I bought a 100 rd box at wal mart yesterday and the primers pockets look like they have sand/dirt/crud in them some are blackened as well. I am going to e mail winchester. this is bs.
I will get pics shortly.
INSPECT YOUR AMMO at the store if possible.
Just checked and the 100 rd box of 45 is fine as well as the 44 mag and 270.... weird.
someone at the store may be replacing with cheap reloads, call the store as well

possibly as the box is not glue sealed like the .45.... but the rest of the rd looks like new mfg stuff like I have bought before... it also doesnt brush off either...

It's probably that DNA trace substance the Gun Czar was talking about.

Actually you may be right....
That is strange though, I've bought several WWB 100 round packs of .40 from Wally World and never seen anything like this. I will keep my eye out for similar incidents and report. Let us know what they say!
I would send those pics to winchester and ask what it is! Very curious, keep us informed!

I have seen that before, I believe it is from a dirty primer pocket forming die.

Maybe if you only like shooting pretty brass! Otherwise you'll be fine.

I don't think so, they were very anal when They sold me the wrong ammo and I did not relize it till I almost walked out the door, I went to the return counter and they were saying I could not return it, I told them I have not left the store yet look at the store cameras, they did and I got a refund
A while back The Firing Line got a bunch of American Eagle .50BMG rounds off their delivery truck...at least 1 box, all the rounds were scuffed and scratched and had extractor marks on the casings...

The highly doubt the ammo pictured are reloads. That appears to be some factory disfunction going on there. You can't get completely rid of striation marks on the head of the case if once shot, and there would definately be some sort of extractor call marks on the rim area.

This is another thread that I've misssed for the first couple of days...
Those rounds look horrible. I agree that this looks like a manufacturing issue but I can't imagine how in the heck Winchester could have let ammo like that past their quality inspectors.

Honestly, I would just go shoot it. Check the spent cases after the first one or two and if the primers are sealing and no overpressure, all is good. It appears to be more cosmetic than anything.

to bring this back from the dead. They sent me $40 in coupons for ammo. Said there was nothing wrong with the ammo.
coupons re great but only if it's in stock...

that is a link to my comparison between winchester and hornady bullets for .223 ammo.
I have found Winchester, unless high price ammo is actually of pretty poor quality.
they will probably tell you the rounds you received are within limits.
biggest cause at this point is the machines are running 24/7 pumping out ammo and they are spending less time and money keeping them clean and taking care to produce not only a quality ammo product but a clean and visually appealing ammo product as well.
