Going to see if I can call in a coyote tomorrow. Will be hunting in the foothills. Don't have access to private land out east like some. So I'm thinking of driving to national forest just up in the foothills and then hiking back east. Hope I can stay within a few miles of houses and ranches that give coyotes a free lunch in the way of garbage and pets.
If I get lucky will be posting some pics. Also first trip out for the new bolt action 223. Bought one of those cheep Savage....errrrr Stevens 200. Only just sighted it in, but those aren't just rumors about them being tack drivers. Could shoot three shot groups under an inch with 36 GR Varmint Grenades, 40 gr vmax, 50 gr blizkings, 55gr rem hp bulk, and 60 grain v max. Really suprised it shot the light weights so well being a 1/9 twist. The 60 grain v-max will be the load tomorrow.

So, you'll have to let us know how you do out there.

It was a lot of fun, but didn't call in a single dog. Won't be going back to that area. Can't get close to any of the ranches unless you want to hike many of miles down hill. Too far back into National Forest where we were and there wasn't much sign of life.

Next weekend new location. Might try the grasslands to the south. Haven't been there before.

That's too bad.

The coyotes in CO have been getting more aggresive and bold. Unless you keep fear of people in them they will continue to get bolder and bolder and you'll continue to hear about more attacks against people and pets.

Too bad more home and land owners won't work in a coop with hunters to help resolve the problem.

I wouldn't mind going for a hike with one of you experienced guys (and bringing my rifle along) sometime.

That reminds me, I need to get a small game license for that sort of hunting right?

Mostly, yes.

If you are out big game hunting and you have an un-filled big game tag you can kill a coyote without a small game or furbearer license. As I understand it, you don't require a license to hunt coyotes on private land, but that's one you really need to check out. I always buy a small game/fishing combo every year so I'll always be prepared.

I live on 40 acres east of Pueblo. Coyotes are sometimes a problem out here. My understanding is a landowner/farmer/rancher can shoot them at any time (without needing a small game license) if they are harassing livestock. The wife's chickens count as livestock. I got a few of them soon after she got the chickens. They were so stinkin' bold at first I could hardly believe it. Three of the five I shot were at less than 40 yards. Got em' with 000 buck. They're skittish now but still come around. My dog ran three of them off the other night.
