Be careful folks!
Due the fire danger, I keep the sheriff's dept scanner running on my phone during the night- I heard this one unfold in real time...

I hope the kid is OK and not permanently disfigured in the face. Regardless of organizational "policies", I will never camp in a tent without appropriate last ditch safety equipment.
I don't understand why firearms are not mentioned when the procedures state "If escape is not possible, try to fight back using any object available". Take that back, I know the answer.
Looks like this dude made it out alright....

We had a particularly stubborn bear trying to get into my bird shed 2 weeks ago. It took me shooting it several times with the bb gun to get it to walk off. Usually they take off as soon as they see me. This guy was NOT afraid. Kinda freaked me out a little. The ones that are not afraid of humans are the ones to look out for, bigtime.
Like .455 said, be careful.

Glad he appears to be doing good.
We have been fortunate the our local bears have tended to stay away from the immediate house area, but do make an almost daily drive-by of the locking trash container and trash drums. One bear even stole our rolling trash container, leaving it in the ravine a few 100 ft away, still locked. One 12 ga single-shot is always available for immediate use, with a full range of rubber buck, rubber baton, 000 buck and Brenneke slugs on the sling bandolier.
My boss always says how black bears are more afraid of you, I told him I don't want to come across the one that's not. I don't hike without carrying my ccw or the 10mm.

Some pretty gnarly pics of the wounds on the news tonight. The kid, the camp's wilderness survival instructor, seems pretty put together. Remember, eventually the Millennials will be replaced with the new up and comers.

A few staples isn't too bad, compared to what it could have been. I don't think he will forget this encounter.
One came by and took one of the hummingbird feeders down. I raised it up so "hopefully" he can't reach it again.
The attack happened at 4:15 a.m. and I heard about it early this morning. It was a couple miles from our home. It is a reminder to always have and use a good flashlight when out at night, to remain aware and to be prepared for an encounter.
We have a serious problem with bears, thanks in part to the initiative adopted in the state constitution that limits bear management by prohibiting hunting in spring, with bait, and with dogs. It was a law promoted by big money, out of state animal rights groups, and supported by our leftist news media. Clueless urbanites who have nothing to risk or lose.
We go to great lengths to prevent bear problems but have used rubber buckshot on four occasions this spring to haze problem bears. I admire bears and I don't want to hurt one, but I sure don't want one pushing it's way into our home to harm us or kill our pets.

Well, shit. I guess I should get some rubber buckshot. I never bought it before.
The BB gun didn't work so well.
Yep, you're going to have to get with the program, GG.
The CPW issued a first box to me several years ago. I've since bought more through Midway.

I find that I'm able to get off one and sometimes two rounds before the bear runs out range. You want to hit them in the hind quarters, and the pellets that hit will drop off right there. Now I'm loading one rubber buckshot, two double ball rounds for extended range, then an OO buck and two magnum slugs in case the bear runs the wrong direction.

The story made international news in the Brit tabloids:

One of my lady friends was awoken last summer by a bear nudging her head through her tent and grunting. She new right away it was a bear. She was camping alone, all her friends give her shit about this, but there was a couple camping a few yards away. They had already been attacked by the bear through their tent, ripping a hole in it, and had spayed it with bear repellent. They had made it to their car and just started driving around the camping area blowing the car horn. Hearing this she made a run for her car, where she just happen to leave her bear spray. She texted me that morning and was very upset. She still says she has PTSD from the event. Here is the story and all her gear that the bear got a hold of it. You can see her, at least her legs, in one of the pictures.

I get the non-lethal preference for aggressive bears on your property, but as a camper, what is the likelihood that CPW would put someone through the legal wringer if one was to do something like, say, dump a full mag of 300BO supers into said aggressive/charging bear?
Will they consider it SD if nobody has been mauled "yet"? I'm curious because I seem to remember someone dropping an aggressive bear a while back and having to then deal with criminal charges, media/SJW attacks, etc.....

Based off of the opinions of several people who guide hunting and fishing trips in Alaska, they actually recommend bear spray over a firearm. Not because of anything to do with not killing the bear but because they say it actually works very well for stopping an aggressive bear.
If I ever find myself in bear country I'll take the spray and use it before I'd try to stop one with a firearm.

Yes, bear spray is a key part of a comprehensive bear deterrent package. When out hiking (or patrolling the property), bear spray is usually on my weak side hip, and carry gun on the strong side (open or concealed depending on hiking venue). Bear spray does not work well in a hazing scenario on your own property as you must get close to use it. Given the choice, I would much prefer to spray a bear than to kill it, but 100% reliance on spray without a lethal force backup is stupid.

I too think bear spray is the safer option. In this kids case he was sleeping on the ground with a few people in the general area. Waking up and shooting the bear probably would have been a bad idea if even an option. I talked to my friend and she was in a tent and could not see the bear. Shooting at the grunting would not have been safe either. We agreed that even if she had a gun she would not have had a safe shot.

Looks like we need more 11 year olds with shotguns (https://www.ar-15.co/threads/163734-Killt-him-a-bar-when-he-was-only-eleven).
It says the bear is believed to be 40 years old....uh I don't think so.

Did the person post about it on the internet, fail to police their brass, or bring it up at the local PETA meeting?
You can count on a thorough investigation, and whether any charges are filed will depend on the totality of the circumstances. If in the case of an aggressive/charging bear, you'd better hope to show at least one of those rounds to enter into the front of the animal and not just in the sides.

Heard about this on my way into work this morning, talk about bad luck... I'd be buying bunches lottery tickets if I was him.
This is one of the reasons I am building a .458 Socom. When camping, this will be what I grab if a bear decides he wants me or my family for lunch.
Well, he seems to place himself in the opportunity for these encounters. I can't imagine that nature has a personal vendetta against him. It's not like the shark broke into his house.

That dude better NEVER take a trip to Australia. LOL

I had the same thought, only I worded it as "This dude sounds fucking awesome!"

Yeah, somebody send him a brochure about diving for abalone off the coast of Australia. He'll probably avoid being attacked a 5th time.

I invited him to my BBQ next weekend. What's the worst that could happen?

I guess it depends on what you're cooking and whether or not it'll be dead before he gets there.

To be fair, the shark attack rate off Kauai isn't very high (although IIRC it IS where Bethany Hamilton lost her arm).

Okay,
Bit by Rattle Snake, Mauled by Bear, Attacked by Shark.
Now he needs an attack from the air for the conclusion.
