I've been accepted to the K-State Poly professional pilot program so it looks like I'll be moving this August. Can any members point me to some good info about the area?

There is a reason it is called the flatlands.
The humidity usually equals the temperature in the summer time.
Milford lake is huge, and is a little over an hour east of there, if you are in to fishing & boating. The catfish are giants there.
Ft. Riley is also about the same distance east, the pawn shops in Junction City, adjacent to Ft Riley, are very good for .mil items.
There's braums so that's good.

I'm originally from Wichita.
The area around Salina is not as flat as the western part of the state (not as hilly or as many trees as the flint hills in the SE part of the state, but still nice rolling hills).
Its basically the crossroads of Kansas where I70 and I135 meet. So you can get up to KC pretty easily and down to Wichita. Generally good folks (more conservative than Wichita, which is still more red than blue) plenty of decent gun shops. I'd rather live in Salina than some place like Topeka (Gawd I hate Topeka) or Lawrence (think a poorer, dirtier version of Boulder). Its big enough to have all the amenities you want but small enough that the libs don't really want to live there. People at K-State are much friendlier than KU (KU is a poorer, dirtier version of CU Boulder).
Moving there in August means you'll get to experience the worst of the heat and humidity right off the bat so you'll get that out of the way :p

Ah yes, Braums also Spangles (which I miss more than Braums) ... And QuickTrip (they make 7-11 and Loaf & Jug look pretty ghetto ... they have Loaf & Jug there but call it Kwikshop, and King Soopers is called Dillons).
Another nice thing about KS is no emission testing for your car (the pollution blows away to Oklahoma so they don't care :p )

My mothers side of the family is from Salina.
I visited frequently growing up, and even passed through there a few years ago.
It looked like a town stuck in the 50's until about 10-15 years ago.
Last time I was there about 3 years ago I thought the place looked very different, kinda like a suburb in Detroit.
The best place is, and always been Cozy Inn, they have the best sliders ever. It's a 100 year old burger joint, 4 stools to sit at and a carry out window. You will smell like a hamburger for days if you go inside and sit when they are busy.
The grill is original, and I don't think is ever cleaned. The place has been featured on all sorts of food shows over the years, but even when I was young I remember hearing about how people would order them from all over the world and have them sent on dry ice.
Good possibility I'll be driving through there tomorrow heading to Wichita to see my nieces and sister. I'll have to try spangles

Best of luck in pursuing the Pro Pilot program. Plenty of demand for pilots at the moment. Pretty sure you will get plenty of x-wind training. My wife grew up south of there at McPherson. Went back a couple years ago to look around and finally decided after three days that we had had enough of the wind and came home.
I'll tell you this much about Salina, KS, I stop for gas there a few times a year.

They've got a really long runway. Last time I landed there was probably summer of 2000. The airport seemed pretty desolate. I was flying the mighty Beech 1900 Airliner for Air Midwest, a subsidiary of Mesa Airlines at the time. I think I was making about $28,000/year as captain of that mighty flying machine! Good times.
I was born in Manhattan, KS. My [much] older sister went to Brown Mackey Community College in Salina where she studied to be a court reporter/stenographer. That was in the late 70's.
I've visited the area over the years for one reason or another, but am overall very thankful that my mom loaded the family up and moved to Loveland in the late 70's.

I live just N of SLN and my neighbor is the head of the program @ KSU. There's a few shooting ranges local and a LR precision one as well. PM me with questions and I'll try to help.
There's a great bluegrass festival held once a year two hours to the South: https://wvfest.com/

And what do you think of their gas services?
Well lit, at least 87 octane, clean restrooms, plenty of sunflower seeds.

Brookeville Hotel is about a half hour to the East of Salina. Their fried chicken and biscuits are dangerous...guaranteed to eat your weight at that place!
My wife's side of the family is mostly from Kansas and attended K state. I like it out there. If you go to Manhattan, check out So Long Saloon.

You wont be sad. Try the black bean raspberry dip (I think thats what its called). Weird to look at and say but really tasty.
I'm of no help otherwise. Lol.

Stole a family vehicle and ran away to there when I was 14.
The Salina Police do a good job with Felony stops, and will probably provide good police service for you in todays era as well.
Good luck with your new adventure... :)

**Note to self: If you get stopped in a stolen vehicle, make sure you're in Salina, KS. Very efficient police officers.**
That's pretty funny. I had something similar happen to me when I was 17 but it was in Houston, TX and we weren't even in a stolen car. Let's just say the police weren't much interested in our impressions of the customer service they provided.
