i have been toying with the though of a 7.62x39 upper for hunting, because it would be cheaper then buying a new deer rifle. I have met a few guy while out hunting running them. but did not stick around long to get any info. can I use my 5.56 lower with no mods? will it bolt right up? who's a good company that makes them? What kind of range am I look at too. ammo too?

Thanks

AR-15 lower will work just fine, even m16 mags will work, though you can only load like 7 rounds in them before it gets ugly. Yes the upper will bolt to the lower. ummm as for company DPMS makes a whole rifle, not sure if they only sell the upper.

For less than the cost of a complete upper,($500) plus C-products($30) mags you can buy a new Winny or Marlin 30 ($379-399) http://www.academysports.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/hunting/firearms/rifles_centerfire-30.
Ballistics are almost identical and ammo is actually cheaper for sp hunting ammo in the 30-30

These can be found locally used in the $250-300 range in excellent condition as well. Because of it's short range they are just not popular in Colorado for hunting.

There are 2 in the Thrifty Nickel "Springs" at $350 which is too expensive.

My brother picked up a new Marlin 308 Marlin Express which uses the Marlin Express 308 ammo, not NATO 7.62 or Rem 308.
Ballistics are closer to the 308 Remington, but ammo is more expensive.
He uses it for hogs and deer in Texas...just loves it!
They also make a .338 cal version that has idenical ballastics and energy as the 30-06 w/ a 180 grain bullet

Just some food for thought................
