View Full Version : Scar 16, What Would You Do.

So my Scar light currently has a 14" factory barrel pinned to 16.1 with a suppressor attachment (Griffin Arms flash comp). I shoot it mainly suppressed. I have an opportunity to get a 10" barrel for it for dirt cheap. I mean really cheap. Nothing nefarious, just know the guy well and why he's offering to sell to me at a rediculously low price. Barrel shoots well on his sbr.

So here's my dilemma and options.

1. Keep my current barrel, that I have no major complaints about, and tell my buddy to sell his barrel for a higher price elsewhere.

2. Keep my current setup, buy the barrel and flip it for some cash. (Told my friend and he's fine with me doing this)

3. Buy the barrel and permanently attach one of my home rolled form 1s to make a single stamp gun.

There are a few thoughts about this scenario. I have no desire to sbr my SCAR right now. I've got a 6.5" FORM 1 titanium suppressor that would direct thread and could be pinned pretty easy. A 16.5" suppressed SCAR handles pretty nicely. Also I doubt I would really care for switching barrels back and forth so i'd be tempted to sell the 14 off if I did this. I guess I could keep the 14 on a shelf for whatever reason. But the extra cash it would generate would be alright. I guess my main problem is my indecisiveness. So I thought I'd just throw it out there. What would you do?

I've got no input other than #2, I've always thought it to be a d#ck move to get something for cheap or free, from friends or family, and then turn it for money, especially since option #1 clearly mentions him selling it for a higher price elsewhere. Just one man's opinion, since you asked.

While I don't like option #2 either, I suppose if you already told your buddy what you were going to do and he doesn't seem to care then I guess it's Ok.

Likely what I would do is keep your setup the way it is and offer to sell your buddy's barrel for him and give him the cash after you sell it.

Since SBR is out of the question, I'll choose that route. :P

Go #3 and run it fully suppressed. I love my 10.5" Scar, if a pic will help you with your decision here's mine.

I'm with kwando.

#1...if leaving well enough alone is your thing, then why even own a scar? lol

Valid points so far. The whole selling issue isn't really my struggle, I just threw it in there. Most likely if I sold it, I'd give him some cash. Part of the offer on his part is he owes me for some other stuff. A debt I'd just as well forget, but you know how it goes between stubborn friends. ☺

Really I guess my real dilemma is pinned 16 with an extra 6 inches when suppressed and the ability to shoot unsuppressed, or 16.5" always suppressed.

By the way, the barrels pretty fascinating. Aftermarket, non FN. The extension and small parts are FN, but the barrel and gas block are not. Hes the second owner and doesn't remember who made it. I'll have to post up some pics.

There is (or was) a Spic n Span out here. I used to see it on the map when I was working Roadside Assistance for AAA.

Not the same thing. Their dessert selection is amazing. Those eclairs look small, but they'll make 2 people happy.

Typing on a phone tonight. Fluping auto spaghetti.

If we are talking Charlie's Spic n Span... Only everytime me and the wife can find an excuse to go to Vegas. From my house, it's the same Walmart distance to Vegas or Trinidad, so lunch at Charlie's is usually the determining factor. Lived down there for a year many moons ago and it was a regular breakfast hangout for me. They must put crack in their tortillas. Best in the world. Any of ya'll ever passing through Vegas, NM, it's worth the stop.

Dammit, now I'm hungry.

Here's the barrel. The gas block is very well made, but definitely not FN. Right now I'm leaning perm attaching a suppressor. I could pin through the suppressor, but the outer skin is Titanium and I don't have a tig with a chamber to weld over the pin. Any metal experts think I could weld over a steel pin on the Ti with mig? I know it wouldn't really weld but braze the dissimilar metals, and I know about embrittlement with welding Ti, just wondering if a simple plug weld would hold. I might have to experiment with some scrap. Either that or take a trip to my buddy down in Las Cruces, he has a good setup for Ti.

I don't know what price you're paying but a non FN barrel won't pull the same premium on the used market. A lot of the FN guys are picky about that. I honestly don't know a price on a non FN barrel because there aren't many out there for SCARs. Id probably just buy it, pin it and then keep the 14" in case you ever want to go back. With how simple barrel swaps are on SCARs, that's what Id do.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback. After some consulting with many people, I decided that:

A- I do really like my SCAR carbine the way it is. Got plenty of other SBR's already.
B- I talked it over with the owner and he asked if I would sell it on his behalf. He wants to split the profit with me.

I agree with Dave_L in that I've never seen one of these and have no clue what it would sell for, so I've thrown it up on gunbroker to see what will happen. If anyone is interested, that's where I hope to sell it off. Thanks again all, You all made some good points.

Also for Kazoo and anyone else interested. Me and the wife had a lovely lunch at Charlies Spic n Span on Saturday. The carnitas with a side of posole was awesome. Even managed to pack away sopapillas and a creampuff.

On a related note a member of our prayer group is headed to SF tomorrow morning. I suggested he do lunch at Charlies.

Did you grab a whipped cream filled eclair for the trip home?
