View Full Version : 6.5 Creedmoor/300 BLK reloading, powder question
Greetings,
I am beginning to reload ammo for 6.5 Creedmoor and 300 BLK.
I am shooting RPR Gen2 24" for 6.5 cr
&
Sig MCX Gen2 16" for 300 BLK
Currently going to reload 147gr ELD-M for 6.5
Planning on using Hogdon H4350
&
110gr V-MAX for super / 208gr ELD for sub 300BLK
Ordered Accurate 1680 for both
I spoke with Colorado Class 3 who suggested I sign up for this forum to seek other reloaders who might have some Hogdon H4350 stockpiled and might be willing to sell some while I wait for my back order to come in.
I understand that I cannot see or post in the trading post section till I am 30 days a member.
Who all here is in Colorado reloading for 6.5 Creedmoor?
What bullet/powder are you using?
Thanks!

H4350 is a very hot commodity right now and has been unavailable for quite some time. I believe it may start to show up soon, but who knows. IMR 4350 or Induron powders could be used if H4350 cannot be found.
For bullets, buy a 100 of several different types the 147 ELDM may or may not shoot. Try 140 hybrids, 142 matchkings, 140 ELDM, 130 AR Hybrid, 140 RDF Nosler, etc. Your rifle will like one better than another.
I would reach out to Fred at Bison Tactical in Boulder, he may have some H4350, if not he will have some powders and bullets for sale.

Thanks for the info!
I have fired 100+ 147gr ELD-M factory ammo and my gun loves it, 140s work very well too.
I have yet to find a 6.5 of any flavor that did not like the Sierra 142. H4350 and H4831SC are the winners.
For the 300 Whisper 1680, N110, H110 and LilGun are good choices.

I gave up on 4350 and now use RL-17. Its been much easier to acquire, and shoots just as accurately. Its more temp sensitive than 4350 however.

Thank you!
IMR 4350 is almost everywhere, I'm very happy with it.

Temp from Ammo ambient/direct sunlight or from barrel temp if rapid firing ?
What is the nominal temperature window ?

More from ambient temp.

Outside accuracy, if you load to max side you "may run the risk" of other issues. Depending what one is shooting it out of.
There's lots of reading material on the web and reloading books to answer most of your questions. What works for one loader doesn't always work for another. AND one's max load should not be taken as gospel for everyone else to try.
I start at mid load data, usually keep it .5gr under max
You will have good luck with your 300 blk loads, I settled on exactly what you specified and they are accurate and reliable.
The 6.5 on the other hand, what a pain in the ass. Not reloading, it almost seems like anything you slap together is sub MOA, but finding components, and then finding more of the same component is starting to get to me. I really hope that some other wonder caliber comes along here soon because it is a crap shoot what you will find in stock anywhere. I went to three different places looking for ELD M today and they were all out. There were some of the 120's and some hunting bullets but anything match is nowhere up north. Also just an FYI, nosler just came out with a low drag bullet (RDF) to compete with the ELD. I have not tried it but the initial reviews are pretty good. Price-wise they are on par with the Sierra and Berger offerings.
With that said, 4831 and 4831SC are great, and I have been very impressed with their performance. Stable and accurate. I would go with the SC, it is a small cut grain version of the same powder and it meters way better. But the regular 4831 has been fantastic in my rifle.
I'm in the process of working up loads with IMR4451 (IMR's temp tolerant version of 4350). It looks pretty good so far. I haven't done any testing at different temperatures yet, but the loads are very consistent with no fliers at any of my ladder testing levels, but I'm running pretty modest speeds with it. I did ladder testing between 40.6 and 41.5. I have a few pounds of H4350; I'll probably do some testing between the two next summer. Unfortunately, I can't find any RL16 to do a three way comparison...hopefully find some soon.
Savage 10FCP-SR 24" (off bags on a bench; my capabilities are limited...still learning)
143eldx, Hornady Brass @ 2677fps with 41.3gr .75MOA 5 shot group; the Hornady Precision Hunter 143eldx is advertised at 2700fps, which was my goal.
140rdf, Hornady Brass @ 2665fps with 41.1gr .8MOA 5 shot group; the Hornady Match 140eld is advertised at 2710, which was my goal.
I didn't have access to the chronograph when I was doing my ladder testing so I decided on the winner for each load prior to knowing the speeds.

Thank you!
i run H110 for 300wtf/blk. Smidgeon of dirtyness, but I can deal.
Anyone running the Rainier 180gr wedge for 300AAC?

This is my 3rd workup, 50 yards. Sig MCX Virtus 9” 300AAC. Honing the workup from the bottom
Left group later this week. Less than 2 MOA would be fine for a 0.09 projectile. I’ve seen claims of sub MOA.
I have not shot it from a 16” 300AAC barrel yet.
* this is with the HP version which apparently is not as reliable as the round nose flat tip

I tried 100 of them myself a while back. I was hoping for a cheaper way to shoot full auto.

HP or RNFT?
They are sending me some RNFT samples, I bought 1k HP. If they work gonna get a buttload more. Grouping well @ ~ 1040 fps

Flat point. Played a little bit with OAL and still was so-so.
Eggleston coated bullets worked perfect, cheaper, local, easier to keep subsonic and mostly because chicks dig pink and purple bullets.

Powder coated ? Barrel fouling issues ?
Here’s the most recent load dev, it’s was below freezing which dropped overall FPS on the A1680, but I confirmed the node, and also moved seating depth up from 1.950 to around 2.000 and seemed to get a possible improvement. Might go tomorrow to do round 5zhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171111/56af7004eb841fb8e3e32d7f5e4856d8.jpg

Here is a channel I just stood up, covers to date the 300AAC 180gr, I have the 208 and 220 gr subs going very well but they are triple the cost per shot.

I settled on 203gr powder coated bullets for subsonic 300Blk (Palmetto Projectiles). They have good accuracy at 50 yards (1-2") and cost per round is $0.18 less my time and tooling.
Over 1k in one barrel and so far my suppressor has not gained weight or shown build up with a bore scope. Once I'm through my current lot, I'll probably try Eggleston as I have had some sizing inconsistencies with the Palmetto bullets.
So here is some 360/VR footage of the Rainier 180gr 'Wedge' HP working pretty well.

Agree. I have been using H4831SC and holding my one jug of H4350 in reserve just in case...have not needed it yet. Used LilGun for 300BO...don't leave it in a plastic powder hopper for more than a day or two, or you can have a sticky mess.
