don't know if anyone saw the "Frontline" episode last night re: Cliven and Ammon Bundy where the FBI posed as a documentary film crew, but here's an interesting story about another one of their "investigations" from Glendale

You would think the people screaming bloody murder about this would be real journalists.

After all, who the hell is going to talk to anybody who purports to be a journalist after it becomes apparent that he or she might actually be an FBI agent or other law enforcement?

I realize there is no Constitutionally recognized "privilege" that would prevent evidence gathered like this from being admissible but it seems to violate an unspoken "gentleman's agreement" between law enforcement and the media. And it seems entirely likely that it would have a "chilling effect" on the press.

I guess I'm just surprised that I'm only hearing about this now.

Yeah, but he went after those icky constitution folks, so the media is cool with it.

They should have continued with the prosecution process until he fessed up as to what his real objectives were.

If he was actually asking questions and doing investigative work, it should have been obvious that he was not a real journalist.

I prefer women that shower, but to each their own.

Sounds about as legit as the undercover work years back where they were banging and impregnating hippie chicks (and in some cases marrying them for years) and making explosives and being political rioters. I'm not exactly sure at what point they ever did any investigative work, unless of course the FBI was interested in hippy crotches.

N.Y. C. 1979-80 A new towing co. moved in to the area.
Moved a lot of cocaine, weed and other substances, insurance fraud (stolen cars & M.C's) as their M.O. Convinced a lot of people that they were The Place to Go for all your problems.
8 months later on the front page a picture of their impound yard, that was a shuttered mini mall. 200+ arrest for ins fraud, who knows how many leads they acquired for future drug arrest. Those guys were snorting in public as much as they sold.

Sounds to me, and I'm not an expert by any means- but reading the story, sounds like Mr. Iranian High-Rise dude is the subject of some super secret FBI investigation, and they didn't want to disclose to the local PD that this guy was a Feeb. Pretty intriguing nonetheless. I'm thinking perhaps Mr. Persian Rug store owner is a possible terrorist.

I'm a little slow on the uptake here. What did the FBI guy do wrong?

Prima facie... conducted Private Investigations without a license in CO. He is a Fed, but they didn't know that at the time.

"You see Ahmed, we place bomb in building while build and then when filled with dirty America we blow up! Is perfect crime!"
"Why not blow up building already made?"
"What are you, Sunni!? This way we get insurance money too!"

I get that part, but I got the impression that impersonating a reporter is some how off limits. Seems like a great idea to me.

From the perspective of the article or from the perspective of LE?

I guess I was just reading too far into Martinjmprs post about an unspoken gentlemen's agreement.

I think that would come into the sphere of local LE not wanting Fed to be pissing in the community Wheaties. Fed running investigations locally finishes their stuff and leaves, I'd assume. Local LE have to deal with local press who is now pissed off that no one will talk to them?

Dunno.

I imagine it would be like when the various TF's would role into our AO, blow everything up, kill folks, and go on to the next HVT area and we were the ones having to regain local trust.
