Are there any ranges/gun clubs that have an outdoor range that have steel targets on site to shoot? Living in an apartment near downtown and I dont have room to store a bunch of targets/stands so hoping to find a location that has those for you. Thanks!

Colorado Rifle Club I believe, but I'm not sure they are setup for just anyone to come shoot them - more for a training class or competition.
not really close either.

Join Colorado Rifle Club steel targets are available on the Silhouette range just be aware competitions and organized shoots take precedence so if you choose to join you can check the calendar on the website 9 out of 10 times when I am out there it is available. Another thing to be aware of the steel available is for rifle off the line not set up for 3 gun or pistol. You can also bring your own steel and use it in the berms on the far east of the ranges.

Thanks again for the info. They are a bit far out but I guess I shouldnt expect there to be much within an hour of the metro area for something like this.

Golden Gun Club is semi-close to the metro area. They have places to hang steel or you could bring your own. It’s a great range for pistol, shotgun and rifle out to 500 yards. Bring a friend or two for $5 each with your membership.

Yea ,I think that's the only one nearby
Need to be a member or be with a member to shoot at CRC. Just to be clear before you attempt to drive over an hour East only to be turned away.

Or be shooting at a match.

Did you join yet? I had my orientation this weekend and now I need to fabricate some steel plates and IPSC frames. Looking forward to shooter no there at least every week.
Nah, I've no intention of joining, even though it's by far my most favorite range of any at which I've shot.

Same here...
CRC is hand's down the best range I've been to in recent memory, but have absolutely no intention of rejoining unless/until the BoD decides to make at least the most rudimentary effort to bring their membership processes (billing/renewal/etc.) into at least proximity with this century...

Become a member. Get involved. Change it from the inside.
Change is always bad. Lots of shooting range Board of Directors often feel this way.

I just renewed my crc membership and didn't think it was that bad. They mailed me the renewal, I filled it out, wrote a check, mailed it to the address. The orientation was a bit disappointing. Should have had the new members actually go with the instructor to the ranges for a visual explanation of the ranges and how they operate. Oddly we had a lot of useless talk about turkeys and turtles. Was getting frustrating.

Yeah I think I received this years renewal last week.
There is kind of a power shift going on there. A couple of people on the Board of Directors have resigned.
I should clarify that I don't have any issues with how the range is run, because I honestly don't know. I just don't have a particular need to join. However, I could be talked into a membership just due to appreciation for how much time I've spent out there.

Ok, great. Now that I’ve spent my money, what kind of problems should I be aware of?

No runnin' and gunnin' in the berm area unless you can show proficiency and been approved to do so.

That's one big issue; never was able to coordinate scheduling to get officially cleared (that said, I usually went midweek when it was quiet and had the place to myself.....)
Biggest issue for me is the renewal/payment process and it's utter dependency on snail-mail and paper/check/mo payments...Have any problems or questions, send a letter...
This lack of efficient communications for active/renewing membership, combined with lack of any electronic payment mechanisms, was tedious (e.g. have gone mostly paperless, dont use checks for anything, etc.) and so it was easier to just switch over to PSC.
As for getting involved, I honestly just don't have the bandwidth for that. My concerns were expressed on several occasions, given zero consideration, so for now I'll just keep an eye out for when things improve or active involvement becomes a viable option.

Not many. The BOD is working on some things and it is a LOT better than when I first joined. 3 BODs resigned, I have been told why, but not something worth talking about on a forum. I have been able to make good progress in rolling back some of the archaic issues. I just sent some newsletter items to the new BOD member who is doing that, one of which is the March 3rd clearance for East Range holster work and dynamic movement.
When clubs grow (was 550 when I joined and now is at 1600+) you get folks who don't give a rip about anything else but themselves. I took a 2 drawer filing cabinet off the East range 2 weeks ago that was shot up and left. BBQ grills, tanks, TVs have been left out there as well. 95% of the people are great and stay within what is reasonable, but that other 5% ruin it for the rest of us. The steel target on the 200 yard berm...got stolen and then morons shot up the posts so I really could not even replace it. CRC spent $300 for that target. The one at 1045 on the HP range has done pretty well, and I will work on that a little the spring and maybe even add a target.
On the Silhouette range (sorry but it is what it is) there is steel, but Idiot who manages the range put AR500 targets at 50 yards and they got destroyed, even after he was told NOT to put them that close. BOD pretty much ignored the whole thing because he was too difficult to deal with. At 300 to 500, they would have lasted for years. Then when they had holes in them, he swapped out with others so all $1K of the new steel was ruined, and is still there. One of the people who resigned the BOD, but is still in change of that range. At some point, I guess you just have to let idiots be themselves and avoid them.
When folks volunteer their time and resources to build things like tables for the ranges, then morons staple targets to them and shoot them up...C'mon man...not cool. So those kinds of things get brought up, as well as trash, and everyone tries to figure out who should take care if it and how. I honestly think that there are a dozen slobs and a dozen range Nazis out there that if we could get them to not renew their membership, all would run smoother.
It is a really good club and the improvements have come, if not slow at times.
No runnin' and gunnin' in the berm area unless you can show proficiency and been approved to do so.
It is not so much proficiency as to make sure people understand the parameters and risks and don't put others at risk. The vast majority of the folks I have had to talk to are ones with targets placed so that their rounds are impacting the berm floors at a shallow angle and ricocheting out of the berms.
Come on, DireWolf. Writing one check a year when I renew my membership keeps me in practice for writing checks. Wouldn’t want to go buy a house and not remember how to write a check.
As far as some of the yahoos who treat the ranges with no respect, shoot inappropriate targets, leave their mess behind, etc. that stuff irks me to no end. I was a member for many years at a private facility almost as nice as CRC (the longest rifle range only went to 600 yards due to property limitations) and we just didn’t see the kind of misuse of the facilities there that I see at CRC. In order to become a member you had to have a referral from another member. In other words unless someone knew you were a responsible shooter you weren’t going to be joining. Kind of eliminated the riff raff that way. CRC has no requirements for joining other than paying your dues. Any joe blow that wants to join can. Almost like a public range where anyone and everyone is welcome.

$65 a year at CRC, $100 work bond. $100 initiation. Steel on the silhouette range. Pistol, shotgun and rifle to 1000 yd. Beats the Boulder gun club $1000 initiation with 10 year wait list, $250 year renewal. Cherry Creek private club was $365 year renewal and an initiation and work bond last I knew.
CRC isnt so bad, I do wish the douchebags would pack out their trash and use approved targets though...........
We got a look at the "future projects" list at the MD meeting...close to $4M of wants. It might seem piddly, but trash pick up and leveling the East range berms when people drive in them when muddy costs money that the club can't then put towards improvements.
You all realize they spent close to $100K putting in the trailer pads on the East Range. You can make a weekend of it if you have an RV. :)

I didnt type that last line very well and may have caused confusion. I meant to say that the douchebags who do not clean up the trash they bring in and leave are jerks and the guys that shoot non approved targets and leave debris are also jerks. THis was not a slam at CRC management.

I hear ya, but it's not so much that as the fact that:
1. I don't use/keep checks anymore, so it's a trip to the bank for a CC (which is how I handle that extremely infrequent need). I suppose I could order some new ones, just haven't felt the need to do so for a while...
2. When my membership expired I had been on the road for a bit for work, and missed the renewal letter. When I reached out to get renewed/reinstated, I was told to mail a letter, request member renewal info, mail a check once that came back, wait for that to clear and updated membership info sent out, etc.; No option for accelerating the process was available, and rather than spend 3-4 weeks going back and forth via snail-mail (and comletely burning all the down-time I had at that point), I just signed up for membership with PSC in person that Friday (which although smaller than CRC, is a very nice range as well, and renewal is as easy as showing up on the weekend with a credit card...)
I will say that I don't remember having issues with trash, and always brought my own steel with me, but it's been a while.
That's my only real issue, and it is a great range; will likely re-join if/when the renewal process is updated a bit and when it becomes easier to coordinate scheduling for dynamic movement clearance (to be fair, scheduling challenges are mostly around my availability limitations)...

DireWolf, do you have a way to process an EFT or have a check sent from a bank checking account, or just no Checking account at all?
The trash/abuse of targets and such started to become a problem in the summer of 2015.
