I have the chance to go on a coyote hunt. I do not have the cash to buy any specialty rounds for my AR. I have VMAX 110gr in 6.8mm that I will be using. My son will have my standard AR and I was gonn aload him with either xm193 or M855. That is all I have in that round. I have soft points in .303 for my enfield, but figured I would leave that for elk or deer.

Im leaning towards the xm193, but gonna let him know a follow up shot may be required.

Any logical advice is appreciated. [Beer]

For me I would say XM193. A steel core bullet seems way overkill for a coyote. Either way a second shot will most likely be required.

Just my .02 worth but have fun popping the coyotes[Sniper]

I wouldn't waste my good M855 ammo. the 55 M193 FMJ will go through the yote as it is. really you want a good hollow point, or even a V max round. depends on if you want the pelts or not. a soft point would also do a very good job, without damaging the pelt too bad.

since I have to pick between the two, go with the M193. hands down.

you would be wasting really good ammo using M855.

.223 Winchester supremes with 50gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. Had good luck with the 52gr Seirra Match HP's too, but not like the Noslers. Hornady makes some pretty explosive HP's and ballistic tips too. FMJ's have a tendency to zip right through and sometimes can cause miles of tracking before they bleed out.

6.8 will work, but pretty heavy for shooting a dog. The 303 is way overkill.

Ummm.. for the guys recommending FMJ type ammo:

It is illegal to hunt any game in Colorado with FMJ. Per regs you must use an expanding type of ammunition like a soft tip or hollow point.

So don't recommend to anyone that they hunt with it please.

Isn't it just illegal for big game? I searched on CDOW site and couldn't find anything for small game. You have a link Osprey?

For the 6.8, just about any round would work, but the 110gr Sierra ProHunters seem to work really well for just about everything. 85gr Barnes TSX or TTSX would probably have way too much penetration. Have you ever shot a yote with a 110gr VMAX? I'd be interested in a BDA if you can.

For .223, i'd have to agree with Sniper7 and go with the 55gr FMJ. Good luck! Be sure to tell us how it goes!

BDA????

Ballistics data? If that is what you are wanting it is on Hornady's website for the 110gr 6.8mm.

BDA????

Battle Damage Assessment.

Dont use FMJs. After exiting, who knows where that bullet is going to go.

If you use basic gun safety rules to be sure of your target and backstop, this should not be a problem. Obviously nobody should be shooting coyotes with a neighborhood or school in the background.

Michigan, I will make sure I take pics if I get some with the 6.8mm VMAX 110gr.

I contacted the DOW and it is legal to use FMJ's for small game.

Thanks! I've never used VMAXs before, but i've heard pretty good stuff about them. Are they your dedicated hunting round?

better check your source and go read cdow regs. you CAN use fmj for yotes. they are small game. no fmj for big game. i still say use the fmj unless you go buy a box of ammo. then get v max or hp ammo. i highly doubt you will need more than 20 unless you run into a enormous pack of yotes or you are a horrible shot.

I clicked the wrong box and ordered a 100 rounds of the VMAX. My intention was for the reg BTHP(same price where i get them). I have never hunted varmints before so they maybe my dedicated round in 6.8, time will tell.

What he is saying DD is load all of your mags to the max and bring extra rounds for the few yotes you will see, at least H is backing you up :)

I have been told there is a shit pile of yotes where Im going and has not been hunted for a long time. H is going with his grandfather to go flat track racing. W may go, Im not sure....she is nervous about shooting an animal. Gotta take the thinking out of her head her mom has been telling her.
