being head-hunted already

Recruiters are okay sometimes. I've actually landed all my post college jobs through them. However, that usually means talking to a thousand of them before you get anything that is actually a fit.

Recruiters are fine, but you have to weed out the terrible ones to find decent ones. I've been dealing with some recently while I test the waters for a new gig. I've worked with Tek Systems and Apex in the past and had good experiences with them.
Let us know what you do for a living; I may have some recommendations if you're in infosec.

I haven't gone the recruiter route to give any insight there. I keep an eye on Indeed.com and they have a pretty deep list of postings. What area do you work in?

What's your specialty?
I'm in a bit of a transition, started doing graphics, ended up getting pulled into doing DoDAF, network analysis and systems architecture support.

You should be fairly marketable if you have experience doing DODAF and network analysis combined with an active clearance. I tend toward keeping all options open so there's no harm in talking with recruiters but I'd be pressing the Bubbanet hard. You or a recruiter could put your resume into corporate HR systems but most of the companies I know of will take a much harder look at someone who is being vouched for by a current employee. There are a few companies in town that help AFSPC build the DODAF products they need to get programs through JCIDS and experience with systems architecture and network analysis ought to be in demand for cyber protection as well as acquisition for programs that are now being told they have to be multi-domain or at least multi-mission.
If you have .mil experience and still pretty fit. Probably a bit of a step back for you, but as a holdover my job is pretty popular for folk waiting to get into other fed jobs etc, lots of free time and flexibility. Tricky getting in though.
Also interested about if you have a clearance and if so what level. You can PM me.
You need to walk over to the Broadmoor and hit the Cyberspace symposium this week!
The amount of facets of employment this site has connections with never ceases to amaze me. It seems like it does not matter your specialty someone has an opportunity

Sorry to hear this, I may be unemployed on the 28th as well, new company got the contract and right now they don't seem real interested in the current employees.
We will see

You got that right, I've been with the same company for 10yrs and I'm more than likely going to be let go because I can no longer lift 80lbs...according to a company doctor. Wrenching on trucks is all I really know that pays well so idk where the hell to go from here.

If you are doing network stuff and have tickets. PM me. Send me a resume.

As one of Justin's former bosses, he has my recommendation should anyone have a position for him.

Thank you! We did some pretty great work together.

I hate working on cars.
Hate it.
I'll happily build AR15s all day, but turning wrenches on cars just doesn't hit my brain's reward center in the least.

Working on motorcycles will make pretty much anyone insane, ask my wife...

Do understand that there is a hiring freeze. I know because I am waiting on orders and have been frozen after everything was in place. [Mad]

Is that affecting contractor employees too? My company alone has like 53 unfilled slots for our location. I'm sure the other subs and main have tons as well.

The .fed hiring freeze does not/can not affect contractor employees, just .gov workers. Sadly, this does affect Jerrymrc.

*jawdrop* You're kidding. That's horrible!
Just a quick update.
Thanks to those of you I've sent resumes to. You've been awesome and I've already gotten some interest. I know I need to get resumes out to a couple more of you, but I'm in the midst of re-writing it (again) to make the thing more readable.
Again, I seriously appreciate the help I've received here. You guys are great.
Sent you a PM about open positions that I have.
