View Full Version : If you can't take the heat, stay outta the shop.

I've had both overhead doors (at opposite ends of the shop) open since 0500 this morning. By 1000 I'd had enough. Can't take the heat like I used to. It feels hotter than 99° inside.
How in the hell did people survive before AC and iced tea? Or cold beer?

I don't think it hit 80 here today. I bet you're sending that our way.

It's supposed to be between 102 and 110 all week in this valley. Hot and dry. We haven't seen rain in at least a couple of months. Typical summer.
ETA: Luckily it's not humid.

Yeah. It's 0500 now and it's about 60°. Mornings are nice...for a short time.
Two words: swamp cooler.
Working in our shop became a lot more pleasant when I ducted the cooled air into the garage.
We've been in Sedona for a few days where the monsoonal rains have cooled temps, should hit 83 today.

Funny you mentioned that. I was just scouring Craigslist for one.
Years ago I got rid of my swamp cooler when we got central air. Wish I would have kept it and hooked it up for the garage.

You can have my rooftop one if you'll block the opening !!!

Donated my window unit evaporative cooler to Habitat for Humanity when we moved into a house with central A/C.
If you have one of their centers out there in the boonies, that might be a good source to check.

Good idea. I'll check there and the local thrift stores. But we'll probably be over the worst of summer by the time I find one. But I'll be ready for next year.
Make sure to show us the temperature in the shop this winter too. I'm guessing it won't be anywhere near 99 degrees.

I'm in a mobile home park-nobody would even notice that [ROFL2]
Nice cool mountain side in nw Colo Springs. 75 yesterday. I don't want any part of 100 degrees. Idaho or Phoenix are not for me.

What gets me is they sell Port-A-Cool swamp coolers at Tractor supply here in East Texas...
I guess it could improve a shop or barn... but for example- right now the dew point is 70 degrees.. that means the very best swamp cooler could get around 80 degrees with ~95% relative humidity output
I suppose that's better than 93.5 degrees at 44% humidity reported outside right now, but it's not a big improvement- and for a cooler big enough they want $2500 for it! [hahhah-no]

Humidity here is only about 11% today. Pretty typical for this time of year...very hot and dry. Winter is a different story.
I picked up one of these...should be here and in service on Thursday. Says it's good for 1600 sq ft and my shop is just under 900 (but with 12' walls).

12' Walls
That should be enough insulation to keep it cool!

I believe the best way to size them is to figure out cubic feet of the space, and divide by 2... and get a cooler that does that figure in CFM... 900*12/2=5400
That cooler is 5300 CFM, so I think you're good- As dry as Idaho is, that should do nicely... altitude helps a little, too... high and dry is best for swamp cooler performance

Well, it works. It's not AC but I knew that. It dropped the temp from 98° to 88° in about an hour and then held steady. OAT is about 101° at the house.
Best part is, it moves A LOT of slightly cooler air thruout the shop. It has powered, swinging louvers that blow the air from side to side so there's always a nice, cool breeze inside somewhere.
It's still hot inside, but it's much better than it was.

Leave it on, the mass of the floor and walls is still cooling.
They are cheap to operate... the longer you run it, the cooler it will get (to a point)
They are not the kind of cooler that makes big changes quickly...
Leave it on overnight and it will be much better in the morning

Turbo mode!
Last time I had a swamp cooler, I ran it 24/7... took 3-4 days to reach optimal temp in Phoenix valley

I'll give it a try leaving it on tonight.
