The idea, spurred by advocates for immigrants, is simple: Conviction of some crimes that carry a potential penalty of at least a year in jail can put an immigrant on the radar for deportation. That’s true whether the immigrants charged with violations are in the country legally, with student visas or green cards, or illegally.
By making sure that most of its ordinance violations carry penalties of less than a year — a sentence rarely given for them anyway — the city could help immigrants who commit petty offenses lay low.

Yeah...full blown sanctuary city now.

To give you an idea, this is for even "middle" level crimes, as they call it. Things like:

Middle level: Crimes including shoplifting, trespassing, the first or second instance of domestic violence, and simple assault would be newly eligible for a maximum 300 days in jail and $999 fine.

Good thing we're making sure those DV people are "at ease", even after their second offense.

This will change exactly nothing. No need for crying.

So am I getting this right....?

If you're an illegal immigrant (meaning you've already committed at least 1 crime) and commit one of these types of crimes, you get a reduced sentence... But if you're an American citizen and you've never committed any crimes before, and you are convicted of one of these, you get a full sentence?

Two words for that nonsense: Bull Shit.

F**k it. I'm changing my last name to Sanchez and then I'm heading downtown to assault a total stranger.

Everyone who's posted so far.

Bitching? Perhaps, crying? Not hardly...

You are correct that this will change nothing, as the laws will apply to everyone (from what I gather). The motive and timing for the change is very suspect tho, and represents the path Denver (don't forget who controls the polls) is continuing to head.

Unless you are Pancho (some members may remember him), or now Irving? I can't see how you wouldn't be a bit frustrated with this.

My understanding is they're reducing the sentence for EVERYONE but the reduction is to help immigrants. 1 year in jail gets them on the deportation watch list or something so by making all these crimes 364 days in jail or less, they won't go on the immigration radar for committing these crimes.

And in response, Fed crime terms for watchlist will be dropped to 363 days.

HEY! I can hope, right?

That would make for an entertaining tit for tat between the Feds and Denver

I know that everyone looks at just illegal immigrants, but that recent EO is very broad and can have dire consequences for many. Say you're a legal immigrant with a green card. You go to renew your gree card like you've done for the past 30 years and instead of the renewal you expect, this time they say, "Hey, remember that time when you were 18 years old and you got into a fist fight with your brother, your parents didn't know what to do so they called the police and you both ended up with a DV charge? Well, instead of renewing your green card like we've been doing for decades, we're going to deport you instead." Tough shit, criminal.

Would also prevent any of these charges from making someone a "prohibiting person" in terms of legally purchasing/owning a firearm?

I think the rule is if they have been convicted of a “crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.”

I think any DV conviction or active RO gets flagged by CBI and denied.

Changing the law to benefit one segment of the population is outrageous.

And? Tough shit is right. If you're here 30 years, 20 years, or even 10 years legally and you haven't worked through the prcess to become a naturalized citizen then that's on you, not the community you've enjoyed the benefits of without oweing any responsibility to. My heart fails to bleed for those folks.

Honestly Stu, if you believe the crap you've been spewing here lately I'm concerned with what's pushed you so far to the left. You've always had some left-leaning beliefs but you've really gone out there over the last 6 or so months. Frankly, I wonder if you actually believe what you've been saying or you're trying to be a ByteStryke type of provocateur.

Changing the law to benefit one segment of the population is outrageous.

Agreed. And that's the point of this whole thing isn't it? This isn't about public safety, it's about helping out crminal individuals who are not lawful citizens of this nation. I'd be a bit bothered by this if the target demographic was citizens, but given that's clearly not the intended group to benefit from these changes I'm displeased.
