Family will be in Montrose soon for a conference. Any good places to eat? Any places we shouldn't miss while there?

I haven't been too adventurous while traveling through, but Colorado Boy pizzeria was pretty good. Two Rascals Brewery serves good beer but the food selection was very limited. It does seem to be preferred to Horsefly though by everybody I know (haven't been to Horsefly).
I'll second Colorado boy pizza

If you have the time, go see the Black Canyon.
If you like Mexican food there's a cool little place called Amelia's Hacienda Restaurante. 44 S Grand Ave
+1 for Colorado Boy
Pastrami Salami with sauerkraut sandwich at Subwiches 1222 E Main St
Starvin Arvins was good. Try some of the local Colorado hot sauce, I ended up buying a bottle. Dad's Red Jalapeno Sauce made in Palisade at Pear Blossom Farms. Pretty tasty stuff.
The Stone House is a nice place.
Definitely take some time to drive up to Black Canyon.
If you shoot lead bullets, swing by the San Juan range and pick some up from Paul...

We liked this place.
There is also a Thai place there was very good. I don't recall the name but there can't be many in Montrose.
Thai place is called Chang, on south townsend. Another good local restaurant is called the Camp Robber, further south on Townsend ave.
As others have said, Colorado Boy pizza and Stone House are pretty good.

If you have the time to drive down to Ouray (about a 45min drive) you can visit one of my favorite little breweries; The Ourayle House Brewery (home of Mr Grumpy Pants Brewing Co).

I'll join in on saying that you definitely want to drive through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. My wife and I visited there for the first time last fall and it was spectacular. We were only there for a couple of hours as we were somewhat rushed. You can easily spend the entire day checking it out. WORD OF CAUTION: If you drive to the bottom, use low gear and you'll want to ensure your brakes are in good shape - but use them as little as possible as they will overheat easily. I smelled hot brakes from several other cars going down as we were heading back up.
The Western Slope has a lot to offer and I encourage everyone to take a weekend trip to visit. I know little of Grand Junction and think Montrose is a typical medium sized farming town, but there is still much to see. I particularly enjoy staying in Ouray at a hot springs hotel. If you care to make the drive down to Silverton, it's gorgeous (the drive, not so much the town). If you do get to Silverton, it's easy to miss the mining museum (I did), but I'm told they have an underground mine you get to walk through that's pretty cool.
I am partial to above ground mines, but I guess underground mines are okay too.

Sarcasm; I get it.
As O2HeN2 alluded to, strip mines are above ground mines. The "mine" under Silverton is not one of those.
Since I didn't find this museum while in Silverton and was only told about it after my trip, I don't know if the museum mine was a real working mine originally, or if they just tunnelled under Silverton to create a faux mine for the museum.

Another one my mom just reminded me of: The Camp Robber.
Good vittles and yes, go check out the Black Canyon.
