Admittedly I did the same thing recently with a 44 special, and it didn't feel real good. I was transitioning from my G27 to my dad's 44, and made the mistake.

Maybe the cylinder to barrel gap is so tight that there is no gas leak, or the guys thumb is tougher than steel and can withstand flame cutting.
