Wednesday morning my next door neighbor had a heart attack and died while playing golf.

He was a good man, mid-60's, recently retired, fit, trim, athletic, worked out regularly.

It's always unfortunate, someone who's a great person passes while other people seem to elude karma and Darwin.

He will be missed.

That is horrible.
It sounds like he had an active life by playing golf. I personally cannot even walk the entire 18 right now. (working on walking to practice range fairly soon). This is very reason we should check our condition healthy or not.

Besides an annual or semi-annual check up.
Everyone should make sure their will, power of attorney, living will (If applicable), beneficary deed and POD, Payable on Death are up to date.

Unexpected death (in some cases) isn't near the horror show that follows, if the one of the family beleives they are the one who should get the biggest slice of the pie.

Excellent advice. My folks recently did this and sent me copies of everything as the executor. It's good to have these conversations before the inevitable comes. Even stuff like, "I'm brain dead, will you pull the plug if I want you to?" and "I want to be cremated (or buried) are we clear on that?"

Having all of this spelled out in writing will make things much easier on loved ones when you go.

My dad told me that he wants everyone at his funeral to be wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, and that we have a huge BBQ and party in his honor. Gotta love the Irish.

Took care of everything including POD and paid cremation the year I retired. My son asked what kind of service I wanted and I told him to have an
"In Memory of Bash" and call it good haha

Have you done the same?

Death comes for everyone. Its not just out of shape, unhealthy looking people that die. It would be nice if you kept your self in good shape, ate right, lived right you could count on having a long life.
I finally bought an AED, I hope that if a cardiac event happens to anyone in my famiy, myself or any of our neighbors it will do what it is designed to do.

And everyone regardless of how old you are, how much stuff you Dont have, needs a will, and end of life documents. It is the right thing to do, its the adult thing to do and its the loving thing to do for your family who will have enough to deal with.

Actually you can get brand new AEDs from about $1100. Demo models and recertified models from about $700. They are getting cheaper. I wish they were cheaper too. They are just another piece of insurance. We buy insurance for everything else, why not for a cardiac event? If you used it 1 time it would be worth a million dollars if it saved a life.

I bought a Zoll AED plus. It is portable, proven, has a tough case, cheap batteries, etc. The company I bought from also had a coupon for $250 and a free cabinet. I think most aeds have map pricing so you have to ask for a discount. I did and it saved me money.

Paid around $1100 for mine, wife's family has a history. I feel the same way, cheap insurance. I also wouldn't hesitate to drop that on a fine firearm, why wouldn't I do the same for another lifesaving tool?

Indeed. Many (most?) cannot swing a $1,100 firearm right now either, however. Much less three or four AED's. (One for house, one for each vehicle). Realistically they are prohibitively expensive for them to be accessible to even a fraction of a fraction of the general population. It would be nice if you keeled over at the wheel for instance, that there was a 10% chance an immediate passerby would have one.

What's your "this is not legal advice" opinion on the potential and reality of a lawsuit against a person for using an AED on someone, be they a stranger or a friend?

Does CO law protect a person for attempting to be a Good Samaritan and providing such level of first aid?

ETA: This question also applies to tourniquets, nasopharyngeal airways, and needle chest decompression.

Certainly would like to see them cheaper, that's for sure. Spent the $1100 because I could, but if I could have gotten three for that same price (house, each vehicle) I sure would have. As it is, it's at home, or if I remember, camping trips or trips where both of us are together.
