I am wondering if we have more than just a couple of us old time Garand shooters on here?? Perhaps most of the young shooters on here don't know what a Garand is and what they were used for many years ago. [blaster]

I've got one in .308 as well... didn't have anything else in .30-06, and didn't want a new caliber (but I didn't entertain .260 conversion... yet...)
Not sure what you qualify as a "young shooter".. but my 10 year old son loves my Garand!

Thanks to USMC88-93, Hoser, 68charger and wctriumph for responding to my inquiry. When I mentioned "young shooters" I meant shooters in their late teens through their mid-20's who do very litle shooting or visiting of the ranges. Parts are still somewhat available for the Garands but original parts supplies (NOS) are starting to "dry up". At least there are not many parts subject to breakage or wearing out in the Garand.

Just won a match shooting old service weapons and new ones
I have a post-Korean War era Harrington and Richardson that I bought from the DCM/Department of the Army 35 years ago It had been re barreled and re parkerized like new when I got it.. The H&R's were the best machined and finished of all the Garand makes. I shot it in highpower matches over 2 decades, and hunted with it taking my first deer, elk and antelope. It's my truck gun. I also have a post-Korean era Springfield that was rebuilt and re parked before storage. It's a CMP select grade that I bought about 20 years ago. I always wanted a Winchester, too, but the price for good ones blew out of sight.
I reload for the Garands and get a kick out of shooting them. I keep a supply of surplus M2 Ball, AP and National Match ammo. Some of the National Match in my collection was manufactured as early as 1927. Most that I shoot up gets reloaded with Hornady Match, some with Nosler Partitions.

Hummer, nice assembly of Garand stuff that you have pictured. Thanks!
Shooting a Garand is a boat load of fun, it always makes me smile. Big boom but soft shooting. They are amazing machines. Every red-blooded American male oughta have one.

Older thread but recently picked up a British Proof Lend Lease M1 Garand that dates to 1942. It is the typical mix master with Springfield receiver and Winchester barrel. I also picked up a Remington 1903 with receiver and barrel dated in 1942 as well. Things are just right in the world after shooting both of them.
A M1 Carbine is next on my list to round out the collection for WWII US rifles.

Heads up to anyone looking, the CMP website just updating this morning with some Field Grade WRA (winchester) garands available, $830.
On the last batch of service grade WRAs, all guns had WRA receivers, but some received non-WRA barrels, and some received new CMP wood.
Also the last batch of service grade WRAs sold out in about 2 weeks. I'd suggest over-nighting your order packet to be sure it gets there in time.

Got a call early this morning from CMP processing my order. Apparently the credit card charge was denied. Called the credit card company, and the transaction was flagged as possible fraud. Got it cleared up with the cc company, and I just got notified that the charge went thru. I should have my garand by tomorrow. An order of privi partisan 7.62x51 ammo will also be arriving tomorrow from sgammo. With any luck I'll be shooting my garand wednesday or thursday.

I keep coming back to the first page in this thread just because I like seeing these two GREAT photos!
Yesterday, I drove up the Bunce School Road to a favorite spot off a side road to do a little target practice. I ran a couple hundred rounds through the AR with the new Omega at 50 yds, then the G27 at 15. Decided I couldn't go home without hugging the Garand with a few clips of M2 Ball. The fun factor skyrocketed! I'll bet the shoot meters down in City Park were pegging 100.

It finally got here.... and worth the wait! (short wait actually, but felt like it took forever) Dropped the order forms in the mail last wednesday, delivered to my door at about 9:30am this morning. CMP 308 Special. Post Korea Springfield receiver that looks brand new. New CMP wood and new criterion 308 barrel.
http://i.imgur.com/8fmAXl3.jpg
Field stripped it, disassembly was fairly easy. Got it greased up good, and reassembled. Closing the trigger guard latch was very difficult, which I've read is normal for new wood (hasn't compressed down yet).
Lowered the rear sight elevation completely, and then went up 10 clicks. Centered rear sight, and headed to the range. Only 25 yards for now, but first 8 shots were all pretty close.
http://i.imgur.com/kEKPYSh.jpg
Fired another clip offhand, group moved up and right some. No issues shooting it lefty, a couple pieces of brass went off my hat, but none to the face, and didn't get hit by the clip ejecting either.

VERY NICE!!!
What a beauty. The dark grains of wood that flow through the grip of that stock are exceptional. The CMP has put out some fine rifles, especially since they began building them with new wood and barrels. I can see Garands living hundreds, probably thousands of years in the future if citizens are able to keep them. It's on all of us to protect and pass them on, beyond whatever missions they may have to endure. A tool for the ages. Darth Vader beware.

My father in law down in texas is a disabled vet. He served in the army just after korea, and was wounded in vietnam. He fondly remembers his Garand from his training and early army days. I'm looking forward to a range trip with him and the garand, either next time he comes up here, or the wife and I drive down there.
Last time he came up he loved shooting my 1911, he really wants to get a vietnam era M1911a1. I'm keeping an eye out for one on a private sale, but if I don't find anything, I'm hoping the CMP is able to start selling off the old army ones.

Damn, now I want to take mine out and warm it up! I have an awesome '43 Springfield that I bought from a member here long ago, no idea who it was or if he's even still here. But I restocked it and had all the metal parts reparked/reblued, so it looks and functions like new. A great shooter!

Up to a few days ago, I had never seen/noticed a chunk of wood apparently missing on the stocks of some of the CMP furnished new wood stocks. Found out (from the CMP) that stocks like this were originally fabricated for the IHC Garands. This missing chunk is just to the immediate right of the heel of the receiver and perfectly alright - nothing is actually missing.

Some of the posters are a bit cranky. Don't post until you've read through the stickies and done searches to see if your question has been answered.
There are subs for M1 Carbine, bolts, etc...
Also has classifieds for parts and firearms. I've seen a lot of great deals and you get sellers who know their guns are legit rather than taking your chances with GB or gun shows.

And the CMP Forum does have buyer/seller feedback to check on previous transactions by individuals. Some buyers are known to buy and flip very soon after making their purchase direct from CMP. My purchases have been very satisfactory when also buying from fellow CMP forum members. Only thing questionable is the UNKNOWN quality when we are buying a Garand direct from the CMP. It is truly the luck of the draw but I believe buyers are usually pretty satisfied.

My experience as well.
If you don't want luck of the draw, you pay a premium on the market. I paid that premium on my first M1 but not the second. They are both Springfields, '42 and '43. One has a nice (probably older repark) deep olive finish, the other a fresh repark.

Most people don't. I think it's fine for a shooter but feels "fat" in the hands. A lot of people reshape and refinish them. They come bone dry and need a lot of oil. I'm in the RLO camp hoping to get some nice red tones out of it someday.
My '42 has some kind of (NOS?) replacement from the early 60s (I think). It's perfect! I really wish some of these guns could talk--they'd have some great stories.

I tried the Boyd stock first and I just did not like it at all. I sold it along with the REALLY, REALLY poor condition stock that was on the rifle when I bought it (it was not worth saving). The money from that paid for the CMP stock kit ($149.00) and lunch too boot. Mine is a Blue Sky, South Korea import, excellent shooter.

I don't know who makes them for the CMP but they are not the overmold fat stocks that you buy from Boyd's. The one I bought was exactly the same spec' as the original I replaced and smaller than the Boyd's all around.
Been looking for an IHC Garand for years. Sentimental reasons.
I have an FN49. Fun but it's not the same. A friend took his first elk with a Garand and that kinda stuck with me.
A .308 Garand would be a hoot but still a fan of 30.06.
Looking for an M1 carbine just for fun. Reloading dies are cheap.
I bought a Boyd's set, ended up selling it unused. It was just too fat for my tastes. Feller that bought it was building a target rifle and wanted exactly that - a fat, heavy stock.
Wish I could remember who I got my new stock from. They're rumored to be made by Boyd's, but to this company's specs, which are WWII dimensions and a lot slimmer than the Boyd's or CMP stocks. I ended up shaving off just a bit more, for my own taste. It's really bitchin' now!

Yes, SA refers to the Springfield Armory, 3 66 refers to the date of manufacture, so it was re barreled in the Viet Nam era. It could be a brand new, unused barrel.
A lot of Garands were armory rebuilt and put into storage in the early to mid 1960's as the US entered the Viet Nam War. My Garands are Korean War era rifles re barreled and re parkerized, marked SA dated 1963 & 1965. Like new.
Cartouches on the stocks and other parts markings may show that they came from different armories. My first Garand, an H&R from the DCM in 1983 cost me $97.50 mailed direct from the Dept. of the Army in Anniston. It has a Rock Island Arsenal stock which I refinished and slimmed the grip but preserved the cartouches. It was my high power target rifle for two decades. For a long time it was my only high power rifle and it has taken several deer, elk and pronghorn. It's still a superb shooter.
Agree it is a Springfield barrel from 1966. There was still some limited production of M1s in the mid 1960s primarily National Match rifles with the last authorized serial number about 6,099,900.
I am curious what the serial number (approximately) is on the rifle.

The SN is from 1943, Springfield. I bought the rifle almost 40 years ago for $135, it has Blue Sky on the barrel. I was told by the gun shop manager that it had been imported from South Korea. The stock was pretty bad so I replaced it with the CMP stock w/ metal for $149 some 15 - 16 years ago.
Thanks for the information you guys, I appreciate it.
Blue sky were Korean imports.
Nice rifle.
I took one of my M1s with a scout scope to the range a couple of Fridays ago. Set up a target at 300 yards (had a rangefinder with us). Pleased with the result.
Don't know why the picture is off by 90 degrees. I will try to fix it.

Guess I never saw this thread before.
Yes I own a couple. Love the platform. Ammo can be pricey but I have found some deals around. I usually do a zero out to 200 yards on my Garand irons. I am hoping to purchase another from CMP in the next year or so but would love to actually go to one of their physical locations.
We do a family shooting get together once or twice a year where the extended family shows up some shooters some not. They always bring friends and girlfriends. The M1 is always a very big hit with everyone.
How does this happen?

That's one of the M1D's sold thru a lottery done by CMP in the late 90's. I got one, complete as you see it, for $675. Sold it for 4G last year. That won't bring as much since all of the parts are unwrapped and out of their wax paper, with the wax paper tossed.

My first M1 Garand was a DCM purchase in the late 80's. At that time one of the quals was that you had to have participated in a DCM match and prove it. So I did. My first was a Springfield, over 6 mil serial number, one of the highest numbers known. Paid $165. Still have it.

My head was up my ass in the 90s and early 00s. I thought one AR, one pistol, and one shotgun was enough.
So many things I should have bought... But I paid my bills instead! [fail]

I hear CMP is getting 100k Garands back from Korea and Turkey in and they will pick out the ones they like clean the rest and shoot them and put them up for sale soon.
I just got green lighted last night by the spousal unit to get an M1 Garand for my birthday this year. I'm trying to learn as much I can about the various receiver manufacturers. The CMP currently doesn't have any specials.
I already have .308/7.62x51 in inventory, but I think I want to keep it 'correct' and stick with the 30-06. In the current CMP Service Grade category they're selling SA/H&R rifles for $750 and IHC receiver rifles for $1080. Is having the IHC receiver worth the difference?
Any word on when those 100K Garands may show up for sale?
ETA: Were these "100K" coming from the Philippines? From what I've read of a 2015 American Rifleman article (https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2015/10/27/the-international-harvester-m1-garand-rifle/), most of the IHC receiver rifles were sent to foreign governments, so maybe the CMP IHC M1s may be from these lend/lease rifles returning to the US?
They are our rifles. Turkey was the other place they are coming back from. So expect them to never be fired and only dropped once.

Looks like prices of the all grades went up slightly a couple days ago. $650 for field grade, $750 for service grade.
And I'm seeing reports that most of the recently received garands from CMP are coming from the Turkish supply. They meet the grade condition, but many of them appear to be arriving a bit dirtier than what we've typically seen from CMP. Seems to be sure for all grades.
I've also heard that most of the philippine rifles are in worse shape than the turkish rifles. But they are currently still processing the turkish rifles, so there might be a few pretty ones hiding in the philippine batch.
From someone who had gotten a field grade:
This is the dirtiest field grade I have ever received from CMP. There was so much sand and grit in every part of the rifle. Barrel cleaning is next on the list, so I can't wait to see what comes out of that.
And someone else suggested with these turkish rifles, it's probably worth it to spend the extra $100 and get service grade.
Another comment from a field grade buyer:
One last thing, I learned not to let a Turkish soldier borrow your rifle --- I am almost certain my rifle had never been cleaned once since being sent there (I have never seen so much carbon residue on a rifle before - it was completely saturating the cleaning rags and making them solid black). The fact that it apparently kept working though does prove what a sturdy design it is!

<snip>
I think the price difference reflects the relative rarity and thus the collector value of the IHC receivers. Same is true of the Winchester receivers. The Harrington & Richardson's were the best machined and finished of all the Garand makes with the Springfield Armory a close second. It kind of defies the expectation since H&R was a maker of cheaper firearms.
If you're going to spend the money, go Service Grade. Don't worry about the specific rifle you'll be getting. Anything at those prices will give you far more value than buying on the private market. Look at the auction sites and compare. $750 for a serviceable M1 is a steal!
If for some reason you hate what you get, you can always sell/trade on the CMP forum. Keep in mind all of these rifles are collectible to some degree and all are special.

I don't think the CMP is in danger of selling out on this latest batch any time soon. There was a bit of panic in 2016 were I think a lot of folks rushed to get what M1s they had.
And then there was the M1 Carbine lottery. :(
If the CMP releases the M1911A1s this year, all focus will be on that. I wonder if they'll do a lottery again. Was a lot of work and frustration and more than a few complaints.

they've already said the 1911s will be a lottery style. They'll take some number of orders (without payment I think), then randomly assign numbers to each one, and process them in that order.
I missed the m1 carbine lottery, so not sure if that was done the same way.

That's how they said things would be done with the M1 Carbines. They set a deadline to have a completed package at CMP with everything completed. I paid $24 (IIRC) to get my packet there in time. Then they (allegedly) took a USPS delivery the next day after their deadline so folks were upset because the odds of being drawn decreased from 2/5 to 1/4.
I had the CC payment method filed in because I didn't want a check out there that might not get cashed which was smart. My card was never charged. I also had a donation on the payment form that was never charged so I don't think they even opened my envelope.
wctriump got one though!!!
https://www.ar-15.co/threads/154117-CMP-Has-A-Limited-Number-of-M1-Carbines?highlight=carbine
What they really ought to do is the lottery online with a reservation number. If you win the lottery then go to the trouble of getting your packet together and print your reservation email. That way they aren't swamped with paperwork.
I love the CMP but they don't seem to be too organized at times.

I have several rifles used by the Turks, and spent some time in Turkey with the USAF. To call the Turk rifles I have "well used" is an understatement. The Turks don't use anything gently, and always thoroughly. They still fly F-4s, for example. They're also not the sort to drop their guns and run; the Turkish conscripts ("Askares") would almost certainly be shot by the NCOs if they did such a thing. I would expect the Turk return M1s to be well used, at best.

Interesting video of the Philippine garands:
The CMP had to pay over $1,000,000 to have the stocks termite treated, and about $1,500,000 to have them cleaned of asbestos residue. Then the CMP had to pay $3,200,000 to ship them back to the US.

That Winchester... :( Commies ruin everything.
Garand's own M1 sells for $250K, on the low end estimate.
Prototype Garand sold above for $150K.
Both were interesting and fun to watch this morning! Makes me wonder who is buying. I have seen much higher lots, but it's interesting to think someone spent this much.
https://imgur.com/NVq9wvj.jpg
Those prices seem reasonable. His personal gun, even at 250K seems like a bargain. Imagine Henry Ford's personal model T or something as iconic.

I honestly wouldn't know how to price it other than look at what buyers with that kind of cash were willing to pay. It's just astonishing to see some of those lots go for as much as a house!!!
The video says the initial sale from Garand's family to Coors was for under asking because they knew Coors had a significant collection and would hang onto it. Now it went to the highest bidder. Hope she found a good home!
I also thought it was interesting the prototype went for above estimate while the Garand M1 was on the low side. Maybe the market valued a unique piece that Garand likely worked on himself more than the presentation M1?
Even the gas traps fetch an interesting premium...

Aesthetically nearly identical to a "standard" M1. You have to really know your M1s to tell the difference. But $50K.
Other M1s in collectible (original) condition were more reasonable. There were a couple Winchesters the avg Joe could have won and they were beautiful!

Common now and multiple manufacturers making complete 6.5 Creedmoor in M1A. Not sure I would convert an M1.
I'm not sure I would even entertain the 6.5 Creedmoor any more. The current trend is moving now to the 6mm Creedmoor.

Recently saw a huge stack of Garands that the Philippine solders were working on. . One soldier was dragging the Garand by the butt end with muzzle getting scratched /beat up while he was apparently using it like a cane. Appeared they weren’t very particular about proper handling since the Garands were leaving their possession.

I don't think the CMP is advertising that specific rifles are Philippine returns. There is speculation on the CMP board that some of the new M1s being sent out are Philippine with a "Y" on the tag, but no confirmation from CMP employees.

I got this one mid August, I have no idea if it one of the Turk or the Phillipine returns, they don't tell you. Others online seem to think July/August is about when they switched over but who knows, the CMP doesn't tell you anything. It was a WW2 era rifle with most of it's finish and other than some grease on the buttstock that as well was in really good shape. I've been told the buttstock is for an early HRA and fairly rare. No “Y” or any other writing on the back of the tag.

Its a Springfield. I like Varget and 4895. I typically do 147 grain or 150 grain bullets depending on what I can find.
NM sights make a big difference for targets. The NM rears are very small for rapid target acquisition or hunting. I have several 595 and 520 rear apertures sitting around. I've put an EER scope on one of my M1s to help with old eyes.
4895 is a very good choice for 150grain bullets.

This thread inspired me to pull my Garand out of the safe this week.
I have a darker stock which is a bit on the beat up side. Lots of dark oil stains and dings. This is a Korean War era Springfield. Would I ruin it if I did some mild restoration work? I don’t want to sand it down like crazy. Just degrease it in hot water, knock the grain back down and restain it. I watched this video series and this guy seemed to know what he was doing: https://youtu.be/VMl2Ik_-NXM
(https://youtu.be/VMl2Ik_-NXM)
Most i would do is steam the dings with a wet cloth and iron. These rifles need the character of dark wood and a few dings.

Or, for not too much money, purchase a full stock set with metal from the CMP. I paid $149 for mine, it fit perfectly and looks good. My M1 is not really a "collectible" as it has an import mark on it, bought it over 30 years ago for $185 plus the stock set some 10 years ago. I tried the Boyd's stock and did not like the over size feeling. Then CMP stock is walnut, the metal was like new, I love it.

I am joining the Garand club!! Last weekend I got married. For a wedding gift, my beautiful bride is getting me an M1 (she knew I would like a gun as a gift, because it's something that will always be useful and not lose value). I gave her various options/ideas, and she wanted to purchase me a Garand. We sent the paperwork in today for a CMP Special .30-06 with new-production wood/barrel. I figure I want this to be a shooter and enjoy the history of the weapon that way, rather then get something of dubious pedigree that will either A) cost $$$$ or B) be very worn out or even C) be so collectible it'd just sit in a safe.
Question: Where's the go-to for good clips? I'm ordering some Prvi Partizani M1 Garand ammo at $0.59/rd (200rds for $117.90 before S&H) from SGAmmo, which should be great for plinking.

I have a number of bandoleers and it isn't exactly quick and easy to pull a loaded clip from them because of the retention flap. Much more useful is a ten-pocket Garand belt like these. A quick un-snap and pull does it. Very handy.

We attempted to deliver your package at 9:53 am on March 16, 2019 in ANNISTON, AL 36207 but could not access the delivery location. We will redeliver on the next business day.
What the hell >: \ CMP South is supposed to be open 8:00am - 3:00pm on Saturday (today, Mar 16). I'm in the same time-zone. CMP isn't open again until Thursday... who knows if they accept mail Mon - Wed, that'd be pretty annoying if the priority mail envelope gets returned to me by the USPS for failure of delivery.
ETA: Yessss delivery accepted yesterday (monday) at noon'ish. Come to me, sweet M-1.....
The GI Garand tools are not needed. Just get a good aluminum cleaning rod and a toothbrush for the bolt face. Enjoy the M1 when you get it.
Sounds good!
Two little gadgets I use when cleaning mine:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJ4NCVZ
https://www.amazon.com/Garand-Receiver-Insert-Safety-Maintenance/dp/B01BFW1XCU
The rod guide is important because you have to clean from the muzzle end, so protecting the muzzle is important.
For quick cleaning I use a bore snake, but occasionally the cleaning rod from the muzzle is needed.
Definitely picking these up, links are much appreciated!

Ah good information. I'm going to try out the cloth bandoleer- understood about the retention issues, but I'm used to that. I'll keep that other belt in mind, though. Thanks!

Anyone here recently ordered a Garand from CMP? Saw pictures of one of the recent ones (most of which have been pretty nice lately) and it looked like someone took a leak on the receiver/rear sight and put it away in that condition many years ago. [blaster]
What grade was it? Havent seen any myself lately but plan on buying another one this summer.

New owner indicated this Garand was a FIELD grade and thought it came from the Phillipines.

4 mil Springfield, 1ME 4TE, USGI wood.
Broke the whole thing down to clean and lube/grease this weekend. The stock has a lot of cosmoline unfortunately, it's going to take a while to get out fully... I couldn't wait that long so I cleaned it up as best I could in a day and took it to the range Sunday.
She shoots nice, sights were pretty much dead on after I reassembled them. I'd like to get out to 100 yards and make sure I'm zeroed and how the groups are (the wood seems loose but I'm no expert). Pics to come, I haven't gotten any good ones yet.

Sorry for the delay. I took some pics but weren't happy how they turned out. Was going to wait until I could take it in the woods to get some natural light, but here are the pics. Are there any areas you'd like to see specifically when I can get better pics?

boxy, thanks for posting those pictures. Always nice to see the stock cartouche if there is one and the manufacturer and Serial number. If you are uncomfortable showing the SN, you can blank out the last couple numbers. These Garands are outstanding weapons and are my absolute favorites of my 70 years farting around with guns. Easy to take down field strip and even detail stripping is easy. [blaster]

I could really use some help from some experienced Garand "hands." I have a new to me CMP Garand. I field-stripped it and purchased a Wolff recoil spring to replace the (broken) one that came with the rifle. I have not been able to reassemble it. I have watched a variety of Youtube videos, including the excellent Brownells videos. I have tried repeatedly, including days and weeks apart, rewatching the videos, etc... and am feeling pretty confident that I am following the steps correctly, but I am unable to reassemble because I can't get the pin to seat fully. It looks like it's about 1/16" off, and none of my manipulations have worked. It was obviously assembled when I received it, so I must be doing something wrong. I have included a link to some pics. If you have any words of wisdom, I will really appreciate it. If you are in the Loveland/FoCo area and are experienced with Garands and would be willing to show me what I'm doing wrong, I"d be happy to bring you a 6-pack of your choice and let you show me the error of my ways. All help really appreciated! Thanks!

dogcaller, You are trying to push the pin through, beginning on the same side as the operating rod handle - Right?
Perhaps it is just the way I am looking at it but can the operating rod catch assembly possibly be just a little bit crooked, blocking the pin to be fully seated.?

Thanks for looking, Bob. I am confident I am starting from the correct side (though I have tried both). Only one side is recessed to allow the enlarged pin head to fit flush. I agree that it seems to be a little crooked, and is not allowing the pin to fully seat. The trick of it is that I have not been able to find any adjustment or manipulation to correct that issue. Is it typically pretty straightforward, or is there usually quite a bit of wrangling to get it to fit?
Thx!
BlasterBob

Sometimes it may take a “ bit of wrangling” to get the pin properly seated especially if the rod catch assy is worn and little bit tilted. Keep at it, it will seat.
BlasterBob
07-13-2019, 10:12
With the pin pushed in as far as it will go, look on the other side and into the channels the pin must pass through and you should be able to see exactly where the pin is hung up. Hope you can decipher what I am suggesting. As you can see, i don’t have a great way with words. [blaster]

OK, for those of you that are not a member of the Garand Collectors Association, join up at:
thegca.org
If you own the mighty M1 you should be a member. If you even think that you want an M1, join up. It will even qualify you with the CMP if you want to order a rifle, ammo or bayonet. The people at the GCA are amazing and true M1 authorities, if there is anything you want or need to know, they have the info.

I’m in my early thirties and while all my friends are all about their AR15s... I love my M1 Garand. The only other gun I like more is probably my M1 Carbine. I have a Springfield M1 Garand from the CMP and a GM Inland M1 Carbine.
BTW does anybody else think an M1 Carbine would be an excellent survival / Bug out SHTF gun? It’s so much lighter and handier than my AR.

I'd take a mini 14 over an m1 carbine or garand for shtf, but I don't find the AR to be heavy or cumbersome

Depends on how much junk you put on your ar15, if you want an ar15 thats about the same weight or lighter than an m1 carbine then built a colt 723 clone especially an early style one with a pencil barrel.
As far as an m1 carbine being a good shtf gun.... The rifle itself is fine i guess but if its a true appocoliptic event then good luck trading for or finding ammo. In my oppinion even 7.62x39 would be much easier to find or trade for than 30 carbine.

The AR is ten time what the m1 carbine is. In a shtf situation 30 carbine will be non existent, 223/556 would be much easier to come by. Just my opinion.

Anyone here received an M1 Garand from CMP lately? Are the Service grades once again available on line? I have learned that they may indicate that they are sold out of a certain grade but in fact they may be working to release some in the very near future. Currently not many Garands being sold by individuals on the CMP forum.
The CMP was closed for a while due to Covid, I think they are running on a very limited operation at the moment so most of their models are currently showing as “sold out”. They have tens of thousands of Garands that they recently imported from the Philippines, once they are back up and running you will see them come back up in stock.

Next week I am off on Wednesday. I would love to get together with some of our enthusiastic M1 shooters. I am sure that some of us (me) can learn a lot from the more experienced among us.

Another M1 rifle, CMP Service Grade, SN is September/October 1955, barrel date 10 - 1955. It shoots perfectly, it is a keeper for sure!
