Anyone done home cameras, such as D-Link, w/ Ethernet over Power adapter (preferably a pass through adapter which has a port for DC plug of cam), run a multi-port adapter from outlet into a switch, which plugs into home router?

Want to get opinions on this sort of setup before I go inventing a square wheel.

Interested in:

1) Did it work? If so, was the setup as described?
2) What sort of configuration issues did you run into?
3) Any thoughts on how to best do this without going a wi-fi route

I've done 2 cameras w/ EoP plugged into home router before, and it worked. I'd just like to cut down on outlet usage and add cameras.

If I could also save home router ports for home server and main computer, that would be ideal.

Are you talking about a powered switch? Or something else when you say multiport adapter?

Powered switches work great for anything PoE. Cameras, phones, some WAPs even run great from them.

Not PoE...

Ethernet over power utilizing power lines in the house. Plug into an outlet w/ an adapter and an adapter on the other end acts like the other end of the line. Essentially piggybacks the copper in the wall and an adapter decrypts it and gives the data to the other end.

Like this:

Basically, I'd have a multi-port adapter coming from a wall outlet (power) | 4 patch cables >>>> 1 switch to converge, and then 1 patch cable from switch out to router.

I'd totally do PoE instead, but that would require running cable, different cameras, etc. I'm trying to avoid that and use existing electrical line copper and cameras on-hand.

Main thing is just I've never had a switch converging my signals in the mix. I dunno how well that might play w/ the adapters.

Ah. Makes sense. I was aware of the single port devices that do this. Didn't know about the 4 port hub. I'm curious to find how it works.
