Other than archery in high school gym class and randomly shooting a friend or twos bows I have little knowledge or experience.. looking to learn a bit and try it out. What are the best local shops/classes/ranges in the North/Northwest metro area?

Glen at Empty Quiver is one of the nicest people you could meet. If you go before noon on a weekday, $5 will get you a recurve bow, four arrows, a target, and you can shoot as long as you like. I recommend you stop in and give it a try. I doubt you can find a better deal to just get some string time in. They offer private and class instruction and can give you ideas on gear you might try, but for the most part it is all about putting arrows down range.

wheretoshoot.org in addition to rifle/pistol/shotgun ranges also lists archery.

Archery in the wild off 119.

Archery in the wild is probably the best place local to Boulder, and JAX is also pretty good depending on who is working that day. They have both have a good selection and will let you try before you buy at their range.

Bow technology has plateaued over the last 5 years and advancements are very minimal. They are trying like hell to sell bows that have a 3 FPS faster IBO and maybe that 1% difference is worth $300 - 500 additional to upgrade to some people, but for the average shooter any bow made in the last 3 years will perform exactly the same. The shooter is by far the greatest factor on a bow as long as it is properly tuned. Like cstone said, it is all about getting a bow that is comfortable for you and putting as many arrows down range as you can.

Thanks! I drive by Archery in the Wild fairly frequently so I'll have to stop in.

Any archery shops in the Parker area?

None that are decent.

Ive tried most of the southern metro archery ranges/ stores and have been told a lot of miss-info and had horrible customer service.

I've had my best experience at No limits Archery and it the only place i take my bow to get tuned now.

I haven't been there in a couple of years but you could try Full Rut Archery in Elizabeth.

Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear is my first choice, No Limits is my second. Quickdraw just wants to sell you a bow, even if you have a new bow.

So I've been to Archery in the Wild a few times and I think I might be hooked. Good guys that take the time to help you out and as far as I can tell I'm not being fed a bunch of bullshit or being pushed to buy anything. First time I went I just rented a bow and they came out and taught me all the proper form/anchoring/release stuff and I was off and running.

Think I'll be getting a Hoyt Defiant soon.
