I've been reading quite a few... "please don't set off your own personal fireworks because of pets and vets". Are these people for real?! Is this what Colorado has come to in 2017? I haven't bought personal fireworks in 20+ years but this just sounds ridiculous. Maybe I'm just insensitive or I grew up in a redneck state.

America’s doctors are warning that the use of sparklers on the Fourth of July is just too darn dangerous for your children.

To avoid the risk of injury, you should give your kids bubbles, glow sticks and pom-poms to play with this Independence Day. Those things are safer and almost just as fun.

I have no words.

My grandmother's dog went nuts when firecrackers/fireworks went off. The noise really pained her or panicked her. We inherited the dog when my grandparents moved into an apartment and on Independence Day and New Year's Eve, we'd put her in the bathroom with the window and door closed to try to muffle the sound for her. It generally worked and we were (and still are) pro-fireworks. However, some idiots lit off firecrackers the weekend AFTER Independence Day after we'd given her a wash and my sister had tied her leash off to the deck railing to make sure she stayed put while she dried. We went off to church and came back to find the dog had jumped off the deck due to the fireworks/firecrackers (they were still setting them off when we got home). You can figure out what happened ... my sister was traumatized since she'd tied the dog off and I got to handle the mess.

My only point in this is that it IS real but a responsible pet owners can generally deal with it. What we couldn't deal with were idiots who decided it wasn't good enough to have fun on the Fourth.

Our parents gave us sparklers and told us to be careful. If we burned ourselves, it was a life lesson to be more careful and fireworks can hurt you.

Today, kids grow up in an unrealistic bubble apart from what the world is really like, hurt themselves, and parents sue everybody.

My sister in law does have a black lab mix that just freaks the hell out when she hears fireworks. The dog won't go outside to do its business and trembles at the sounds. They're playing music in the house to distract the dog.

So I am not going to set off fireworks because I am generically law-abiding and not interested in burning down my neighborhood this year. But I do think society as a whole has lost something now that it is illegal for teens to shoot bottle rockets at one another. Sure, every now and then somebody lost an eye or a finger, but seeing that one-eyed, three fingered freak year in and year out reminded us of the joy there is in being alive.

Also, I gave a sparkler to my son one year when he was five. He played with it for about a minute, said "I'm done with this, Daddy" and then placed it on the hood of my car. In kindergarten, I had to swear to his principal that I had no idea where he picked up all those four letter words.

Back in the 70s my grandfather had a black lab that not only cowered at fireworks...she would hide in a window well if I played outside with toy guns. Not even cap guns. Nothing was done to accommodate the dog. She survived it.

Back in NY as a kid in the 70s my buddy's dad was NYPD and came home with a garbage bag full of fireworks every year (I assume they were "confiscated"). We'd spend the whole day with a foot of 1" rope slowly smoldering, setting off all kinds of cool stuff. And our parents would laugh at us, then say "oh, uh, stop dat ya bastad kids" when we'd start shooting bottle rockets at each other. Good memories.....

Its not just kids who get woken up. Some of us don't get off for holidays and require us to be at work at 5am. This means we go to sleep at 8pm and wake at 3am.
Firing off exploding fireworks at midnight would be the equivalent of someone running a chainsaw in your front yard at 4am to most.

I get the 4th. Light em off!! But not on the 30th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, etc, etc, etc.

Last night I was seriously contemplating escalating a situation when mortars were being launched at 2am.

My personal take. I dont care about fire crackers, street roman candle types/spinners, and the small bottle rockets. They freak my dogs but tough for them. However I don't like in full blown residential areas assholes with the I am assuming commercial grade shooting big air bursters that shake the windows or my drink a tiny bit and are really loud even from the inside. It's not that the noise is annoying, but just too many retards who will end up accidentally shooting them into a neighbors house or something like that. Rural/semi rural property? Go for it. But again fire danger especially after record dry June.... My new neighbor has found a half dozen or so air munitions in his backyard. Not going to be fun when one of them lands in some non grass and sets the fucking place on fire.

So what some of fireworks landed on neighbors' wooden deck or their propane grill? Yeah few landed on their lamborghinis, and few cried like a puss.
Few bottle rockets "almost" hit a pedestrians eyes.
Keyword is "almost."

When my dog hears fireworks, she runs outside to look for downed birds. Ha. She loves it.

It can be annoying when it's late, but it's no biggie. Yes, they wake my kids. Yes, I lose sleep and have to get up early for work. Life goes on. It's the sound of freedom.

Even worse, I read an article that said fireworks were a major cause for pollution, "could" be the cause for illness due to all the heavy metals they put in the air and people should reconsider supporting their use at all. [Puke]

When my dog was younger she would go out on the roof and watch fireworks with me..she loves them...i also banged pots and pans over her head when she was a puppy for hunting..she loves guns, fireworks and america! She takes after her father.

My parents dog however when i was growing up was a sissy. Dog ran away the night of the 4th. Found it a mile from the house on the 7th (grew up in the country) dog slept for 2 full days..guessing it dodged lots of cars and coyotes..

Heard 5 legit gunshots amongst the fireworks last night in town..gotta love that.

It's just an excuse to complain about something. I also think the people that call the police for this are ridiculous. The police are well aware that people are shooting illegal fireworks.

Well said. I permanently left my Facebook Neighborhood Watch page yesterday. Been tons of bitching over every percieved minor transgression but nobody steps up for the real stuff. What finally capped it was the 10 individual posts with tons of comments in each about illigal fireworks; one person even identifying an offenders address (2 doors down from me) and how they were dressed and stating she'd called the police.

I love fireworks but won't spend the money on buying any these days (especially since I'd have to drive to Wyoming to get any good stuff). All I ask is that the shooting them off stops by 11pm and none of the debris gets in my yard or on my cars. I figure that's fair enough.

There is a fire ban in Boulder Co and Gilpin Co.

Had a friend's neighbor lose a house to fireworks, in Lakewood, on Friday morning. Melted the side of the friend's house. Go ask how they feel about fireworks

I love fireworks and grew up shooting them at the lake. We never shot them off in town though. Haven't bought any in years. I'll go to the fireworks shows though.

I love fireworks and spend way too much $ every year. HOWEVER, I don't go to Wyoming and buy the mortars, rockets and other CO banned stuff. Hit up,the local stand here in Westminster off of old wads. Surprisingly, there are some pretty loud and obnoxious "legal" ones. In Westminster we have some pretty awesome fireworks laws. Pretty much if you can buy it at a local stand, you can shoot them off from 12am the 3rd till like 6pm the 5th. Sure, most the area is shooting off some amazing mortars, but I'm just not willing to shell out for the ticket and big fine if caught. Not worth it when the rest of the neighborhood provides for a great show and takes all the risk. We keep a close eye on everything and have hoses and extinguishers at the ready. Have a safe and fun 4th fellas.

We got home from a concert at about 2345 last night. The neighbors on the cul de sac behind us decided at 0000 that it was time to start their illegal fireworks. Yes, they waited until the 5th of July to celebrate. At least they didn't stop until about 0230. I get up at 0530. Fuckers.

We ended up having a relatively quiet evening. The town of Windsor began it's fireworks at 9:00, and ended at 9:25. The neighborhood kids (adults) lit off a couple of things, but they seemed to stop pretty early as well. I sat on the porch with my neighbor drinking bourbon and swapping sea stories until 11:00, and there was nobody out as I stumbled back across the street.

Yes, the sound of freedom blah blah blah. Fine. Personally, if I want to hear something emulating guns, I'll book some time at the range.

I would be happier about it if people setting off fireworks did it during daylight hours and stuck to the kind that remain on the ground. We're not in BFE; I'm in what would likely be considered a suburbanish neighborhood that is just as affected by the drought as the rest of the state. Every fucking year, the neighborhood punk gets his other buddies together and they set off fireworks in the middle of the street, twenty feet from our lawn. And he does this for hours, beginning around the 2nd and continuing through the 6th. Because he has no job and no life outside of doing drugs and selling them, he can't comprehend how this may affect other people that exist outside of his life.

I get that this is a celebration of freedom. But freedom also requires a bit of forethought- the right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins, and all that. Our neighbor is a Khe San vet. He has PTSD. He tries to put on a brave face about the assholes in our neighborhood, but he's fucking haunted by stuff I can't even fathom from the war- and although it's with him every day, it's brought to the forefront by the fireworks. He tries to mitigate the noise as best he can, but when you've got fireworks that blast loud enough to rattle the windows, it's hard to avoid.

I see both sides, and wish that those people that are determined to use their freedoms for setting off fireworks (legal or otherwise) would show a little common decency and consideration. Why the hell would it be a good idea to set off mortars at two in the morning, save to be a complete and utter dick? Set them off in a place where you don't risk setting a fire in your neighbors yard, and not in the middle of the night.

Here is what our 4th looked like, at least at the beginning. We went back to Omaha to see friends and family. I forgot how much fun the 4th of July can be. It is amazing in Nebraska. All night fireworks going off everywhere, the entire skyline is lit up. Then at 2300 (fireworks curfew) it all stopped. People are allowed to celebrate and have fun and then they respect the timeline in place. Had the local PD drive by, stop, get out and chat with us. Offered him some food and drink and he spent a few minutes with us. It is awesome to see and sometimes I really miss that place.

As we do annually, we spent the 5th of July in Woodland Park at the Symphony Above the Clouds. Some fine men and women from Ft Carson come up to shoot cannons during the 1812 Overture, only feet away from the crowds in the thousands (including many vets) and facing in the direction of a neighborhood.

That was followed by even more fireworks. Yards from the forest.

Apparently, if there is anyone in town that doesn't like the loud noise, no one cares because they've been doing this for 37 years.

Actually, I heard that one house was not happy because the early testing of the cannons during the day caused their dog to flee... The show will go on.

I'm of two minds on this:

On the one hand it annoys me that we've become such a nation of pussies that we can't seem to handle fireworks anymore without putting our dogs and vets on freakin' benzodiazepines.
On the other hand we also used to be a nation of polite and decent people that didn't set off fireworks all fucking night when our neighbors had to get up and go to work in the morning.
