Okay guys,

Haiku (俳句 (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E4%BF%B3%E5%8F%A5), haikai verse? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Installing_Japanese_character_sets)) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8a/Loudspeaker.svg/11px-Loudspeaker.svg.png (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haiku.ogg) listen (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/71/Haiku.ogg) (help (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_help)·info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haiku.ogg)), plural haiku, is a form of Japanese poetry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_poetry), consisting of 17 moras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mora_%28linguistics%29) (or on (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onji)), in three metrical phrases of 5, 7, and 5 moras respectively.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku#cite_note-0) Haiku typically contain a kigo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo), or seasonal reference, and a kireji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kireji) or verbal caesura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesura). In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line, while haiku in English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku_in_English) usually appear in three lines, to parallel the three metrical phrases of Japanese haiku.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku#cite_note-1) Previously called hokku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokku), haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaoka_Shiki) at the end of the 19th century.

I was always under the impression that "mora" can be used the same way as syllables. So the first line has 5 syllables, the next has 7, then 5 again. Am I wrong here?

Nice!

I knew it was 5, 7 and 5 "syllables" but the seasonal reference is new to me.

Still funny.

Benefit of doubt
I give you. Please don't screw us.
Leave our guns alone..

Set the stage you will
My generation's Jim carter
For next Ron Reagan...

Hows that? Did I get the structure right? Cut me a little slack guys, I'm a plumber, not an english professor...[Tooth]

Seriously, I want to give Obama the benefit of the doubt. Thats proving damn near impossible. Maybe he'll be the catalyst required to bring forth another Ronald Reagan. Better yet, a Libertarian. We can hope, right?
