I thought this was a cool story. Guy buys tank on ebay to restore. Inside the fuel tank are bars of gold. Million dollars worth. Video made by the guys that found it.

No doubt this guy should have kept his mouth shut. [facepalm] The feds will surely find a way to tax the ever loving shit out of it.

If the government comes looking he can always say it was a hoax just for dramatic TV purposes.

Problem is it'd be hard to move that much gold in bars that large without drawing notice.

They'll seize it, not even tax it. They'll claim its stolen and belongs to the Iraqi people.

True. Would be worth investing in some minting equipment and dole out the gold over time.

Find 10 million, turn-in 1 million.
Retire to Belize.

Not clear on when they found the gold, but...

Based off of what the video and the weight they got for it on the bathroom scale (not the most accurate of scales), and todays gold price of 1,290.6/ounce, I estimate the 5 bars of gold are worth more than $1.4M.

I wonder if they got to keep it.

If you watch the video, they had 5 bars out of the tank and said "I reckon there's at least two more. And regardless of what anyone says, we only found 5." The cameraman then says "No, no; we'll be straight about it." Yet, they officially only found 5 bars. Interesting.

If there were 2 more gold bars found, each weighing 12.25 lbs, at todays gold price that would be about 1/4 million $ that wasn't disclosed.

I get the feeling that this is an older video and gold prices were likely much lower when this was filmed. Plus, I'm estimating the value in dollars when they're likely using British pounds.

I'da looked in the fuel tank with a flashlight and said "ah jeeze, it's fulla mud and rocks. I'll clean this out later. Y'all can go home now, we'll work on it more tomorrow."

Finding gold should be like Fight Club.

The first rule when finding gold is STFU about finding gold. ;)

I remember a story in recent years about somebody that found some kind of container full of gold coins buried under a tree. They blabbed and lost most, if not all, of it. Can't remember the details - either taxed insanely or confiscated, but bottom line.....they should have STFU about it.

Yeah, Google "Saddle Ridge Hoard".

I think you're thinking about the folks in CA that found a box of gold coins in their back yard. They were in near mint condition and worth millions. If I remember right the government fucked them, of course.

The tank graveyards may be hiding more like this over there. Acres of vehicles in Kuwait.......

Pretty cool story. I would have STFU and been happy.

Someone I know has a similar story. They were working a laborer job and his boss sent him over to clean up his bosses yard from a house he had just purchased. He was not happy about it, but his boss did say he could keep anything out of the yard and scrap everything else.

In the process of cleaning up the yard and all the accumulated "stuff" he came across a few rather large bags of old coins and silver (gallon sized). He definitely "recycled" those coins and received a rather large payday. The yard is in the Broadmoor area in Colorado Springs. I laugh whenever I'm in the area. Makes me wonder if Mr. Penrose misplaced the silver.

Right because gold coins are currency and if the government removes them from circulation - no one should have them in their opinion
