Disabled vet took a part time pizza delivery job and 2 gang members called in an order to a vacant house and tried to rob him at gunpoint- they fired a shot first.

Kudos to Dominos for not firing him for defending his own life, but he is on leave pending the investigation... so someone who cares about him setup a gofundme:

we know of him as one of the admins for a facebook group centered around how to ID snakes in North Texas:

As I never trust gofundme pages due to lots of fraud and crappy people, is there a way to verify that is actually for the person in question?

I hear ya, I haven't met these people in person, either- so I don't blame you...

Just the connections I know on Facebook- Mark Pyle is Admin of the Snake ID group on Facebook... he posted it to that group.

David Gerber connected to the gofundme page using his facebook account, and acknowledged the person (Joyce Daugherty Coologhan) that started the page.

If nothing else, consider this a PSA to stay frosty.... and that if you ever need to take a life (even to save yours or another's), that it will not be a pleasant experience.

There are a ton of bad sides to gofundme.com stuff. If anyone here ever uses one make sure they know all the legit rules through the IRS and what the website actually takes in addition to the fraud and fake accounts that pieces of crap make so they can't bank on people's sympathy without actually giving the money to a person in need.

Complete with setting up a fake shooting, police report, and a Fox 4 Dallas news interview?

I'm not alleging that at all. I'm saying criminals use stories like that to set up fake accounts to feed off the good will of people like you and me. Our money ends up going to a dirt bag rather than those in need.

And I certainly wouldn't limit those kinds of scams to just gofundme... the world is full of evil

I wonder if the VA is going to help Chelsea Manning with her operation? I know the Army was helping with the pre op drugs...

Downside = poor guy has to live with this.
Upside = He's alive and gets to see his family again.
Way upside = One less scumbag in the world to prey on innocents.

And good for Domino's for supporting the guy...for the most part.

Update: I met David personally tonight- we had a rat snake that killed a young chicken (but couldn't swallow it). As part of what he does, he drove from Mesquite to Canton to pick it up and relocate/rehab it (we did injure it)

I can verify that the gofundme page for David is legit... obviously the same person in the news video, and he verified he knows Joyce who set up the page (she didn't want to use gofundme, but didn't know a better way)

Great guy, tragic that this happened to him- he did say that the detectives knew very well of the kid that was killed (William Osborne), and believe it will greatly reduce crime in that neighborhood, they had a list of other robberies and assaults that the gang he led were suspected of being involved with- over a dozen. Hopefully other kids will learn that following that path will lead to the same result. And his encounter, however unfortunate, has probably saved others from injury or death because Osborne will not continue his crime spree... hopefully the rest of his gang learn something and don't try to continue on that path.
