Got word a little while ago that my father was diagnosed with TIA (mini/transient stroke) this morning at his local hospital... he recovered, and asked for tests to be run that required him to be transferred to St. Vincent hospital in Portland, OR. (he lives in Oysterville, WA near the OR border)

right now I'm being kept in the loop by my stepmother who is following the ambulance during the Xfer- he is stable and coherent. If the situation worsens, I'll fly to Portland...

I hope everything works out for the best. I would agree if you think you should go you need to go. I just lost my grandfather 2 weeks ago, had to almost force my sister to fly here to see him and she was barely in time to see him. ( Not to try to worry you more). Everything can be replaced except for family

Sending good thoughts. Time is so important when reacting to strokes, hopefully there'll be a speedy and complete recovery. Stay hopeful.

Latest update I have is that they did an MRI on his brain looking for infection, or stroke damage... he has a kidney infection that is obviously not their first concern, but investgating if it's a symptom of something larger.

Of concern is when asked what his address is, he gives his Alaska address from 16 years ago - also from before my mother died.

I've been looking into flights, I may be headed there in the morning... want to hear results of MRI

Thanks for all the prayers, someone once told me it's both the least AND the most we can do, at the same time.

MRI was negative, no evidence of stroke or TIA... they did a spinal tap, waiting for those results now.

My sister is a nurse, sees a lot of elderly patients.... she thinks it's all centered on his kidney infection.
He's diabetic, and if infection is bad enough for renal failure, it can affect brain function.

Spoke with him today and he could put together complete sentences, which is improved from last night.

When my sister spoke with him later today, he couldn't remember how he wound up in the hospital...
But my stepmother says his condition continues to improve as time goes on (hopefully because antibiotics are clearing the infection).

When I spoke to him, he said he didn't want me to fly out there... he's stubborn that way.... so at least he's acting like himself.

I bet your sister is right. It's not uncommon for a urinary tract infection to cause some pretty impressive confusion / mental changes in the elderly - I see it every day in the ER. Best wishes for your pop.
