I would think by now the ATF would have a list of serial numbers for stolen weapons. How hard would it be to have a web site we could all check?

I read a piece awhile ago that said thefts from LE has also increased but I didn't have the link handy. So I tried to Google and got back pages of articles saying thefts have increased all over the country.

If the ATF requires the FFL to provide a list of stolen guns and if that list includes serial numbers, listing them by manufacture and providing a link to the list on their web site should be simple data entry. Somebody already has a list otherwise how does law enforcement know when they have recovered stolen guns?

If FFL’s don’t voluntarily do something to secure their weapons after business hours, the ATF is going to end up telling FFL’s how they must store them as a condition of getting their license.

Your idea just jogged my memory on a very negative experience I had with a local kitchen table FFL.

I had purchased a P22 via GB to practice stoppage drills ;) . It was mailed directly to FFL. Did the BGC, paid the fees. FFL either lost his book and wasn't logging correctly (I don't think this guy every told me the truth) and got audited.

He had contacted me to see if I would be willing to come back and re-do the check which I was (no fee). He called later and said the ATF wouldn't allow that and he would have to report every gun as stolen to the Douglas County Sheriff. I wasn't happy. He called a few days later and said he found the book and the ATF was satisfied.

Never went back. Never heard anything more of it. Wonder if this is inflating the number of "stolen" guns?

I have a friend with a gun shop as a part-time business (real physical location, just limited hours). All firearms go in the safe at the end of the day. I don't understand any business that would leave $10Ks of merchandise a broken window away.
