Last night watched "Top Gun" on Blu-ray (still the best aerial footage ever and so much more spectacular in HD!) then a commercial today playing "Don't You Forget About Me" got me to load "The Breakfast Club" ...
Damn, they just don't make movies like this anymore ... and I'd hate to think how it would be written if done today ...
Three words.
Long duck dong.
The 80's were definitely a high point for quality storylines. But the special effects in today's movies are pretty spectacular.

There were some great movies from the 80s...
Die Hard
Full Metal Jacket (I think that was 80s)
Aliens
The original "Gone In 60 Seconds" would've made the list...it was 70s movies.

Oh, hell....
The Blues Brothers. Maybe that was 70s, too.
And I still love "Top Gun".

I gotta say, "The Final Countdown" had some great aerial footage, too. The scene where the Tomcats are dogfighting with the Zeros was fantastic. Except for the explosions...you could easily see the little wing tabs that fit into the fuselage of the models they used.
I especially like the shot of the F-14 coming out of the clouds behind the Zero.

It is all Shakespeare, they just rearrange the order of events in the story. I think think he got the idea from somebody else.
However, I saw every one of these in an actual movie theatre. Star Wars was from 1977.
The following are the 10 top-grossing films of the decade:
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), $435 million
Return of the Jedi (1983), $309 million
The Empire Strikes Back (1980), $290 million
Batman (1989), $251 million
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), $245 million
Ghostbusters (1984), $238 million
Beverly Hills Cop (1984), $234 million
Back to the Future (1985), $210 million
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), $197 million
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), $179 million

I loved the 80s, women in really brightly colored spandex, big hair, loud motorcycles, cops sold the best drugs, the desert was still open to ride dirt bikes, you could buy a great truck for $500, great movies and music, didn't need health insurance to see a doctor or dentist, motocross was really taking off and I lived at Ascot Park during the summer.
Escape from New York
Farewell to the King
Red Dawn
Missing in Action
Then Big Red One

I was thinking of a lot of those too. Many of them are in my Blu-ray/DVD collection because I enjoy watching them over and over on demand.

CGI is amazing but I'll take good solid writing and non-CGI SFX over the pap being served today.

I do hate when they serve me pap.
But I do like the CGI/animation stuff. Makes the sci-fi and superhero movies way more awesome than they were back in the day.

Die Hard, Rocky IV, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Princess Bride..... They just don't make them like they used to.

Big time!
Special effects cannot overcome a poor script, weak acting, and poor editing.

Sure it can. I'm pretty sure all of those Twilight movies made big money at the box office.

I like (or tolerate) most any Golan-Globus movie.
Sure, the plot can be kind of thin, but the action makes up for it.
I remember watching these movies at the theater for $1 a head on both Fiday midnight and Saturday midnight.
I think like every decade ever, the 80's probably turned out far more garbage movies than it did great movies.

Yeah, probably. But some of those terrible movies are great fun to watch as well. But, what other decade spat out lines like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhGY4ZQYt58

Nudity and onscreen sex can. Some really poor movies made money because of it.
But some of those terrible movies are great fun to watch as well.
Like the Toxic Avenger.
The Hidden.
Guns, fast cars, murder and mayhem, a hot chick...
Top Gun...the photography was pretty amazing for the time.
Here are my most memorable:
Pale Rider
Unforgiven
Sudden Impact
Dead Pool
Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
All three Indiana Jones movies but mostly Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Star Trek 2-4 story arc starting with the Wrath of Kahn
Lethal Weapon (I liked the second one too) I especially like the director's cut of the first one with the deleted opening sequence.
Rocky 3&4
Beverly Hills Cop
Conan the Barbarian
2010
Aliens
Red Dawn
Dirty Dancing
Glory
Dances with Wolves
Das Boot
Vision Quest
Victory
Vacation
Caddyshack
Big Trouble in Little China
Stripes
1941
Edit: I almost forgot the The Right Stuff (Chariots of Fire should be on here too) (as well as Batman)
Edit2: I walked past my DVDs I can't believe I forgot An Officer and a Gentleman
Most of these I saw in the theater when they came out...LOL I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.
Unforgiven isn't from the 80's.
Still a darn good show though.
Neither is Dances with Wolves (1990)
Best worst 80s movies:

Eric the Viking (Oops that is a fav)
Iron Eagle
Slumber Party Massacre
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (A personal fav)

Tarantino paid a bit of homage to him in Death proof, IMHO. Just turned him into Stunt Man Mike.

I always liked The Burbs.
Red Dawn
This was post #17... slacking here, should have been mentioned in at least the first 5. But Bailey pointed this out first...
Damn...good call. Shoulda been one of the first ones mentioned.
Where The Buffalo Roam (It's got Bill fawkin' Murray!!)
One of my favorite Bill Murray movies! People bring up Fear and Loathing (which is actually a prequel to Buffalo), and I always mention how this one was better. "F*** the Doomed"- Richard Nixon
I always liked The Burbs.
Great movie.
The 80's sure were a good time for movies... Corny, over the top, amazing!
Not sure if this totally applies but it is movie related and specifically to the 80's.
Anyone remember Joe Bob Briggs? He had a deal on the Movie Channel (I think) on late Friday or Saturday night where they would play horror movies (mostly B movies) and would always do a little introduction before the movie with a synapses of the plot including things like the breast count.
It was pretty funny stuff. I don't remember which movie he was introducing but part of the plot included "a gay, paraplegic nazi and his black amazon assistant". Sure enough, when the show started the main villain was a fruity little German guy in a wheelchair who was being pushed around by a black woman that looked to be about six and a half feet tall.
Good times.
