I've got a junk car (1999 Suburban with blown head gasket and no wheels) that I'm trying to get rid of...

couldn't find title- fine, go apply for duplicate...
DMV: "it's not in your name, it appears to be in your wife's name... she has to be here"
Me: "She's in Texas, and doesn't want to come back here"
DMV: "you could get her to fill out this power of attorney form, then you get apply in person for duplicate"

have her overnight (which isn't overnight from Canton to Canon City, it's 2 day) the form after she's filled it out and notarized
Then go to the DMV and get a duplicate printed right there... bring it to her in Texas on my last run bringing stuff there and have her sign it... great, right?
oh fuck no... that would be too easy... because it's a duplicate, it's still in my wife's name...

And apparently junk yards are "not allowed" (their words) to buy vehicles unless the person WHOSE NAME IS ON THE TITLE is present.
This is a marital property state- if we were getting divorced, she could likely wind up with a vehicle that's only in my name (or vice-versa)... so WTF is this a problem?

I wanted to try telling one "well, she's dead"... when in reality Colorado is just dead to her.

ME: "can I just transfer the title into my name"
DMV: "sure, but we can only print titles for the same VIN once every 30 days here... since you had that duplicate printed, it has to go to the state and they mail you one"
ME: "why didn't you say that in the first place, could I have transferred the vehicle to me with the power of attorney"
DMV: "not without a title"
ME: "I need a drink"

now it looks like there are places that will take it just for recycle value (maybe $200)... and they haven't mentioned that same title issue (but maybe it will come up when I'm there)
There is also plenty of good parts on it, but I guess they're all getting crushed because of dumbass state policies/laws

I'm thinking it would be more satisfying to drop it off in front of the capital building and set it on fire...
These rules are all made by this shitty demonrat legislature, with the collective thought that everybody has to be punished for the actions of a few

why not just throw the book at someone who sells a family member's car to a salvage yard? No, much better to throw a bunch of bullshit bureaucratic red tape at everyone else...
probably because the majority of the legislature feels like it's something they might do, so we need to protect people from it...

need to sit down and write a nasty letter to all the CO legislature about how they are driving good people out with their bullshit...

This is a community property state, right?

Its surprising how many people think so. But no. Colorado is not a community property state.

I stand corrected... but my other statement about half of your shit being taken in a divorce still stands...
From Legalzoom:

Colorado is not a “community property” state, but it does have a category called “marital property.” In Colorado, most assets acquired during a marriage are considered marital property, which is subject to division by the courts in a divorce.

Couldn't your wife have just signed the title over to you, then you sign it to the junk yard?

My wife has a horrible signature sometimes. Almost like she has a man's handwriting [facepalm]. Thankfully, my handwriting sucks as well, so we have that in common... at times.

Junkyards are explicitly saying NO... they will ONLY buy cars if the person ON THE FRONT of the title is present. They say this is Colorado law now.

I could go transfer it into my name, but would have to wait 2+ weeks for the title with my name to be mailed to me (since satellite office is only allowed to print one every 30 days per VIN)..

I'm closing on the house next week (look for my location to change shortly)

I sure as hell don't want to make a special trip back here to deal with a junk car that I'd have to store at my Mother-in-Law's house (which is going on the market very soon), or haul it down to TX just to dispose of it...

CraigsList.

Parting out car, first $200 takes it.

when I tried that before, I got crickets... (I think because I'm like 30 miles out of Colorado Springs or Pueblo)

I have a good story as well.

Bought a trailer with a clear Colorado title and bill of sale from the original owner who purchased it new in 1993. They even gave me a copy of the current registration, just in case.

You would think that one would be easy to title and register in my name.

Wrong.

Apparently they had switched things up and trailers now had to have a four letter abbreviation for the manufacturer of the trailer. The title I had was old and had a three digit abbreviation and that abbreviation wasn't in the new database so they didn't know who manufactured it to assign it the new title with the four digit abbreviation.

Took two trips and lots of arguing with various managers and a little bit of nastiness on my part before I finally got them to issue me a title. I told them repeatedly that I didn't give a rat's ass who built the trailer back in 93 and that I had a clear title and supporting documentation showing who I had purchased it from and that I didn't care what they had to do to make it happen.

Eventually, I got my title and plates. It is now titled as a "TRLR" which is what they use for a home made trailer.

I also sold a car to a scrap place for my son. I had him sign the title and everything but he wasn't home when the wrecker came to pick it up. The guy started telling me he couldn't take it unless my son was there but he ended up taking it anyways after I explained that it was my son's vehicle and he was at work and had signed everything like he was supposed to.

I have one that will fun to untangle, the purchaser bought the car from dealer fall 2015, shortly thereafter suffered medical issue didn't drive car and died in late 2016 without ever registering it. Now DMV says you have to post a salvage bond, the car and VIN are there, what a pain.

You have to know a girl at the DMV.

Find out the consequences of just abandoning the vehicle somewhere. If you're willing to scrap it for $200 just to get rid of it, just leave it some where. Have you tried calling one of those vehicle donation places (everyone takes donated vehicles now a days) to see if they'd be willing to work with you more than the DMV?

NPR will take vehicle donations, as well as karsforkids.

I say we drag it out somewhere and use it for target practice. [AR15]

What @Irving said. Plenty of places that will come get it and maybe even give you a few bucks. Just google junk cars. I've gotten rid of a few that way. They come and drag it onto a flatbed and go. No title, no problem.

Just did this with my son's vehicle. Got $100 more because we had the title but the junkers will take them without-most seemed to be around $200.

this is easy
haul it out into a field or a corner

walk away

sure, the police might call in a few weeks "hey, is this yours?"

well no officer, according to the state, nobody owns it, therefore, you now are in charge of it, thank the DMV

problem solved.

I actually did this once. I had a POS car I drove my last year in HS (79) that had transmission problems. It wasn't worth fixing and I was due to leave for basic training in a few days. Pulled up to a stop sign on a fairly busy street in Casper, WY one morning. When I pressed the accelerator it wouldn't go...just revved but wouldn't move. I was pissed. I got out, grabbed what little I had in the car and walked away. Left for MEPS a day or so later. Never heard anything about it. I probably have a warrant waiting for me there.
