View Full Version : Got Snow?

What are you seeing in your area?

It's coming down big time here, 17 inches so far. The national weather service upped their prediction to 21-33 inches in our area of NW Boulder County. The electricity went out at 6:15. No electricity, no water with the pump system. At least we have heat, and cell service with internet.

I got the driveway plowed out this morning, but the state plows are barely keeping up.

It's a tough time for hummingbirds and other birds. Lots of hummingbirds at the feeders this morning. Weird seeing them fly about in the snow.

Barely an inch on the ground here, roads are just slushy. My boss still decided to "work from home" today SMH.

Just rain at my place when I left at six this morning.

4" or so in Castle Rock at my house. Not sticking to the roads though. My trees had to get shook off first thing this morning. They were close to breaking. Snow is letting up but I'm sure itll start back up later when the temps dip again.

Just rain at mine too, Ray, but once I got within a mile of Boulder it started snowing. There is roughly 1" of slush on the handrails of the patio and anything elevated off the ground, but it's super soppy and melting for the most part. It has caused some power flickers in town though... but nothing more than just a flicker.

Wicked hail at my house last night, got the last car in the garage just in time. Was pretty wet though so I don't think it would have done any damage anyways.

Was outside in a t shirt shorts and muck boots taking a shower and digging waterways so it could all get away from the house. I now realize how shitty my builder did at grading. And I found it odd at the end of one gutter on the front of the house the water was just pouring out over the top. Seems I may be in need of a downspout right there.

Don't you love that?
Just wait until it settles. I havent even tried to landscape the front of mine because I know I will need more fill.

We got some pretty hard rain last night, still nothing but rain and mud at my place.

A couple inches of wet slushy snow in Black Forest. Made the dirt roads nice and messy. Had a showing for our house this morning and the agent cancelled because they "couldn't make it there" Lol. I'm guessing the buyers are probably more fair weather Californians and aren't going to like living on a dirt road in the winter.

About 4" in my corner of Centennial, starting to stick to the driveway and sidewalk. Just got an email promoting Bike Night tonight at the Harley dealer LOL.

We've currently got about 18" in Gilpin county at 9100' elevation. It really is weird seeing hummingbirds flying around in a whiteout.

No snow here. However the side roads around W. Greeley have significant water on them, bringing it down to 1 lane . The Platte is running fast & high.

About 6 inches of sloppy slush here in Golden, melting fast.

Slushy snow here in Niwot. Thankfully we can work from home, so I'm sending my team out so we're not fighting it AND rush hour traffic later. I mean, it's not bad by Colorado standards yet, but I don't know if the plows even come out this way.

I'm sorta surprised at the reports from the golden area. The snow is still coming down in Gilpin County and I've currently got 23" of accumulation.

I had about an inch or so of snow/slush in Briargate when I left the house with more coming down steadily but at work near Academy/Fountain in COS, the precipitation has ended and the roads are dry. I expect more tonight but for now, it's all good.

Tree branches are now down in the street out front, the tarps over my garden require hourly "maintenance" and our shrubs are flat on the ground.

Earth is warming at such an alarming rate my plants can't hardly take it anymore.

Irving
05-18-2017, 13:58
My plan is to secure one side of the tarps high up on the fence, and the other at the garden level wood. Is that an option for you?

We've done that with one of them and the other is stretched over a steel beam that is running between two ladders on either side of one plot. We aren't bothering with the bed that has the kale and other seeded stuff but all the pepper/tomato plants are 18" tall and we are trying (as best we can) to save as many as possible.

I thought we were late getting this stuff in the ground when we did. Now this....

Heavy wet snow here, very large "flakes" that are more like airborne slushies. Tree's are not happy...

LOL, I remember last day of school in 8th grade ... teachers were irritated that we weren't cutting or leaving early. I had one that directly asked, "why are you here?"

Maybe I should run out and buy bread and milk?

The power and cell service was out for 3 hours this morning. I've been shoveling, running the snow thrower and plowing all day. The state highway hasn't been plowed for a while, 18" on the road. Not a good day for a drive in the mountains.

Snow has stopped for now. I measured 30.5" at the house.

We probably have a few hundred hummingbirds now using 10 feeders. The neighbors have 14 feeders out. I installed plastic plates as snow shields and have used hot water to keep the feeder ports clear of ice. It will be a tough night for the little ones. A 4 gram hummer has scant defense from a 10 lb. plop of falling snow.

We watched a young bull moose walk through the yard this morning. He wasn't having any trouble with the snow.

Nothing like what Hummer got, but hopefully this works out for the garden. Pretty much everything has sprouted (planted the Sunday right before the hail), and I don't want to lose anything if I can avoid it.

My front porch when I got home. Had to snow blow for three hours to get the truck up the driveway. I'd say about two and a haft feet.

That's an impressive effort, Irving. You would have been well prepared for any snow.

The very little snow I'm getting is still very heavy and already weighing down the tarps. I'm thinking about going back out there and securing the bottom the same way that I did the top, but I'm just now getting dry and warm. A lot of effort for what will effectively be a one day event.

I would have rather had snow. We got lots of rain, and my driveway is trying to wash out. Piss poor grading when they put it in. Had to run out and dig to allow water to run off, but barely slowed it down.

Need more material and a tractor to grade some of this shit.

Hummer
05-18-2017, 20:18
Yes, a one day event there but it will likely take a week for all the snow to melt here. It's 8:15 and nearly dark, yet we must have 40 hummingbirds on the feeders. Their neck, back and bellies are bulging with sugar water that hopefully will hold them through the night in torpor.

I woke up @ 0530 with a heavy covering of snow on thecars and yard (more than a dusting, but nithing really measurable). Looked outside @ 0600 and there was an inch on the cars/yard and was sticking to the road/drive. Left for work @ 0630 to 2"+ on the cars, yard and road. Cleaned off the drivers side of my windshield then moved to the passenger side. When I finished the passenger side I already had 1/4" of snow on the drivers side. Driving South through the Springs the snow pretty much disappeared when I got to Barnes Road (East/West road). Roads were slick though and before I got to the next East /West crossroad there was an accident between 2 cars that had just occured and both looked like they'd get totalled.

Always fun driving in weather like this. 1/2 the drivers do well and the other half are split between those going way too slow, some going way too fast and others still tailgating so close that they'll take out multiple cars if something goes bad.

Probably a couple of feet of snow here.
I am sure we will have to bring in the hummers feeders in the morning to thaw them out.

We lost power for over 24 hours (score for the win, backup generator!). Hard to tell the exact amount because it was melting and packing fast, but a conservative estimate would be 24", wife thinks 30". Like Hummer said, the hummers were bummed. Still a frenzy at our feeders. My vegetable garden survived, barely.
