View Full Version : Youth 22 ideas
So I want to put together a 22 for my 10 YO son. Problem is he is vertically challenged.
I would prefer a autoloader (I know, I know, start them on a single shot) but am having a hard time finding anything that fits correctly.
The little single shot crickets fit but I think he will out grow it in a year then it is back to the store.
I like the idea of a 10/22 with an adjustable stock but now we are into this for 300 plus tech-sights at some point.
Any other ideas?

ya, get the cricket... Nothing more frustrating for a kid than not being able to succeed because the equipment doesn't fit.
When he outgrows it, sell it and get something else like a 10/22.
BTW, been through this with one kid, going through it with another, and have one that will start in a couple of years. I just kept the cricket and will sell it when my 6 year old out grows it. My oldest, soon to be 15, shoot pistols in USPSA now.

I though Ruger had a compact 10/22, smaller stcok and 16" barrel CZ also has a youth rifle I think it is the 452, it comes in Pink and wood, am not 100% though or what about an AR-7
We found a 10/22 short, but only in pink. Not going to fly with him. Tried the new SR22 (the tactical rev) and it fit well, just a bit heavy and expensive but with the adjustable stock the LOP was correct.

I know you are after an auto loader, but you might consider a Marlin #39 lever action carbine. I have one which my father gave to me when I was about 6. In fact, it was the first rifle I ever shot. Anyway, my oldest daughter is 9 and a little small for her age as well. She shoots the little Marlin pretty well as it is short and doesn't weigh too much. I still shoot it to this day, so unlike a youth rifle, a kid can still use it as they get older. Just my .02...

The Marlin Papoose seems to be a good choice as well, and when he grows out of it, it can serve as a great backpacking rifle!

Having 4 kids I have invested in a couple of single shots.
I have a Chipmunk and a Savage Youth single shot.
The Chipmunk is great for the youngest and the Savage is better for the oldest.
Have a romainian trainer too, once they start to out grow the youth model.
I have about $200 or so in the Chipmunk and Savage.

I don't know if it's still available but I bought my son a Daisy Legacy when he was that age. Single shot-bolt action-but the neat thing was the stock could be extended as needed until it was too short for him.We got a few years out of that rifle.

Along the same lines, Henry has a few great .22 rifles for youth. There have been some really good reviews about Henry on this forum and my Chapter of the Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation just got a free swap on a new Henry youth .22 that got a scratch on the receiver @ the store. Henry didn't even hesitate to swap the guns out for us (of course, different serial numbers so we had to do the whole FFL thing.

You can always paint the stock. then when he outgrows it you can put a different one on
Henry youth lever is about 250 out here at the Walmart on 470 and bowles

Some of their stores did. It's at the discretion of the manager.

I have two sons, 8 and 11, they have a Henry Youth Lever, a Henry Mini Bolt, a Ruger 10/22 with a youth stock, and a Ruger 10/22 with a collapsible AR15 stock. The Mini Bolt is the smallest and lightest, 10/22 with the collapsible stock is the heaviest, it has an aluminum fore-stock. The lever gun is also kind of heavy for a small kid. My 11 year old can shoot any of them easily but the 8 year old has some difficulty with the heavier ones.
I really like the sights on the Mini-bolt, they are fiber optic with the front being yellow and the rear orange. It makes it really easy to explain how to align the sights and very easy for them to see.
The other rifle I considered was the CZ Scout, it comes with a single shot feeder but a 5 round mag can be used too. Also the stock can be replaced to make the LOP longer.
We have decided to go with a 10/22 and a Blackhawk Adjustable stock. Thanks for all the great ideas.

I like that stock, it should work well.
I found a 10/22 for 100, added the stock for 80 more. Also added an extended mag release and a new bolt release.
Next will be a Tech-Sight setup so we can work with peep sights.
Overall pretty happy with it, fits my son well. Heading out to range today.

A Marlin Youth 22 lever action or Henry youth lever action. I have the Marlin and I have fun shooting it.
FWIW I am 5'10'' and 175lbs.
