View Full Version : Everything RC Thread
So a few of us have been talking RC (Remote Controlled) vehicles for the last couple days on the PWT thread and it was suggested that's we make a thread and I've to decided to make that pipe dream a reality [Coffee]
I've been flying RC Planes since I was about 6 off and on with my grandfather. Before he passed I was told to come pickup my Sh*t (94 year old Texan telling me to clean out his garage). Ever since he passed for about a year now I've been fixing and repairing his fleet and mine. Got 5 planes RtF and working on the 6th when I find the motivation.
Currently flight ready is:
J3 running a .25 efite
large superfly using a 450 motor
smaller Superfly using a .10 motor that I'm itching to fly. (Power plant is designed for 7-10lb planes and this weighs in at 14.7 oz.
Superbee 3 ch to train my buddies kids on (krusty the blow theme was inspired by my grandfathers color scheme).
As far as projects go I have about 10-12 airframes that need to be repaired / built. I fly Wet and Electric btw so if anyone needs any nitro motors hit me up.
(The wall o fun)
http://imageshack.com/a/img924/9883/vBfHjj.jpg
Aside from planes I've flown Helis (not that good) and quadcopters (which I love). I've done nitro cars, trucks and electric cars and rock crawlers and rock racers.
So who else is into RC and wants to gab shop?
Btw anyone here get their sUAS (commercial remote / drone pilot cert) certification yet (that already doesn't have a part 61)?
Running a 680mm carbon fiber folding airframe
Pixraptor (pixhawk clone) with GPS
380kv sunnysky motors
15x5.5 folding props
30 or 40amp ESCs (dont remember)
6s (22v) 5000mah battery
Power folding landing gear (I have a separate ESC for the gear)
Taranis radio
I haven't got around to getting a gimbal, so for now, I just have a borrowed Mobius camera zip strapped to the top.
It will "bounce" a 10lb barbell around the driveway (getting about a foot off the ground at a time), I have no doubt it will fly around with 9lbs (but probably not for long). Dry hover is 34 mins until low batt warning.
71369
I want to build a big flying wing (one of these: https://www.fpvmodel.com/latest-version-skywalker-black-x8-flying-wing_g632.html ), but life gets in the way. The wife seems to complain less when I build guns.
Same here. Been flying off and on as long as I could remember. My dad bought me out of all my RC stuff when I migrated to Colorado.
He does however have way more than he needs and has been handing down small electrics the last couple years. All I have now is a superbly X glider type and he just gave me a micro geebee I'm excited to fly ! I need to get new batts for most of my stuff.
I had some stadium trucks with my kid back in the day. They were a blast. My favorite part was custom painting the bodies. I'll have to see if I can dig up pictures.
I wouldn't mind a drone some day. Just for stupid stuff.
I've got my sUAS but already had the airman cert. That was super easy.

I've got a bunch of old electric RC planes. When last I flew them, they used Nicad or NiMh battery packs, and used 72mhz radios.
I'd like to upgrade the battery packs to lithium. I'm sure my old nicad/nihm cells are bad after many years of sitting. I'd think lithium would get me longer flight time, as well as less weight. But are people still flying the old 72mhz radios?
Looking at my old planes on the wall, I realized I might need to make some changes if the lithium batteries are much lighter to keep the center of gravity correct.
Still have my first RC plane, a Great Planes PT-Electric. It's been crashed once, upgraded the motor, added steerable nosewheel, and built a new wing with ailerons. Would love to get it back in the air. Back in the day, it was about 5 minutes flight time max on the largest battery I had.

That's a BEAST!! What's your overall plan for it just imaging or agricultural spraying?? Trust me I know about life I have a giant J3 that need to get back in the air but it's not in the budget.

I've always wanted to Fly a Superbee, in the sims it was always a great flyer.

Yea I just took that course to supplement my studies. I'm on charting and airspace classification now but I've done the operations and UAV side just need to cover the basic Aeronautical knowledge test.

I've always liked Axial, I've had 2 and never had any issues. I'd say whatever your looking at check the availability of aluminum after market parts. I'd say $450-500 for a decent RTR (Ready to Run). If you go kit it's will be double but you'll have better TXRX most of the time. The biggest killer is all the stuff you have to buy to start like charger, balancer, TX/RX (if you don't go RTR), Servos, esc and kit.

Man let's get together sometime and I'll let you fly my large super fly. Brushless motor and lipos are night and day differences compared to brushed and Nimh

I'm going to be rebuilding a DJI Phantom Pro 3 in the next week so I'll snap some pics. Owner took it down and it needed a new shell and the fumble motor sounded like crap but I fixed that and now just waiting on parts. I think DJI software and overall user friendliness is bar none but I was really surprised when I open the P3P up and saw that the only structure was the shell itself. A little wrinkle in the plastic offset the motor too much so bam have to replace the whole shell. Oh did I mention this will be the second time I've rebuilt this because my dumbass added loctite and evidently over torqued (I'm still claiming bs) and cracked the new shell in every screw location, the thing when I started taking it apart literally crumbled. Oh well live and Learn, I'll rebuild it then do a test flight on it to make sure everything's ok (and check it out [Coffee])

I did look at a bunch of stuff online today, and there's a lot out there for sure. Can my heli control run other RC, or is it specific to the product? Yeah, I'm real green when it comes to this stuff...and I have no idea what TXRX means.....transmit/receive?
Thanks, Mazin.
TX transmitter RX receiver. Your heli control could do a quad or fixed wing most likely (have to know the model to give a good answer but it would not be a controller to use for a car or truck. On the plus side the spectrum Dx 3&4 are pretty cheap or lets meet up and I'll give you the stock one I pulled out of the Wraith. [Beer]

The control is "Silverlit" with no discernable model # on it. Honestly it looks like basic POS when viewing it this morning....been a while sitting in a box with a busted heli.
I saw quite a bit of difference in detail and parts complexity while looking at kits yesterday. And not very much mention of controllers or if they come with the kit when you buy it.

Never started into RC craft but was always interested since going with my grandfather to watch others fly them. Right now it's just another expensive hobby my wife would be upset over, but...
Since seeing a video here several years back, this is the bird I'd love to buy/fly:
http://www.trendtimes.com/surcfijetaiw.html
Wingspan: 29.5"
Overall length: 47.5"
Height: 11"

Might be a older model, is it running the 72mhz freq? When you look at Kits bud that's just the bare parts for the vehicle there's no electronics or TX/RC a included usually.

That's a Cool p51 and I bet it's nice and light too. If you do it let us know how it com s out. I've been siting on a topflite p51 kit for years and have everything to do it except wheel retracts which are about $280, maybe next year it will get built.

2006 on the back of it, but bought in '12 or '13?....no info inside the battery cover either.

No real plan for it. I wanted something just to play around with, and wife told me I couldnt BUY one. I bought parts... haha
I did go a bit overkill on it though.
Dude that's a beast for sure, hookup a tank and sprayer and make spring time fun to get the lawn in order [Coffee]
looked up the parts to fix the AX10 and all aluminum shafts with the hubs for about $30-35 and a new most mount kit is $6 but the thing that sucks is I don't remember the Lexmark bodies costing $50-$100.

You could defiantly used it for another heli or aircraft and probably quad. It's running a 2.4ghz freq which is better than the old 72's, you are no longer segregated to a specific channel with the 2.4 ghz opposed to the 72

I've never been into anything other than cheap electric RC cars as a kid (nicest one I owned was a 4 wheel drive Radio Shack). Now that my boys are getting older, I'd love to get into either flying or 4x4's again. Not sure I can afford any new hobbies, but it would certainly be easier to justify to the wife if it were "for the children" lol.
LMAO it's for da kids!!!
I wish I could use that one

I have multiple electric planes, several rock crawlers, a nitro air boat, a snow cat, and a small multi-rotor copter.
I was big into racing on-road several years ago. Mostly touring cars and pan cars.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I've flown on and off since the late '70's. Back then, servos came right or left rotation, no such thing as servo reversing.
I have a half dozen electrics hanging on the wall, but my favorites are sailplanes. The last time I was semi-serious about flying I got into hand launched sailplanes. Picture lots of carbon fiber composites in extremely sleek designs. You launch them from the wing tip like a discus. It's very satisfying to catch a thermal, look up at your plane that's about to speck out and know you THREW it up there.
Haven't flown in a few years, but now that the kids are getting close to the right age I'm sure I'll pick it up again. I just bought my daughter her first balsa kit. It's a hand launch free flight glider. Not complicated, I'm just hoping to get the smell of balsa dust and glue in her nose.

I grew up building and racing on and off-road cars/trucks, nitro and electric. I raced pan cars for a few seasons and had a blast. Then I got into flight. Started with a foam electric plane and a fixed pitch heli which led me to variable pitch helis. That was a huge challenge and a lot of fun though it tends to take over other hobbies because there's so much rebuilding and tuning when you goof and ram it into the ground.
Right now I only own a multi-rotor (Yuneec Typhoon H Pro) which I use sporadically for side jobs (real estate and construction). I'm developing a website now and hope to do more of that. If time/money was more available I could see getting back into all sorts of R/C. It's a great hobby!

I want another taylorcraft bad, they are great flying planes and you weren't joking that's a steal and half......Damn!!!!
How are you set on gunsmithing tools and 22 ammo [ROFL1]
thought about building a small backyard tract or air strip. Probably wont do an air field since the wind never stops here.
I do like the quads and wouldn't mind picking one up, I just don't like the short flying time with them. They are amazing for photography though.

I'm set on tools and ammo, thanks for the offer.
If I was willing to ship it it would sell pretty easily but this thing is big. It does have the split wing which is nice, they made a similar taylorcraft without the split wing and this is the one to have.

Yeah, it's tough to get a long flight-time with quads. My Typhoon H won't get 20 mins and batts are nearly $100 a piece. Like you said though, amazing photography platform.... SUPER stable and the gimble is rock solid.
Just got done rebuilding a Phantom 3 Pro......took about 3 days and most of it was getting the firmware updated what a PIA until you get to 3.20 then you can update the firmware automatically through the go app. So going to try to pull a test flight today so we will seee how she's running.

Good luck...like to hear how it went.
So I got 7 test flights in and other than the low radio signal (DJI latest firmaware complaint) it flies like a champ. It's weird after flying all these years how hard it is to look through the camera instead of the aircraft. I took it to only 100' because I'm so close to a class d airspace I didn't want to send it up any farther. So anyone needing Phantom 3 repair hit me up [Beer]

I've got probably well over 100 RC's of various shapes and sizes. Just purchased a new Phantom 4 pro+ the other day for work and it's amazing.
As you can tell from the screen name crawlers are my area of expertise. I started and own www.rccrawler.com I also used to own the USRCCA which is the sanctioning body for competition RC rock crawling. I held numerous events all over the country for competition crawling for years.
I also own www.rcshortcourse.com and www.rclargescale.com

What would you suggest for me for a starting crawler? I wouldn't mind a scale crawler for looks and fun, but I'm also not apposed to a built rig.

You can't go wrong with anything made by Axial, they really are the leader in the crawling world plus there are tons of upgrades. I haven't yet gotten my hands on the new crawler from Traxxas, but it looks super cool and has a ton of features I've wanted for years.

***THREAD REVIVAL WARNING***
I don't normally get too carried away with Black Friday, but....
I've wanted a drone for as long as I can remember...since they became "mainstream", I guess. Yesterday I chose a gun to sacrifice to fund a GoPro Karma w/Hero 6. I read/watched everything I could about the drones in that class and narrowed it to the Karma and the Mavic. Karma won just because it seems to be a better value and I really like the idea of the Karma Grip.
So if anyone's looking for a near-mint S&W 4505 it's on GunBroker right now.
[Coffee]
Should have it later in the week and I figure I'll have at least one crash under my belt in less than 12 hours after getting it.
Now I have to figure out which gun to sacrifice for spare parts.

I'm really lucky cuz all my hobbies and addictions...guns, Harleys and now this...are really inexpensive.
Oh, well. I can retire when I die.
I have a friend with a gas powered rc car that he wants to give me. I might need help repairing it.
Depends on make and stiff but I'm always willing to help.
