NFA engraving while you wait in Northen Colorado...Who?

Yes, I know damagefactory does it, I know engrave cave does it, I know Colorado Gunwrites does it. However none of those are in Northern Colorado in my book. Driving to Denver or further is not something I want to ever, ever, ever do. EVER!!!

Other threads mentioned that tacticool in Greeley doesnt actually engrave, they send them off. I dont want to send them off, I want to wait and take them home with me.

3 waiting for the anxiety meds to kick in..


Last 2 visits, 25 was like a demo derby. Left lane EXITS NOW cutting of 2 suv's and a loaded 40' cattle carrier . Someone did a DUDE stop in the left lane. When he finally realized everyone but him were stopped. He left more rubber on the pavement than a canal street hooker.

Yes CGW does a nice job, as DF does too. The idea of having to drive there for a non-emergency isn't even on radar, for some of us weld cty folk.

You can engrave the information for the Uzi on the barrel if you're doing a SBR. It would be a lot cheaper to ship just the barrel.

The engraver doesn't need the whole gun, just the part that gets engraved. They don't need the stock or any of the internal parts. By stripping everything off of your Tommy gun or AR you could probably cut the shipping weight in half and reduce the size of the box. I usually leave the easily removed parts home most of the time when have I taken something to get engraved. It makes it easier for them to work with it.

I am of the opinion that marking the receiver on your Model B would reduce the value. Also if you mark the barrel you can switch between SBR and regular non-NFA gun when ever you want to, including when you sell it. The biggest drawback I see is every short barrel you put on it would need to be engraved.

It is always a good idea to have licensed individual handling your firearms, especially when they are being "worked on"

Because I was in contact with them before hand and set up a day / time to come in they did the engraving while I waited.
I provided a copy of the ATF instruction that describes the size, depth and font required for the markings.
They may still have that sheet.
The approved FORM 1 showed exactly what needed to be engraved on the receiver.
As to the "where" its engraved, the guidance just said it has to be readily visible on the firearm.

T&T did what was required, was fast, did a great job and charged a fair price.

Good luck man. I started a similar thread years ago & came up blank. I've since had Colorado Gun Writes do several of my firearms from poly, to aluminum to good ol' steel. Great work while you wait & he is happy to put your engraving in all sorts of creative/awesome locations w/o any additional charge. That being said, it's a PITA to make that drive these days. I usually try to knock out several at once & some of my buddies will even car pool along w/me. It seems as though there's a market up north if anyone w/time & ambition is listening.

Thompson, UZI and an AR. I cant ship the first two cheaply, way too much money to ship. Everyone is too far away. Im over 80 miles to Denver one way. Much further to Castle Rock and the springs.

I shipped one of my Thompsons to my Dad, it was very expensive to ship. Obviously an IMI Uzi model b is pretty heavy too.

You can ship just the receiver for the AR and UZI. Barreled receiver for the Thompson. Being you are in state, shipping would be reasonable. As we are an 07/02 SOT we can receive and ship these for you. As far as location, the engravings have to be on the receiver themselves. We do most AR's in the trigger well, Uzi's underneath on the back and Thompsons on the receiver under the barrel. When blacked out when completed they are very inconspicuous but visible for ATF inspection.

uzi in the pic is mine and built on home built receiver. The engraving was made to replicate the IMI original markings. That is prior to blacking out.

When you are making a Short Barrel Rifle from an existing rifle using a Form 1 you can use the original manufacturers information. You only need to add your makers name and location. Your name and location can be on the "frame, receiver, or barrel". See the link above.

I used Troy @CGW for my first NFA items, and he does great work and is a great guy. Used to talk to him when working the tanner shows too and he always made time for chit chat.

Paddywagon is closer for me and did my last three NFA. A DIY Ti can and two SBR lowers.

Awesome results. Highly recommended.

He did them while I waited, but since he's SOT, that makes it convenient if you need to ship in state.

The problem with doing NFA items is
1) The SOT. This is something that could be handled by having the person standing there or having someone with an SOT do it.

But the real problem.

I dont know what engraving costs (as I said, I do myself), but I suspect $25-50?

There is a lot of risk with modifying someone's NFA item for them if they dont like something. For $25-50 is it really a good business risk to use a $30K laser system and hope someone likes how it turns out?

Maybe the way to do it is to rent time on a laser system and let people do it themselves...then if they screw it up..their fault...

K&k laser in Evans is the closest that I know actually does the work but not while you wait. Prices are fair.
