View Full Version : Ddr3 ram recommendations please
Have a dell m4700 running windows 10 pro at 32 bit in process of upping to 64bit as we speak I am going to be upgrading the ram from 4gb to 32gb and installing a ssd or the fire cuda from seagate as well. Is the simplest route to just grab the crucial and move on? Or any other brands that have a good reputation? Thanks in advance

I have the quad chip already checked that. My concerns are space seeing as it is a laptop a monster in form factor but still a laptop
with some of the fancy heat sink Ram pucks I don't know if they will fit or not. I am reading as much as I can find but know there are is a lot of knowledge on the forum

Samsung, Kingston, Crucial are all good. I would put 32gb in, it is a waste (unless you are running Hyper-V, VMware, 3DX rendering). 16gb will do everything you need. Match pairs are always best.
Performance on SSD is really just splitting hairs. A Samsung EVO will be plenty fast. >$200
Remember, computers are not guns, you will never get any of your money out of it. Whether a $4000 or $400 computer, they will all be worth $10 in a few years. I advise people to save upgrade money for the next machine and replace them every 3-5 years or so.
This was my penny saving upgrade haha my last one was made in 07.
I can definitely get into 16 gb much cheaper than 32
What about the firecuda? 2 tb for what I can get into a 500gb Samsung
2TB of SSD is great, but when it goes, it's gone. I'd suggest looking into not storing everything on the SSD and having a few backup external HDDs for "can't lose" items, along with cloud storage of "definitely cannot lose" items.

8gb is SSD the rest is a spinner...its one of those hybrid drives.
I have used Crucial in my last 4 or 5 builds and have had no issues. My windows 10 machine boots up super fast with 8gb ram and an I3. I am actually quite impressed and I hate windows.

Oh, interesting. How does it partition everything then, as far as OS needs?

I run straight SSD. I dont think the hybrid with be much faster than a normal SATA 7200, plus they will require more battery power. I upgrade a laptop my SSD, then put the old disk in a external case, now I have a 1tb USB 3.0 disk for storage or backup. Case cost +/-$30.
The hybrid drive is usually a single partition. An algorithm in the drive migrates the data that's used most frequently to the flash portion of the drive. It allows a little more responsive system, with the advantage of high capacity.
Personally, I don't need that much data on a portable system. I have a NAS for backups and storing the important stuff. The 1TB SSD in the MacBook Pro that I'm on right now is about 4 times larger than most of my systems. I also run VMs on the machine and trying to upgrade a Mac after the fact isn't much of a reality these days.
I'm moving our standard systems at work almost entirely to NVMe SSD storage. Faster than going through a disk controller.

I got the ram installed tonight and first 3 boot attempts didn't go well. I Thought I was going to run into the issues that came up in that thread. But all ram related is kosher now. Balmy 16 gb
I picked up the firecuda and when I tried to do the first install my boot media and or /dell doesn't find the hdd working on that right now

I don't have a Dell M4700. I have a M4500 & M4600. Glad it seems to be working for you.

I'm finding the last sentence confusing... are you saying that it is good to go or it doesn't see the hdd?
If that latter, what error(s) do you get? Have you checked BIOS settings?
I Had a couple beers at that point.
I was able to get all the ram recognized finally using my old hard drive.
When I run the boost disc it does not show any available drives. Sea gate doesn't have a driver online I can find for it.
I am going to see if the bios is detecting it or not this morning after coffee.
She is finally up and running. 16 gb of ram 1TB of hdd.
I had to use a sata to USB cable and do a quick format to get the drive visible to the win 10 boot disc.
My first boot disc was corrupted somehow after I did the initial move from 7 to 10.
The amusing part was redoing the boot disc and formatting the hard drive with a raspberry pi, it was the only other working computer I had in the house.
