Maybe that will burn up some of the trash too. It was getting ridiculous out there. I can only fit so much in a trash bag... Hope no one was hurt. Is it still going on? I don't see anything on the news about it.

Last I heard was 40 acres or so. Lots of calls to shut it down from those who live in the area as this is the 4th fire there this year.

Yes shut it down. It is no longer a safe place to shoot. It is beyond ridiculous what I've seen out there

I've never been there. WTF with all the fires?

I last was there maybe 3-4 years ago with my kids and it was out of control. We had rounds impacting in our firing line area. Never went back. I would not want to live in the area and would not blame anyone for wanting it shut down.

I took a girlfriend and her family out there in 2013. We went out on a weekday thinking it would be quiet, only 5 or 6 other vehicles out there at that time. Driving to where we could shoot was probably the worst as people were shooting everywhere, trash all over, never went back. Shocked the place is still open and the Forest Service hasn't closed it.

My last trip out there is what made me join a private range. Well worth it.

I grew up shooting out there and still frequent it. My in-laws live downrange from the main "berm". It's hard for me to say this, because I think we are losing too much public shooting land, but the place is out of control. Perhaps it should be closed to shooting during high fire danger times.

Last time I was there we were getting ready to shoot when a truck backed half way up the side of the mountain and set up steel. He was directly behind my target so we held fire. The people to our right weren't so kind. I know they could see the poor dumb sob that high up. I need to join CRC soon!

No wonder it's a fire danger: all the water falls up, away from the fire.

My last trip out there a few years ago is what finally convinced me to join BLGC. I still don't like to see this as it reflects poorly on shooting.

News says the fire is 9 miles north of Woodland Park ... yet the range is 11 miles north of Woodland Park, so I don't think the range is involved.

I still enjoy going there so disappointing to see this happen again. With that said I only go during the week day and usually the place is empty and many times pretty much have it to myself for a hour or 2. While I am a member at a range it is still nice to be able to go pop some milk jugs once in a while, shooting a paper target and a tightly controlled range does get boring after a while.

The trash does disgust me and I always take out more then I bring. Don't understand why people can't pick up after themselves?

Don't understand why people can't pick up after themselves?

After hauling out cases of empty beer cans, and shot out big screen tv's, I've resolved to the fact that the gun community isn't full of upstanding citizens any longer.

News pulled their info from the fire information page. The 9 mile figure is based on WP city limits. Range is involved. It's shown on the map on the fire info page and I'm getting updates from folks who live 1.5 miles away. Plus, it's recognizable in the OP picture.

Offical updates here.

It doesn't really matter where they came from, if they are out shooting, they are part of the gun community in the court of public opinion, rather we want them to be or not.

Very valid point. We're all lumped in together. Ive just seen posts about camping areas being trashed more lately too. Its not just shooters, its people. They don't care about anything other than themselves now. But its all moot when this stuff happens. That range wont be around for much longer, I think.

***Information provided by the USDA Forest Service. Any questions about this fire will be directed to USDA Forest Service Fire Information Officer Dawn Sanchez 719-338-4995 ***

The Turkey Track 7 Fire in southern Douglas County is estimated to be about 40 acres in size as of Wednesday afternoon. Fire crews are currently working to build and secure a control line around the fire. There is no estimate of the percentage of the fire contained at this time. If weather conditions are favorable the Incident Commander plans to have fire control lines secured around the fire by nightfall.

The Turkey Track 7 Fire is burning on the perimeter of the 2002 Hayman Fire. Numerous trees killed by the Hayman Fire present a significant hazard to firefighters as this current fire burns around the roots and bases of these dead trees. The hazard from toppling dead trees is slowing efforts to completely extinguish this burn. Smoke from the interior of the burned area may be visible for multiple days.

The target shooting area along Forest Road #343 is currently closed for the safety of the public and firefighters. This public closure may extend through the weekend, depending on when firefighters are able to secure the fire area and reduce the public hazard from fire-damaged trees. Firefighters are asking the public to stay clear of the area for everyone’s safety.

It has been determined that the Turkey Track 7 Fire was ignited by human activities, the specific cause and circumstances are under investigation. This is the seventh fire ignited in the target shooting area along Forest Road #343 during the past two months.

Fire updates will be available periodically on the Forest’s Fire Information Blog at: http://www.psiccfireinfo.blogspot.com

I hate to see reductions in public shooting land too, primarily because I hate to give anything to the leftist anti-gunners, but if irresponsible people are endangering responsible people ...

To be honest, the gun community like any other community (except maybe the Occupy Movement) is diverse and has a wide variety of people so it has never been FULL of upstanding citizens. I've seen plenty of irresponsible shooters (or at least the by-products of their actions like shot-up road signs) over the years. Most gun owners are responsible but there have always been a number of irresponsible Joe Six-Packs (literally ... I didn't know many guys who went pig hunting when I was growing up in Hawaii but those that I did know would be sure to take along plenty of beer and I'm reasonably certain they mixed their drinking and shooting).

The trash does disgust me and I always take out more then I bring. Don't understand why people can't pick up after themselves?

This. Modern society has encouraged tons of people to think only of themselves (which is rather ironic given the collectivist bent of so much modern politics).

The other bad part of shutting down public shooting areas is that it just moves people to a new area to trash.

And we know for 100% certain that it was target shooters that caused the fires? And not antis or treehuggers trying to get the range shut down? I have a friend with a cabin about half way between Woodland Park and the range and I wouldn't put it past his commie fiance to go up there and set fires herself because she bitches about the shooters ruining "her" peace and quiet up there (because like most libtards, the world exists only for HER pleasure).

I was shooting at Lead Valley a couple of months ago and a fire started on the back side of the berm next to me. Luckily the guys that run the range got a handle on it before it got out of hand. Not sure how it started. Especially on the back of the berm. Nobody was shooting any tracer or dragon's breath. Couple of people were shooting steel. Bullets do weird stuff. Of course sometimes people do weird stuff as well.

Last time I was at an unmonitored range a kid put a little bottle of tanerite in a pumpkin and bounced pumpkin shrapnel off everyone's cars and trucks. Dented a couple.

People talk about this on here every now and then, but has this ever been the case?
