Not that I follow such matters closely, but I wasn't aware that we haven't actively used one until now.

Same here, there was some huge bomb used in Afghanistan around December 2001, I was under the impression it was the largest bomb at the time that was non-nuclear. Dalton Fury talks about it in his book.

MOAB wasn't in service until 2003, whereas Tora Bora took place in 2001.

BLU-82 was probably the one mentioned by Maj. Greer in his book.

Didn't they actually test MOAB in Afghanistan? I thought I read something years ago about 'testing' it there.. or maybe I'm thinking about the big bunker busters that were still warm when they loaded them on the plane..

Pretty sure that the weapon used early in Afghanistan was a thermobaric bomb, BLU-118B.

I was wondering how effective it would be if you were in a cave.

Meh. We dropped a big ass bomb in the desert. Big deal.

Wake me up when we start using fuel-air bombs again.

They updated the article and took out my favorite part since I read it earlier today. It was the part where they said that the bomb was moved specifically to Afghanistan in order to be used there.

Wait.. we moved ordnance to a war zone so that it could be used in a war zone?

Let me know when we get to re-fire up the Enola Gay.

Wouldn't 10 well placed/timed 5,000 pounders deliver more effect?

Or is it a case of, it's only 9mm?

A little historical perspective: "The bomb is officially called a GBU-43 or Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB)... Weighing more than 21,000 lbs., the weapon is the largest non-nuclear bomb ever used in combat."
But, we're not the first: "The Grand Slam was a 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) earthquake bomb used by RAF Bomber Command against strategic targets during the Second World War. It was the most powerful non-atomic bomb used in the war." (WWII)

The MOAB's overall explosive yield is larger (GBU-43 at equal to 11 tons of TNT vs Grand Slam at 6.5 tons TNT equivalent).

The Grand Slam was way friggin cool. I have always thought the Lancaster was the most beautiful bomber of all time.

The Daisy Cutter and MOAB are cool, but....

Depends on the effect you're looking for. If you want to blanket a surface area for destruction, yes, they would. If you want to destroy a deeply placed fortified bunker, no. they wouldn't. This puppy was developed specifically because of the proliferation of deep fortified bunkers -- possibly including a certain chubby a-hole in eastern Asia who likes to play with missiles and nukes and nerve agents.

The test of the MOAB was done in N. FL many years back... It was conducted on a military test range.
