View Full Version : When have you come the closest to shooting someone?

When have you come the closest to shooting anyone? This can be both for defense stories, or accidental discharge or whatever. All Condition Red (where you have drawn your gun) stories are welcome.

Multiple times in Iraq, once while working a criminal case. All very sureal experiences. Training is what get's you through them. The act of intentionally pointing a loaded gun at someone will affect you for life. I'm happy to say I have not had to actually pull the trigger.

Thanks for sharing SAFriday. Are you unable to share more specifics though?

Unless people aren't allowed to discuss specifics, this thread will only be cool if you guys are much more specific in your stories. I got this idea from my favorite board (www.silencertalk.com (http://www.silencertalk.com)) and on that thread some guy had a story of shooting TWO guys in his front yard with a 20 gauge shotgun. They immediately hit the ground and didn't get up, and he thought he killed them.[Help]

It was my very first day on patrol. First call of the day, before we (my training officer and I) even got the car loaded up.

Suicidal male. After a fight with his girlfriend, decided he wanted to die. Except, apparently he didn't have the stones to do it himself. So, he threatened her and she, naturally, called the cops.

We arrived at his house at about 0720 and were taking cover behind a car parked in front of the place. He was standing in a doorway with only the left half of his body visible. There was about 15 yards between him and us. His right side was hidden behind the wall he was leaning against. While we talked to him he occasionally moved a shotgun into view from where it was hidden on his right side that we couldn't see. Initially he just kept it pointed at the ground. He started getting a little agitated and was getting more agressive in moving the muzzle of the gun in our direction.

My FTO carried a Ruger P90. At one point I wondered why we hadn't shot the guy. I looked at my partner and noticed the hammer on his gun was about half way back, wavering slightly back and forth as he put pressure on the trigger. I had a S&W 645 and and started to pull the trigger as the guy lifted the muzzle towards us. If I'd had something like a Glock or a 1911, I would've shot him. But instead of firing he tossed the gun out the door. He came really close to getting shot...maybe getting killed.

That was only the first time. In 15 years, there were lots of times after that.

That same day...my first day on patrol, I had to perform CPR on a on a 35 year old guy during the 20 min ambulance ride to St Anthony's (volunteer fire department and not enough personnel available to answer the call). He had a heart attack at work. Then had to tell his wife and kids at the hospital he died. After that call, I went to an accident on I-70. Mom & 2 kids in a mini-van got side-swiped by a semi that lost it's brakes coming down hill. The mini-van rolled a couple of times. We were right under the overpass where this happened on our way to get lunch and start some reports. I got to hold mom as she held her 1 and 3 year daughters as they both died in her arms before rescue even got there.

When our 10 hour shift finally ended after almost 15 hours I really wondered if I'd made the right career decision.

Man that's some heavy stuff. I was just going to say that must have been one hell of a first day.

I was walking with the my lady, cutting through an ally by safeway by the CU football field and a guy came walking up with a 3' piece of pipe and was waving it around and comeing at us and started asking if i know where some dude lived, While I was pushing my Wife away and moving further away I had my holster unsanpped and had on the grip ready to draw. then he asked for the time and I told him I don't have a watch on and to leave me alone. Then he left, Thats the only time I had a hand on my pistol ready to use it, it was a scarry time, but I told myself its me or him

Shooting my AR at the south site about 10 years ago. I was back about 200 yards, and the place was deserted. I had a spotter placed about 50 yards forward and about 45° off to one side.

I had what I thought was a clear view of the entire field up to the target. I had fired about 3 shots and had the slack up on the trigger for number 4. The shot was milliseconds from breaking. My spotter started shouting "CEASE FIRE" in a somewhat panicked tone of voice. I relaxed my trigger finger just as a father and son motored through my line of fire on a small motorcycle. Had my spotter not warned me, I'd have hit one of them almost for certain.

It turns out there is a very shallow depression in that field that is just capable of hiding a rider. We walked through it, but didn't notice it when we were hanging the target. It was completely invisible from the shooting position.

That situation scared me so badly I didn't fire another shot for over a year. I had nightmares about killing one of those people for months after.

Every time I think about that day, I thank God I didn't kill anyone.

As you can imagine, I'm even more careful now, and I was almost paranoid careful before that incident. You just can't be too cautious.

I don't have anything....just good memories of 2 bulls taken with a .50 cal muzzleloader, hundreds, if not thousands of p-dogs taken with anything from a .22 to a .243.
Hopefully I won't have a story, but i will be ready just in case.

I don't really have a story either. Although Daniel's story reminded me of something that happened just the other day. I had just brought home that .22 rifle my grandpa gave me, and got it out of my trunk to take it inside. So here I am walking through my parking lot with a bare rifle in my hand and these two shady dudes are standing by one of my neighbor's doors, leaning against the rail smoking. He looks at me and yells to me, "Hey man, do you know an Art around here?" Usually I'm a pretty talkative guy, but I just looked at him and said "Nope." I thought it was funny that I was open carrying a rifle at the time, but I guess I must not have looked very threatening with it.

Also, the other night I thought I heard an unusual noise shortly after I went to bed. I had forgotten that I had started my washer a few minutes before. I got my gun out of the safe, and was walking down the hall toward my daughter's room, with the gun pointed at the floor. The washer was right between cycles (you know when it completely stops and sits for a minute?) and right as I walked next to it, it kicked on and scared the crap out of me. I immediately thought how I was glad I was holding the gun with my finger down the slide like I was supposed to be, or else I might have shot my own foot off!

bottom line is a second car pulled up and a voice said "i saw everything, would you like me to call the cops for you?"

My only time was when my kid was in his sneaky, stealing any snacks he could find stage. We always told them if they come downstairs after we go to sleep to turn the lights on. He didn't. He snuck down with a flashlight searching for goodies.

Wifey wakes me and says someone is in the living room, I see the light from a flashlight. I grabbed my pistol and ended up pointing it right at him. Of course my finger wasn't on the trigger at that time because I wasn't ready to shoot.

Scared the hell out of him, and he and his brothers never come downstairs without turning on the lights.

Damned B-Guns. One hell of a first day man. I often wonder that myself.

First time I ever almost dropped the hammer on anybody I was walking around an apartment complex at about 2AM seeing what was going down in the area. You know, just getting a feel for the drunks and gang bangers you often see around that time there.

A car pulled up and parked just off the property, blacked out for a moment, then turned its lights back on and parked in the first available spot in the parking lot across the street from me. A male gets out of the front passenger side, and another gets out of the rear drivers side. The front passenger was yelling at another passenger in the back passenger side how he would take him around the corner behind an apartment building, and cut his neck where nobody could see it(HUGE RED FLAG!!). The driver side rear was doing the usual "I’m big and wanna be involved, but not get my hands dirty" and taunting the back passenger to come out and fight his buddy to the death. Female driver was just sitting there in shock…

I called over the radio for backup, and crossed the street, but remained out of sight and behind cover only 15-20 yards from the group of morons. When the back passenger continued to refuse to fight his buddy, the aggressor opens the back door to the car screams "I'm gonna kill you!" and all I see his fist swinging on the helpless passenger through the window and I hear screams.

My first reaction is, "oh shit, this guy is getting stabbed! I gotta help!" I move out to a position in the lot where I was still covered but now visible to the aggressor and the "taunter". I gave them both loud verbal commands to stop what they were doing and let me see their hands(of course there were a few choice words at that time.)

Upon review, I don’t remember my sidearm clearing leather(Beretta 92FS INOX at the time), just that I now had a faint sight picture in the lower part of my vision. Muscle memory was taking over. I knew my finger was off the trigger and I was at a ready position aimed just below their feet.

Both the aggressor and the "taunter" came into the open, but Mr. aggressor was still not showing me his hands, and my comfort level was falling. "Taunter" obeyed my commands and proned out on the ground for me, eyes facing away, arms spread, and palms up, but aggressor was still not listening to me. He began to get more angry, screaming and yelling about how its always the police's fault, and how he would take me out too. I still could not see his hands, and felt threatened by the fact he was moving towards me and I was now his 100% focus.

I remember acquiring a perfect sight picture on his center mass as i was yelling for him to show me his hands. At that exact moment I saw the oh so familiar red/blue glow on surrounding buildings, and heard the wail of sirens. He gave up, right then. Hands straight up, turned around, and proned out. As soon as I saw empty hands going up, I returned to a ready position, and covered my backup as they detained the two morons and covered the car.

For the next few moments I was trying to figure out why I couldn’t get my damn holster to snap shut(basic Safariland Top-Gun). I finally realized when I looked down what was wrong. The hammer on my sidearm was at half cock. That dumb SOB had come withing about 1/16th of an inch worth of trigger pull from becoming hamburger.

Guy in the back seat hadn’t gotten stabbed, just punched in the face a whole hell of a lot, messing him up pretty bad. Female driver was a little stunned, but this obviously wasn’t her first rodeo either, she went to detox on a DUI. 2 idiots went to jail for assault, and the victim went to the hospital then detox.

This had some minor effects on me. Some messed up nights of sleep, odd dreams, and even a few where I did actually take the guy out. But I was OK with that. I knew that I hadn't dont it, and if I had, I would have been justified.

This is why I always say, train when you can, then make some extra time to train, then lose a little sleep to train a little more. Prepare for it as much as possible, train your ass off, and read some books so you know what how your body will react. And ALWAYS make sure you come home at the end of the day. This whole thing came down to muscle memory, and I probably could have gotten away with shooting the SOB… But that’s not what I am out there for.

You've got to tell the whole story or else it isn't any fun.

it involved a car with 4 teen males thinking it was funny to wait until i was approx 15-20' from them on my MC, they pulled out in front of me laughing and pointing. wasn't so funny 63' of tire mark i finally stopped and was able to turn around. traffic stopped in 4 directions who witnessed the incident. had a lot of witnesses to vehicular assault (their part) according to LEs. thats all i can write about. sorry.........

Bravo! That's a really tough spot to be in... you never know what their intentions are, especially when you're dealing with people who have no regard for the law. I'm glad you had the presence of mind and training to prepare yourself for the worse, without having to shoot anyone. Keep up the good work. [Beer]

Well, I guess If yourself counts,, Chalk my body count at 1...

Down at the shooting range south of Springfield, I was shooting at the spinning pistol target they had. Due to the outside nature of the range and the fact they had been hit once or twice, They really didn't spin that good..

Had the .44 mag with some loads that were on the, shall we say, potent side.. Well, they started swinging with those hitting them..

Now, I will say there was a bar on the ground, to represent the shooting line. It was about 20 yrds back from the targets and I was back about another 15 yrds beyond that.. So I was about 35 yrds away from the targets..

Things are going good, I have the target moving. Then I guess I had one that wasn't quite up to par with the previous ones,, And it bounced.

I saw that it was heading back My way, the whole thing was kind of surreal.. It happened so fast, about all I had time to do was kind of a half turtle, I had on a fairly heavy jacket, so I figured I was semi safe.

It caught me about mid thigh on my right leg, felt like I got hit with a rock. I calmly gathered up my ammo and headed back to the Blazer about 120 yrds away. By the time I got there, it had started to bleed.. And bleed it did. I was wearing the old syle desert camo BDU's.

Needless to say it was a long ride home.. Funniest part, after I got the BDU's cleaned up, the only thing wrong with them was a broken thread of material..

Do I win?

Well, thank God I've never been in a posistion to shoot/be shot by another person with a firearm. So, does a BB gun count? Many years ago when I was a young, drunk idiot, my buddy thought it would be amusing to shoot me in the ass with a BB gun. Yep, the guys observed my reaction and named a dance after it. Its called the "shot-in-the-ass-shuffle". Only dance I've ever been able to do...

My revenge took the form of a wrist rocket and a well aimed marble. Like I said, young and stupid. Wouldn't dream of doing it today, but still funny as hell. "Shot-in-the-ass-shuffle" version 2.0. I win...

never been close.

the closest I've gotten was a few years back, some urban utes pulled up in front of the house and fired 7 rounds from a car. Thinking they were shooting at the house I grabbed the glock and went out the front door, expecting to come under fire and ready to return. They took off immediately after shooting. I stood in the street and watched them as they sped off up the street and turned at the end of the block. They had been shooting at the drug dealers that lived down the street.

The fun was when a CSPD cruiser rolled up and stopped right in front of me. Lit me with the spotlight, standing there in the street with a gun in my hand. I didn't move a muscle. The car sat for a second, then drove around me and sped off. I went back inside.

Hmmm. Might have been a good thing for me to include! He was armed but that was not a threat. He had a knife in his pocket. My actions were based off his words, motions, and fact he was keeping his hands hidden. ALWAYS watch the hands. Hands are the usually the thing that will kill you!!!

I have had a few other shoot/no-shoot situations outside the military that ended up as no-shoot, but this is the one that sticks out the most since it was my first. Never had to pull the trigger on another American.

Well, I guess If yourself counts,, Chalk my body count at 1...

Ha! I took a good one to my left hand, split it wide open but didnt bleed much at all. From that I got a nice mark on my TRP from being dropped (and partially hit), and a nasty scar on my hand. I may have took it to the throat had my pistol not been pointed in the right direction. [Tooth]

I took my wife to see Spamalot back in May, show let out around 10:30-11:00 (cant remember exactly). We parked in a complex a few blocks east of the Buell, and on our way back we walked by a pool hall. We cross over to the opposite side of the street from the hall as I didn't feel like running into anybody stumbling out of that place and the other side of the street seemed to be clear. On the other side of the street is a large office building and from around the corner I see the silhouette of a hooded individual stick his head out and look our way (I think the heels my wife had on got his attention) with the situation being somewhat cliche I immediately I go to condition orange and grab my wife's hand and we cross back over to the pool hall side of the street, about half way across he shouts to us "HEY!! WHACHYA'LL SCURD OF?" While trying to glance around at my surroundings and keep this guy in my sight I notice that there are three other guys with him and they walk out towards us to the curb, that's when I slowly reach under my jacket to verify - "Yep its the J Frame" and then...."SHIT!! Its the J Frame" (with the 5 rds I loaded it with - that's it). At that point one of them got a phone call and they all decided to up and head back in the direction from which we came. By the time my wife and I made it passed the Walgreens they were out of sight and we made our way to the complex where we parked. As we approached I noticed a squad car sitting at the entrance and the Officer was having a chat with the guy in the booth there, I then started to calm down and we quickly made our way to the car and got the hell outta dodge. That seemed to be the longest four blocks I ever walked and I never thought Id ever feel under gunned with my 340 but I sure did that night. Even though I didnt have to pull my weapon, this situation put a lot of things into perspective and I hope to God that I never find myself in a position where I have to point a loaded gun at somebody.

...didn't have to pull a gun, but made me change my ways... last monday (10/5/09) night... passed a fellow with my car walking fairly fast in the rain with a backpack on about a block from the house, didn't think much of it. Got home, pulled into the driveway and headed across the street to get the mail. Just happened to meet this guy nearly dead center of the street. He stops and points - "You live there?", No. He points at another house, "You live there?" No, what can I help you with. Keeping my distance, I'm unarmed, but planning things with my "limited" martial arts skills... "I need some food and just got off the highway from hitch hiking..." Go stand under the tree and I'll see if I can find something for you. He's wet, cold, really shakey, just nutty really, doesn't seem all "there". I get the mail and make my way back to my car, grab a pack of tuna I had in the car for possible lunch and ask him if he likes tuna, "just kinda mumbles and indicates with a nod he might..." So while standing at my car, I reach in and put my LCR in my waistband (damn I should have done this on the way home...) I go around the car and give him the tuna, he starts working on eating it like he hasn't had food in weeks. I tell him to wait a minute and I'll see if I can get him some other items... I go in the house and dig through the hunting crap and dig out some pre-packaged items he can have. Give them to him, he sets them on the ground while still eating the tuna. "I need a thrift store..." Why? Where are you headed... "going West... and I need a blanket..." I just happened to have an old blanket outside that wasn't wet and I offered it to him, and he set it down with the food on the ground. "you act weird..." why? "you a cop?" Nope. But you can't stay here, you need to move on. I go back inside the house and he wanders off to the school across the street, digs through their re-cycle dumpster, puts some cardboard over his head and heads down the street... a few minutes later I look and see that he never did take the food or blanket with him... strange... Called the wife and told her to call me when she's approaching the house, as I'm not really sure this guy went very far and I want to escort her in the house...

lesson learned, since I can't carry at work or even take anything in the building, be sure and put on whatever firearm I have with me when leaving for home, I just might need it when I step out... I might have had the executive letter opener in my pocket, but don't remember... (plastic cold steel knife)

I've got one other story, didn't involve shooting, but is another "doh" moment... ya just never know when you need something.

kc.

This is also why I carry even when on longer roadtrips. I'm always worried that I'll have a blowout or there's a road side emergency of some sort and I'll hop out to take care of it and be w/o my gun and something goes down. It's funny because I joke that I have CPR certification as well as a CCW so I can handle most any emergency. 'Hello, I'm here to help! Do you need someone saved or shot?!?' [Tooth]

I once got into a big fight with my girlfriend, and left the house during a blizzard at like 2:45 am. We were both pretty upset and I didn't want to have a gun on me if I encountered any law enforcement and try and have to explain why I'm driving around in the middle of the night, in the middle of a blizzard, all pissed off, and with a gun. So I left it at home in the safe.

As I'm driving down the road, I see this car parked on the side of the street with flashers on and three people standing outside waving a gas can around. I was driving down Federal, so I figured there had to be a near by gas station. I pull over and it is a girl and two guys. The girl is arguing with them because they just want to walk and she wants a ride to the gas station. I told her that is fine, but since I had a car full of stuff, I only had room for one. They continue to argue and then I see her throw her hands up in the air, and start storming back toward my car. She opens the door, throws her gas can in and says, "Those dumb assholes don't want to come, can you please just take me?" I said, no problem, we'll be back in a jiffy. She closes the door, I do a U-turn, and one of the guys runs in front of my car, arms waving. I stop, he comes to her side, opens the door, tells her to get the fuck out of the car and that he'll go. So he hops in, looks around and says, "How many people you got in here? Oh...just you? I thought you had a car full of dudes or something and were going to drive off with my girlfriend." I told him I'm just trying to help some people who look like they are freezing their asses off in the snow. He says, "Alright, thanks man."

So I'm driving back the other way on Federal, and he's talking to me and I just get more and more uncomfortable by the second. He opens the conversation with, "You smoke man?" (He means weed). I told him no. He goes on and the conversation is pretty one sided with a bunch of stuff that went pretty much like this:

"Man, I love getting high. Tonight we were drinking. I love getting drunk and fighting and shit man."

ME: Oh yeah, where were you drinking at?

"The greenbelt. We're homeless. We just hit the liquor stores and then drink outside by the creek man."

"Hey man, that was my girlfriend and my friend back there. I didn't want you to take off with her you know man? I wasn't gonna let you take off with her. I would have thrown my knife at your car...or something man." short pause "She knows how to handle herself though man. I got her this knife....I got my own knife man (pats his jacket) but I got her, her own knife and I taught her how to use it you know? I mean she will put up a fight if anyone tries to mess with her you know? But I love her and didn't want her going with you."

ME: Yeah, I understand what you mean buddy.

Then just various other stuff about how much he loved his girl, getting high, getting drunk, and how they were homeless and living out of their car (Dodge Stratus). I made some comments about how I used to work with a couple that was homeless and had some pets in the car with them, etc etc.

So after an eternity (about a mile) I finally find a gas station that was open and pull in. He seems wary about getting out. Originally the girl said she only wanted a ride one way, and would walk back, but I told him that I was going back that way anyway, and there was no reason for him to freeze. He tried to give me like five bucks, but I told him that I was pretty sure that he needed it more than I did. So after awhile, when he seemed sure enough that I wasn't going to take his gas can and leave him there, he finally got out to get the gas. I drove him back to their car and dropped him off.

I didn't have anything with me except for an extra magazine (full) that I was holding in my hand in case I needed to use it as a fist pack. I haven't ever really had to defend myself, and am generally not real comfortable in the face of a potential physical encounter, so this trip was pretty nerve wracking for me. I already wasn't having the best night, since just an hour before I got locked out of my place during the fight without a jacket.

Like Graves said, it was about the longest driven mile in my life; and like gnihcraes said, never again do I want to be caught unprepared like that.

Also, don't pick up hitch hikers, even when it's snowing.

I always take something with me when traveling before I had my ccw permit, just for those reasons stated above about having to fix a flat tire or something in the middle of nowhere land.

Ok... I got a few minutes... here is another one... (you'll like this)

Fine summer day, in the garage, cleaning the guns... all of the guns. Hear a loud screeech and a quick acceleration then screeech again as this old Jeep Grand Cherokee goes sliding by my driveway. I hear loud yelling... so I wander out of the garage and to the street. As I step to into the street this big thug of a guy gets out of the jeep (which is sideways in the street) "mind your own f*cking business!" uh? so I keep my distance as I try to figure out what is going on? He yells some more at me and gets back in his truck and drives off like a mad man... I finally figure out that there is a girl at the neighbors door beating on it asking for help. I go over and talk to the old couple and her, asking the old couple to go get me the phone and I call 911. The girl is pretty beat up and apparently he's been chasing her through the neighborhood with his truck. She's been doing pretty well keeping him at bay. Police show up and we go through the normal reporting routines. The officers were laughing at me because all my guns were at my disposal, but in pieces. I never had to go to court, he pled guilty to domestic abuse or something and got locked up for a bit.

Note: Always keep one gun assembled and functioning at all times. Doh!

Not sure that I would have done anything with a gun, other than keep myself safe, which is hard to do when they are not together...

I've got one more "wish I had a gun" story I'll post in a little bit...

kc.

Crazy that you posted that! Whenever I clean my guns, I like to always keep at least ONE fully operational and ready to be loaded. Lately I've been feeling stupid doing that though, since nothing ever happens. Great story!

+1

Just like whenever I clean guns or go to the range or a competition or whatever I ALWAYS have at least one gun loaded with carry ammo on my person. I've heard WAY too many stories to think I'm safe at a gun range or at a 'designated shooting place' out in the sticks. I rotate what guns I shoot/clean and always have another one loaded with carry ammo ready to go just in case. Some days I train with my target handgun (G17) and keep my carry gun (G26) on me. Other times I will practice with the carry gun and at those times I load my target gun with carry ammo to keep on me. Call it paranoid but it makes sense that if you carry in places you think are safe you also carry in places where there's lots of guns and things might not be as safe.

true... a friend that I take with me to shooting areas and ranges, always has a loaded weapon other than the one he is practicing with for those same reasons. He's more than once had some stranger walk up while they were shooting and not feel comfortable with that person being there...(non shooters, just strangers) (usually happens at the outdoor shooting places on public lands)...

The Doh! Moments remind me of a story. Speaking of going shooting and no keeping a gun handy

About a year ago I was out in the desert outside of Tucson and doing some moving and shooting practice on a few targets with a friend of mine. It’s about 11pm and we think we are totally alone, as we are way out of town. We wrap up shooting for a while and the two of us are down range picking up brass, all hunched over with flash lights, just talking about form, and women, and so on. As we are doing this a car pulls up next to our campsite, where ALL of our guns were, and aims its headlights right at us. We are sitting there, fully blind to what this guy is doing and he spends a few long seconds in his car just looking at us.

The guy is in a really old beat up car so we put police out of the equation right away, which just makes us more nervous. He starts shouting out of his car, asking about what we are doing and what we are up to and so on, and you can tell the guy just isn’t right in the head. Words are slurred and he isn’t always making sense. He starts asking questions we don’t like to answer, about where we live, if we have women at home alone, what/how many guns we have. My friend is an Army sniper(shame on him) starts moving off to one side and I start going the other direction as best we can, making our way towards our guns, real slow, as he is going on with his questions. I did my best to keep my strong side away from him, didn’t have anything on me, but I figured it would be best if only I knew that.

After about the 2 longest minutes I had in a long time, I am standing behind my truck’s engine, trying to get to my rifle, and my friend is behind my truck, in the dark with his rifle. The guy eventually took off, no idea who he was or what he was up to, but we sure got the wrong vibe and got caught completely unprepared.

We felt un-believably stupid that night. The deserts out there are generally not a safe place, at night especially, and some fool weirdo is the least of one’s worries, but he caught us, just lucky it wasn’t a drug runner or something of that ilk. I switched form a one-point sling to a two point sling, so as I could pick up ammo with my rifle on after that night.

I have a few storys from the desert come to think of it

That was a pretty bizarre situation!
I've never had anything quite like that happen, but probably 10 years ago or so I just started keeping a gun on me while checking targets, etc. In addition to that, I also keep any other arms that are left on the table unloaded. It just occurred to me that instead of someone checking out your guns while you are downrange (which really irritates me, but fortunately is rare), they could easily use them against you or steal them.
Probably a good thing for all members to consider. Imagine how it would feel for any of us, as responsible gun owners, to have one of our guns used to harm someone or commit a crime.

Sorry we're getting off on a bit of a tangent but since we're on this little side topic I will post the story I heard quite a while ago. It takes place at Pawnee and it goes like this:

Three College age kids are out shooting and arrived in two trucks. While shooting another car pulls up somewhat close to the others but nothing to make them think too much. One of the kids heads back to town leaving the other two who continue shooting. Since the witness left the rest is just hearsay but it doesn't take a forensic expert to figure this one out. Both were found shot to death and no firearms or ammo or anything of value was found. The kid who left to go back into town had a vague description of the car/guy but said that they had half a dozen or so firearms that they brought with that were nowhere to be found. Sounds to me like the guy got there and was planning his timing for when they had unloaded their guns and were either checking targets, reloading or both to make his move.

Now, as I already stated I have NO idea if this story is accurate or not but even if it's 100% fabricated it could easily happen if you're not careful and teaches a very good lesson.

I'll not let you get back to your regularly scheduled thread of confirmed stories.

Ok...the wife and I are camping up near Reudi reservoir, about a mile and a half up a 4WD road, and well off the main path. It started raining about 4:30, and we went to bed at about 10. I'm sleeping in boxer shorts and a tshirt, as it is a bit brisk in early September in those parts. About 3 am, I'm awakened by the sound of a barely muffled small block Chevy, and a whole BUNCH of light coming through the side of the tent. Some jackass in a rusted out mid seventies Blazer with about 6 sets of off road lights pulls right into the campsite, and says "I'm hunting bears, seen any? I have my 1911 in my hand, partially hidden behind my right hip, cocked and locked. I am standing in the pouring rain, in a t-shirt and boxers, and this jackhole wants to have a conversation about hunting conditions in the middle of the night? Something didn't feel right about the situation, but said idjit must have seen something that made him want to move on to an easier target. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep the rest of that night, and now I have a lever action 45-70 in the tent when we're camping(I figure it makes better bear medicine than the .45acp, anyhow).

How about, "When have you come the closest to NEVER shooting someone?"

My two partners and I had just finished the judgmental training part of a CO concealed handgun class a month or so ago. When we're "shooting" on the simulator our guns are locked in the safe - safety reasons and all that.

Here we are, the 3 of us, certified, professional firearms instructors teaching people how to be prepared, avoid conflict, always be ready, blah, blah, blah...

We come out of the classroom after the last student left, it's dark, and there's some shifty looking transient-type hanging out in the shadows in front of our class. Guy was "out there", too. He starts quickly walking right towards the 3 of us without saying a word...like he's on a mission.

My partner quietly asks, "You got your gun?".

"Uh, no. It's in the safe. Do you have yours?", I asked.

"No. It's in the safe."

In about a 1/4 second I'd already visualized the headlines in the paper the next day:

3 Concealed Firearm Instructors Robbed in Front of Shooting School - None Armed!

Luckily the kid was just curious what we were doing and wandered away after a few innocent questions.

I felt stupid.

Well, my one story already has a thread. But I do have another one that's kind of simple and funny.

My brother is a hardcore liberal... he wasn't until he got married (go figure). Anyways, grandpa (rest in peace), dad, and I always go (went) shooting and talked about guns, etc. So they are no stranger to my family. One day John (my brother) is spending the night at my place. It was a long day for me and I was tired, so I "forgot" John was spending the night traveling through to go back home. Middle of the night I wake up and hear some noises in the kitchen. Get out of bed, go to the closet and pull out the 12 ga. I walk into the kitchen and yell, "What the @$#^ you doing mother @#$^?!" at the top of my lungs while racking the slide and leveling the barrel.... John screams like the woman he is and sprays milk everywhere. I realize it's him and apologize profusely... "Not used to having others in the house" I say. This was before I was married.

To this day he rarely talks to me and hates guns.....

I don't really have any good stories as of yet. But my father told me one that had me shaking. Dad has been in constuction for the better part of his life since he was like 16 (left home at 13). Anyway he was woking at the channel/tower 31 jobsite. I can't remember if he was the super on that job or not, but he and another guy were having heated differences of opinions all day long. So lunch time rolls around and Dad is sitting there having his lunch when the guy that he's been at it all day with comes to sit down next to my Dad. The guy sits down, opens his lunch box and pulls out a 44 mag, puts it square between my dads eyes and pulls the hammer back. At this time one of the other guys finished with his lunch sees whats going on grabs a shovel and proceeds to sneak up behind 44 mag dude. Taking notice of this my Dad keeps the guys attention focused on him. My dad says many words were exchanged. But my Dad basically told him if he pulls the trigger "my problems will be over and yours will be just beginning". The guy lowers his weapon, gets rushed and the weapon taken from him. The proper authorities alerted and he never seen or heard from the guy again. My dad has many crazy stories of the trouble he and his 7 brothers were always into. I don't even know how he's still alive to this day.

I was driving to lunch on a nice warm weekday here in longmont when a group of gangbanger wannabe kids pull out in front of me. They start to brake check me and are a laughing about it. Luckily they get in the left lane to turn at the next light which happens to turn red before we get there. They start shouting obsenities from thier car at the stop light, and are attempting to turn it into a fight, which I want no part of. They guy in the passenger seat starts digging around on the floor boards and acting suspicious, so I grab my G20 sitting next to me and put it just below the window frame with my right hand. The passenger finds what he's looking for and starts to swing his arm out the window like he had a gun. I brought the glock up above the window just before he finished putting his arm out. As i had thought he did indeed have a weapon and i was ready to fire... but he was lucky i had noticed it was a clear airsoft gun and not a threat. When He realized mine was real they took a hard left turn through a red light.

I got their plate numbers, and reported them to the local authorities.

Last summer, goin to bed some time between midnight and 1am. I hear lots of yelling out in the street, a bunch of people calling out my neighbor's name. I'm about to open the window and yell at them to shut up when I see from the patio light they are all carrying weapons.

2 sledge hammers and a freaking fire axe!

I go for my AR, which I keep loaded behind the dresser. I realize there is no light on it, so I put it back and just call the cops. These guys go to town on the neighbor's house, smashing cars, chopping up the deck, throwing rocks through windows, etc...

The guy with the fire axe opens the front door to the house, and gets slugged square in the nose by my neighbor, so they take off running before the cops show up.

Apparently it all started because of some drunk argument they had in the car an hour or so earlier...

Used to have pics of the carnage, but they are gone now.

I don't understand your decision to put the gun back because it had no light. Good on calling the cops though. I had a similar issue in the lawn of my apartment complex once and I called the cops as well.

Back in the pre-CCW days, must have been about '95, I'd been married around a year, had already quit drinking (or this would have turned out different, I'm sure) and was heading home from a friends house. After 10:00 on a weeknight because I was working weird hours. Anyway, driving down in the DU area when this blue Taurus cuts me off out of nowhere. I honk at the SOB while narrowly missing him, and he decides to play with me. Slowing down, switching lanes, you know the routine.
After a couple blocks of this I slow down and pull over a bit hoping he'll get bored driving 10mph in the bike lane and just go away. Didn't work. He hits the brakes and I figure he wants to get out and fight, so I punch it and try to go around.
That didn't work either, he starts smashing into my Bonneville with the Taurus. This is a new one to me, I'd never seen a road rager that would damage his own car, so I figure now this guy has gone over the line. I'm also right beside him and can see that he's got several friends in the car with him. I figure now all the criteria have been met so I pull my 1911 from wherever it was legal for it to be at the time ;) and try to anticipate his next move.
His next move was apparently to listen to one of his buddies that had a better view of me and took off like a bat out of hell.

I pulled over at the police substation that was a block or so away and eventually got someone to listen (I had to find a pay phone and call it in, the chick behind the desk wouldn't do anything unless her dispatcher told her or something). The cop that finally arrived was a good guy, I sat in the passenger seat of his car while he tracked down the plate number I gave him. Kind of funny listening to the owner answering the phone all pissed off that someone's calling that late (nearing midnight by this time, I think). "Yeah that's my car, why? Whadda mean do I know where my car is? It's parked in my fu.... MY F'ING CAR IS GONE!!"

Joyriders, never caught them as far as I know. And the wife was pissed that I was out so late (pre-cell phone)

I read a good number of these and am sorry that I haven't read them all. I have been in a number of situations where I could have justifiably shot someone. For those of you that have seen combat and actually shot someone this is probably a whole different ball game. Also, I have not shot anyone in the line of duty.

The scenario as follows:

I was responding to a "shots fired" call, with only one call. Usually real gun shots will get several calls or no calls. Also people often mistake fire works, back firing cars, loud crashes, etc for gun shots. However, I make it a point to not be complacent.

I was the first officer to arrive in the area with two more coming. The car I was driving was an older car that had an older style gun rack and therefore my AR15 was in my trunk (cruiser ready-full magazine, no round in the chamber). I pulled into the neighborhood and thought to myself that I am going to a "shots fired" call so I stopped, popped the trunk, pulled the AR out, put a round in the chamber, and put it in the seat next to me. I then pulled onto the street that the house was on that I was going to. I blacked out and as I am getting ready to park several houses away to try and sneak up on the house I see a figure run across the street. I see two more figures also running across the street behind the first one, leaving from the house where I was going to. I then turned my headlights back on, and put my spotlight on the two figures that were running after the first one.

This happened so fast that I did not have time to grab my rifle, I hopped out and, drew my gun, and started yelling at the three people. The first person, who was missing a shirt, covered completely in blood, and had major head trauma laid down first. The other two males, wearing all black, going after the guy started coming towards me. I yelled again for them to get on the ground and I started moving back and left, still have the closest guy at gunpoint and trying to watch the other two. The closest guy was about 5-7 yards from me, and I wanted to create a little distance. I thought to myself that these guys are going to stop and i put my finger on the trigger and was getting ready to shoot. I yelled again to get on the ground and they complied. I was prepared to fire on him immediately after that third verbal command, but as I was yelling he was getting on the ground. The other guy that was with him got on the ground as well.

I was alone here for about 15-20 seconds, in my mind, could have been more, could have been less, I will never know. My partner showed up and we held the three at gun point until other officers arrived to help. Of the two guys in black, the first guy had brass knuckles, pepper spray, and a knife on him, the second guy had a taser and pepper spray that we pulled off of him. The gun they used and failed in using to kill the first guy they ditched and we found it later.

That is the gist of it really. Like I said, not the first time and it wont certainly be the last time, but it sticks out the most to me. I thought of when I just had a CCW before I was an officer if I could have handled that situation as calmly as I did, ready and prepared to shoot, and I am not sure that I would have. Sad to say, the more times this happens the easier it is to handle and work through.

I had something similar happen to me.

I was at a graduation party for my High School graduation. I went to HS in a podunk town in Missouri so, as you can imagine, the party was held in a barn out in the middle of nowhere. I walked a friend to his car as he was leaving. When I started walking back to the party some guy I didn't know (turns out this guy graduated 3 years earlier) calls me over to his car. When I got up to him he pulled out a .357 and put it up to the side of my head. I don't remember what sort of crap he was saying, but about a minute later I turned my head to the side of the gun as he pulled the trigger. The gun fired right next to my left ear. I had ringing in that ear for some time. Of course, the shot drew others over there and he threw the gun in his car and took off. I never did figure out what his problem was.

Ok, bring this thread alive again.

Another story: Tuesday 7/6/2010 - Taking my kids to summer camp. Stopped at the summer camp location, noticed a teenage girl in the parking area, near a car, looking at it and acting a little strange. Left my son (12) in the car while I check in the daughter to her school. Came back out and noticed the same girl in another strange area, taking pictures of the parking lot. Asked my son what he thought, he said she was taking pictures of the cars and other things.

She then proceeded to hang around the fence and gate at the school. I watched her for a few moments as I drove away.

It got to me, so I backed up and put the window down, asking her if she was dropping someone off or waiting for someone. "No". Ok do you work here? "No". "I went here, but I'm too old now." Ok, well you need to leave the premise. "Well, don't worry, I'm not going to kill anyone". She starts to walk away. Seems a little strange for you to be here. "That's what they always say..." ???? huh?

Ok, so I'm dialing LPD to have them check this suspicious subject out. So I follow her for several blocks until she stops at a local bus stop on a major route. I park and wait to see if LPD is going to show up.

Finally I flag an officer down and point her out. I tell my story, officer talks to the girl... Officer comes back and talks to me, apparently she's a "little slow" according to the officer, and she's "Afraid of me" ? Huh, I've done nothing but make minor contact and call 911 because she's talking about "not killing people" at a childrens summer camp that she has no business being around.

Anyway, all is good, I got them to contact her and make record of her being somewhere she probably shouldn't.

Ya just never know when or where you'll need to defend yourself or family.

(I was not ccw at the time, but it was reasonably accessible) Yeah yeah, I know, I should have been carrying.

Closest I ever came to using a firearm to defend my family.

First off, BIG THANKS to the Boulder Police Department!!

I was a very hot summer night and the windows in my bedroom were wide open, save the bug screens. I live in Boulder in a split level home, right when you walk inside you either go up or down, living room, kitchen, 1 br and 1 bedroom are upstairs, 3 bedrooms, a br, my son and I are downstairs.

At the time our Lab/Pit Bull mutt was 4 and very alert and active. She started barking very loud at about 5am, what do I do? The stupid thing and say "Hush!" she barks again and this time I can hear something climbing the fence between our neighbors home, then dropping onto the ground. I peak out the window and see the silhouette of a large man coming toward my window. In about 2.2 seconds I have my Winchester 1300 in ready position with some healthy Federal Buck shot loaded. Safety is ON and my finger is NOWHERE near the trigger. I yell to him ''YOU ARE TRESPASSING ON MY PROPERTY...YOU NEED TO LEAVE NOW!!" He replies in the dialect I remember from my Bouncer days....'drunkenese' In his drunken drawl he says "I can go anywhere I fucking want to go!" and he starts to advance on my bedroom window. I said "I am calling the Police you should leave now!" I dial 911 and find myself almost repeating everything the operator asked me. I describe him as a male, 6', could be 200lbs, long hair, that's the best I could make out from his silhouette, but the sun was starting to come up and I could almost see him. The operator then asks "Does he have any weapons?" So, without thinking, I repeat "Does he have any weapons?" and he replies "MAYBE I GOT A GUN!" So I tell the operator he said he might have a gun. So now I'm behind good cover, in the doorway of my room ready to lay waste to the window if he make entry. I'm shaking really bad at this time. The sun is starting to rise and now I can see him clearly and he's had enough so he starts walking toward my window yelling. He's 1' from my window, his leg starts to go back like he's going to kick my window in. My Defender is now SAFETY OFF, my finger is on a physical reference point, and I am trained on his chest. I come to terms with my maker right at that moment and I apologize to him/her for what I'm about to do, my son is sleeping behind me, if need be I was ready defend my family.

Just at the moment of no return when he's about to kick in the window I hear "POLICE FREEZE LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS DO IT NOW!" and it repeats "LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS!" He steps back, I run upstairs and look out the windows, there were 3 BPD officers all with Firearms drawn and trained on the douchebag. They take him into custody, he's yelling and cursing at them. They ask me what I would like down with him and my reply was "whatever makes your shift easier I'll back!" that was it, they took him away and never heard about it again.

THANKS AGAIN BOULDER POLICE!!

My story is already posted somewhere on here....

Basics: Three guys try to rob me with knives... I had gun. (no shots fired, but I did draw down) They were introduced to the police.... then got out a few days later... grrr...

When my dad was younger, he shot a home burglar. It wasn't anything special but did have a twist: Guy broke in, dad heard the noise and confronted. Guy tried to fight, dad shot in gut, then he tried to run, dad shot in leg. Cops come, end of story. No charges pressed on my dad. BUT: Turned out the robber was a friend of one of dads' soldiers... Never found out the "why" though CID did get involved.

That said... Hey don't discount what a retarded girl can do...I've seen some f'n wacked out bipolar people that get on a drug binge, seem slow and retarded one second and will try to rip your head off (not a euphemism) the next. Who knows if she has some lost-custody case in that school and is going to snap the moment she sees the kid. Psych patients can do some unbelievably unpredictable things that you never see coming. Usually it's really funny, but sometimes it's quite dangerous to themselves and anyone around them. Not saying this chick needed a piece pulled on her, but at least contacting LEO about it if the guy felt something was wrong was a good response.

Matix and Platt, the murderers/robbers behind the "Miami FBI shoot-out" had targeted several people shooting on informal ranges out in the boondocks.

Murdered those folks and stole their weapons to use for committing additional crimes.

I've always made a point of keeping at least one magazine of "serious" ammunition loaded and on my person. And when I go shooting out in the boondocks, if armed friends aren't back at the firing line, a weapon goes down-range with me.

heck yeah, people tend to sneak up on you while you are busy shooting. Always try to take a friend who keeps an eye out and is armed while the other is shooting.

This is a good thread - brings things a little closer into perspective, I've enjoyed reading it. It's good to be reminded of the realities and responsibilities that carrying a weapon entail.

Only encounter I've ever had was parked at a burger drive-thru up in Englewood. About 10:00 at night with my girlfriend. Punk-ass kid with baggy clothing waiting on the other side of the restaurant for someone to get off shift or something - clad head to toe in red colors. I guess it offended him that I made eye contact with him through the drive-thru window, because he jerked his head upwards at me and did the "what're you looking at" pose with his arms out. Then started walking around the building to where we were parked, and headed briskly toward the passenger side where my girl was sitting. Couldn't see one of his hands behind his back. I didn't feel the situation was at a point to justify actually drawing on him, but I wanted to be upfront about my mind-set. So I pulled my Para .14 (stainless steel makes a pretty glint in the parking lot lights. :-) ), chambered a round, and set it on the dashboard with my hand casually on it. (Not pointing at him, but in clear view.) He stopped, smirked, looked around with an expression that was supposed to mean "what? I wasn't coming over there - just wanted to make sure the menu board was in good working order, my good man."

And the fries were soggy... So not worth leaving the house for. :-)

Training is what get's you through them. The act of intentionally pointing a loaded gun at someone will affect you for life.

+168

How that kind of happening will affect you, is affected by 2things : your mindset and your training. With proper training, your mindset has alot better changes to handle the aftermath. With training, your changes to survive without mental or physical injuries are very much better.

Of course, it is impossible for some people to get the right mindset in any situation.

I might have got better training than many. At least it is the way our instructors wanted us to think :) I was probably quite lucky anyway, as my experiences made me]much[/b] more peaceful and calm. I did not got bad permanent injuries, which may have had something to do with it.
I would probably not be nearly so nice and peaceful guy today, without certain experiences.

I was thinking, if I should share my experiences or not. Places or other details about where and when probably do not tell you guys anything. That is why I do not include details ;)

Closest thing, I would say it was really close. I can remember it like it happened yesterday. It was in duty, long time ago and far from here.
I was in position with a rifle. 7,62x51 with a fixed silencer, shooting 70gr alucore short range bullets at about 4200 fps. Pretty bad ammo, if you shoot somebody to torso close range, it looks like he has got contact shot from 12 ga. I knew, if I have to shoot someone to center mass, it is almost certain killshot, even that incident happened in a city near a big hospital.

I am watching a door about 40 yd away, if somebody is coming out or not. After about 3,5 hours door opens and a BIG guy comes out with short AK carbine on his shoulder.
He starts walking around and starts yelling to my colleagues, but it is unlikely he could see me. I put my scopes reticle to certain place in his upper torso, when he is at about 60 degrees angle to my position. I can see his beard is pretty long, he has old camoflage in bad condition etc.
He is handling his carbine, but it stays on his shoulder.

The following happens probably in few seconds :
Suddenly the carbine drops to his right hand and immediately I get a message to shoot. I am little confused, as I can see from the scope that I can not hold the rifle steady as in training. However, as the range is pretty short, I do not have difficulties to keep the reticle in the correct area.
I have made a mental decision to shoot, safety has been off for a while and my finger is on trigger. But, as suddenly as carbine dropped to his hand, it drops to the ground. He then raises his arms up slowly. Thanks to training, I am able to take my finger off the trigger without firing.
When I can see my colleagues to take possession of the big guy, I realize my work is over and I feel pretty dizzy. Then I find out, that my heart is pounding probably 200+ times a minute and I have not been breathing for some time.
At that point I realize, why sniper rifles usually do not have very lightweight triggers. Earlier I was bitching to my officer in charge that I want to adjust my rifles trigger way lighter, but I stop bitching after that.

Just my 2 cents :)

I don't feel that way. I've done it (drawn down) and I have no second thoughts about needing to pull that trigger if it comes to it. If you're stupid enough to make me draw down on you, I have no problems ending your life.... Why does everyone say that it'll change your life? I feel like I would have no problem carrying out the task.... "The emotional trauma" etc... I don't buy it.

So am I messed up, cold blooded, etc? Maybe I have a very strong survival instinct? Too many video games? Trying to be a desktop commando? Time to see a pysc huh?...

I've never ended anyone's life, so obviously take what I saw with a grain of salt. I remember with your story the first thing I asked you is why you didn't shoot at the guy holding a knife out to threaten you. Instead, you just played it cool, and because of your actions, all three guys and yourself walked away unscathed. Knowing how that situation ended, and how now a year later it is no big deal, do you think that if you killed one of those guys, that you'd ever look back on your actions and wonder if you did the right thing? From the way that I read the story, it could have gone either way for those guys, and they are lucky to have messed with you, and not someone who got scared, panicked, and pulled the trigger. I think the issue is revisiting irreversible actions and asking yourself, "Is there anything I could have done to prevent those ultimate results?" Of course you won't feel any emotional effects of what happened in your situation, because nothing really happened. You had the most story book ending possible of such an encounter. That's not meant to be snarky either, you should be very proud of that.

I wasn't able to verbalize my thoughts as well as I would have liked, but take it for what it is worth. It is often human nature to second guess your actions.

Hmm.. I do understand what you are trying to say. Even if I did kill someone, I can't think of myself second guessing that decision. Obvisouly if I did kill, the kill was warrented or I wouldn't have done it. I try not to put myself in situations where I would second guessing would creep up.... I don't think I would feel bad or emotioanlly traumatized, etc about an idiot asking to lose their life. It's like that saying of "It's either you or me and it sure as hell ain't going to be me." I guess I'm just saying bottom line, I wouldn't have a problem killing someone if it was warranted.

There's a lot more I want to say, but it'll sound all keyboard commando-ish again and I'm sure the combat folks will jump in here shortly and reprimand me adequately and et al, etc, ad nausem.

Although, on second thought... I always second guess myself for buying that dang car I have. But at the time, it was cheap and I needed one so I still stand by buying it! HAHA

Long and technical, but interesting read...

"One major modern revelation in the field of military psychology is the observation that this resistance to killing one's own species is also a key factor in human combat. ...when left to their own devices, the great majority of individual combatants throughout history appear to have been unable or unwilling to kill."

That blew my mind... I didn't think that would be a problem, especially the way I think about things such as it's either him or me.

Then I saw:

"The exception to this resistance can be observed in sociopaths who, by definition, feel no empathy or remorse for their fellow human beings. Pit bull dogs have been selectively bred in order to ensure that they will perform the unnatural act of killing another dog in battle. Similarly, human sociopaths...since they were not disturbed by the requirement to kill."

Which kind of gets me to thinking... am I labled as a sociopath since I percieve I would have no problem shooting/killing someone if the terms warranted such as I believe there are some in the human species who should not be drawing breath? (Or just a young punk kid with no idea what he's talking about being all desktop commando-ish.)

The little tidbit about Vietnam was interesting and to me seems to bear some truth since one of my fathers friends was in 'Nam (tunnel rat, amazing stories) and ended up committing suicide several years ago.

I did like how it ended:

"It is often said that "All's fair in love and war," and this expression provides a valuable insight into the human psyche, since these twin, taboo fields of sexuality and aggression represent the two realms in which most individuals will consistently deceive both themselves and others. Our psychological and societal inability to confront the truth about the effects of combat is the foundation for the cultural conspiracy of repression, a deception and denial that has helped to perpetuate and propagate war throughout recorded history."

You are confusing your ability to pull the trigger to save your life, and how you will feel about it later.

EDITED: Bear, I think you are taking this too far in one direction. Many actions we take in life cause permanent changes in ourselves. You seem to equate that to mean that you can't live with a decision you've made. It is not always that serious. If you think about something often, it has had an effect on you. It could be for better or worse. It doesn't necessarily have to make or break your entire life. People who go through boot camp are probably changed forever, but it's not like they are completely different people or unable to function or something.

Just that you are even wondering if you are a sociopath, probably means you're not one by the way. :)

no, but you may qualify if you are forced to shoot someone (or otherwise take a life, even by accident), and then feel no remorse.. it's one thing to think you can do something without emotion, it's quite another to go through it and still feel no emotion.

No, I have never killed anyone, so this isn't from experience- I just believe that no matter how much you prepare for it, if the time comes, you'll second guess if you could have done something different.

I was on my way home from work. The road I drive narrows from two lanes to a single lane in S/E Aurora.

While its two lanes I'm a bit in front of a motorcyclist in the other lane.

When the lanes merge, he speeds up and gets in front of me. He proceeds to drop about 5 mph below the posted speed limit. For a bit he keeps looking over shoulder at me making some hand gestures. He figures I'm following too close or so I gather.

Now I'm a long time motorcyclist myself. Having been riding for over 25 years and still ride to this day. I'm ALWAYS cognizant of motorcyclists.

We approach a stoplight with a group of vehicles and stop for the light. He puts the sidestand down, gets off his bike and starts walking towards my car, yelling and making all kinds of hand gestures.

I'm taken completely off-guard by his actions. I put my hand on my G27 and just barely roll down the window.

Now alot is going through my mind in micro-seconds. I look in my mirrors to see if there is a way out. Nope. Car and another bike to my left, curb/sidwalk trees to my right, car behind me. I'm not getting out of my car as I don't want to escalate the situation.

He reaches the hood of my car and is yelling at me and talking to the motorcyclist to my left (who just happens to be there). While I couldn't hear what was being said between the two, he flips me off and walks back to his bike.

Light changes and he takes off and I make my planned turn...

What I wonder to this day is; Depending on the scenario what action would he have to have done for me to actually shoot him?

IMO, if he pulled a gun, then I believe I would be within my right to shoot him.

If he walked over to the window, punched it out and tried to pummel me would that have been okay to shoot him OR step on the gas and nail his bike and put space between us?

Fortunately I didn't have to play out any of those scenarios but it was probably the closest I'd come...

Reasonable belief of imminent serious bodily injury.

That's your legal definition. Doesn't mean he has to act first. Doesn't mean he has to hit you. But, you must have a situation that a court would reasonably believe your claim that you were in fear of "serious bodily injury"

I tend to agree that had he put his fist through your window that you could safely argue you were in fear of imminent serious bodily injury. I wouldn't even wait for the "tried to punch me" part. The simple act of violently breaching your personal space enclosed by your vehicle with his FIST proves intent.

just my opinion

Just the act of getting off his bike coming to your car yelling and flipping you off is pretty close to threat of bodily injury. If he came to the window in the same manner i know i would have drawn on him. Breaks the window or puts his hand on the handle then it will go further.

Just remember if you present your firearm to be the first to call police and tell them the situtation.

Since we're discussing what level of threat is acceptable to draw on a PERSON, what about an animal? If you are out running or out on a hike with your family and a dog shows aggression towards you, how do people handle that?

I've thought about it before a few times. For instance, if I were running on a street and there was a vehicle I could jump up onto when confronted by a dog, I'd try that option first.

This is the one that I lose sleep over. The reason being is if I shoot some thug piece of shit he made his decision and have an opportunity to make another decision. If a dog charges me, my wife or our dogs then that's something the dog is doing out of instinct and it's actually not HIS fault but the owner's fault. He just doing something because he doesn't know any better and that's why there's leash laws and owners aren't allowed by law to let their dogs run free. That doesn't negate the threat presented unfortunately and if I had to shoot someone's dog because of the owner's irresponsibility I would be crushed and would likely look to whoop the shit out of the owner for putting me into that position of having no choice. I hate irresponsible pet owners because whatever had happens to their dog generally won't affect them. [Rant1]

As much as I like dogs and other animals, I'm pretty sure I'd have less bad feelings about putting down a dog when threatened.

I'd kind of like some input about how the police would respond to shooting an animal though. If I guy attacks you with a knife and you shoot him. Cops will probably show up and pat you on the back. But if you shoot a dog that was just trying to saw your leg off at the knee with his teeth, are you going to be given a ticket for unlawfully discharging your fire arm in city limits? Public endangerment? etc?

I have no issue with shooting a dog that is threatening me or my family (dogs included). I love my dogs like they are children. If another dog attacks it will be all over. As for the police if they try to bring charges against you a lawyer could win that pretty easy.

Irving

Something tells me that you wouldn't get a pass as easily if you shoot a dog that is attacking your dog.

Anyone seen that youtube video where the 5 drunk guys are running around in the street hitting people's cars and trying to start a fight? At one point, one of the drunks reaches in and tries to punch some random guy driving by. I can't tell how I would react to that (another guy walks up the hood of the car and onto the roof), but I'm pretty sure that if I were advising another person, I'd tell them that it'd be a bad shoot because the driver of the car could just drive away.

**What actually happens is that the driver of the car pulls down the block, gets out with an aluminum baseball bat, and cracks a few of the guys in the head before he drops the bat, runs back to his car, and has his window smashed out with the bat he drops. **

Something tells me that you wouldn't get a pass as easily if you shoot a dog that is attacking your dog.

I think you would. Here's a story I don't think I've told on here. Check out the pictures I posted of my dog Buddy. Look specifically at his right ear and find the scarring on his face and right flanks.

Several years ago when I lived up in Ft. Collins I was at a dog park with Buddy. Two guys in a pickup drive up with a pitbull in the bed. The passenger gets out, picks up the pitbull and just throws him (literally) over the fence into the dog park. The dog immediatly goes on the offensive, running after other dogs and starting fights. People are yelling and scrambling.

Luckily, I don't like to be in big crowds and am not very talkative with people to whom I'm not aquianted, so Buddy and I are on the far side of the park. The pit eventaully gets around to seeing Buddy (only one gate in and out and the fence was too high for me to climb over and then hoist Buddy over) and charges him. I try to put myself in front of Buddy but both dogs are just too quick (or I'm too slow). The pit latches on to Buddy. I'm wearing steel toes due to work and am kicking the ever living crap out of this dog (and I'm not a small dude), even in the face but it has no effect. I back off, draw and fire while yelling and warning the supposed owners what I'm doing.

3 shots. 2 hits, 1 miss. 1 front left chest, 1 left side head.

Then all hell breaks loose. People stop screaming about their dogs and they are like "@#^$&, there's a GUN!!!" Cops show up not SECONDS after I finished firing, so someone was quick in calling them thankfully. (Think I was either in disbelief that they threw a dog over the fence or thought maybe the dog would behave itself....) They draw on me, put me on the ground, handcuff, blah, blah, blah. Witnesses step up, things are sorted out. Decided it was a good shot, gun was not taken, they didn't shoot my dog, etc. Got a nifty little piece of paper for court if I needed it. Cops loaded my dog and two others into their cars and drove us to the vet.

The two guys in the truck must've taken off pretty quick as they were no where to be found. Unlikely they ever will be as they were spanish speakers from reports...

Anyways, vet bill was over a grand with no recourse (again, when it rains it pours)... but I love my dog. To this day he's still the sweetest most loyal dog I've ever owned. He doesn't suffer with any emotional trauma and gets long wtih all other animals great.

I don't know. I'm still a little confused too with the different laws, etc.. This happened in a "dog park" and not on a common or public street. And I had a bunch of witnessess...

I'm assuming if I had been walking my dog down a public street and something like this happened, I would've caught hell and would probably be missing a gun and my dog right now...

If I shoot a cat (lynx, cougar, mountain lion, etc) while hiking, the Rangers can say good shoot as I was protecting myself. Attended a movie last night, theater has No weapons signs, but it's small print and hard to find with all the other "stuff" around there.

Was watching the movie when a group of 10-12 teens came in, causing a scene, some lady told them to shut up. They didn't comply and she ended up moving seats.

This continued, another fellow got up (I got up too as his backup) and he let them have it. Shut up or it's over.

They didn't comply, he went and got the manger, and I kept an eye on the punks. Manager arrived and removed the whole gang. I pointed out a few others that separated from the group to escape being ejected. :)

Now, had this gone bad? If they Had a knife or other weapon, are they waiting for us outside? Needless to say, kept an eye on everything on the way back to the car...

Movie was "RED", and was pretty good.

Its a trespass violation. So if you have to use it, movie theater could prosecute you for trespass, watch it get published in the media and receive the biggest backlash of their entire operation.

Unless you f' it up and hit an innocent or something.

This. These signs mean little more to me than comedic relief and a reason to take my business else where next time (or that time if it's not too much of an inconvenience at that moment).

I try not to give business to this theater, I go a couple times a year for a movie, but opt out other times during the year when the wife and kids go. Unfortunately I believe all the theaters in the area have similar signs or rules. It is a decent newer theater and I like to keep my money in the city I live. Others that are close are not in the city limits or too busy. It is what it is.

I chambered a round that I reloaded, in my basement, and with my finger OFF the trigger, it fired as soon as the bolt closed. Richocheted off the concrete wall and went right past my leg and into the couch.

After the intial shock, I got so mad at the gun, I took it in the garage and cut it into pieces with an acetelyne torch.

Thank god I was the only one home at the time, and I had the gun pointed in a safe direction.

That was an AD, not an ND. Good for you for obeying the four rules.

I believe the year was 2004. I was living on the west side of Colorado Springs with just me and g/f in a old Victorian style house that had been made into about 7 apartments. Our little studio apt. had the only door that was on the outside of the house by the street. It was new years eve night or probably new years day by then. Our bed was right by the front door and at about 2am this really drunk or drugged out guy started banging to high hell on it . Screaming let me in you bitch..open the door ..I'm gonna f**k you up. My XD used to hang on the wall in the holster next to the bed. How i ended up at the front door with it in .001 seconds is beyond me. (I wish I had surveillance back then)

So I start yelling back thru the door, You got the wrong house guy stop bangin on my door. But this only made him get even louder and started bangin harder. As I"m lookin thru the peep hole I can tell he's got a pocket knife in his his hand . So I told him if you break this door your gonna get shot! So he starts stabbing the door sayin shoot me then bitch . By this time the g/f has 911 on the phone and she hands it to me and the dispatcher is asking me whats goin on. And she can hear him bangin on my door and she asks me is it locked and I'm like yeah if it wasn't we'd be talkin about this dead guy. By this time he's bangin so hard on the door with his shoulder i can see him thru the crack of the door. The dispatcher said all their officers are on other calls but as soon as they get freed up they'll be on there way to my apt.

So there I am drawin down on the door yellin at the guy to stop and talking to the dispatcher. And I tell her it looks like he's gonna break the door open and he has a knife. If he opens this door i'm gonna shoot him. So she starts tryin to talk me outta shootin the guy and right about then the banging stops. He must have seen the lights and ran or something because they never caught him. That was my closest ever, it came so close I think about it all the time.

Two weeks later the g/f was babysitting two of our friends kids during the day while I was at work. And I get a frantic call that someone just broke into the house while they were watching t.v. and saw them.. and ran back out the door. When I got to the house the cops had already left , but there were pieces of wood from the door all over the ground from the crow bar the guy used to pry it open. I've always wondered if it was the same p.o.s that I almost shot that night. We moved that week.

I've never had to shoot an American.

The closest I came to shooting someone was when I was in college. My soon to be wife and myself had an appartment with two other friends. It was a first floor deal in a large brick victorian right on the riverfront (Lock Haven, PA). Our front door was broke and when it was locked if you grasped the knob hard enough and turned it...the door would come open. We had told the landlord and he said he'd get to it next week. About two days later we had finished dinner and all racked out. We woke up to our roomate screaming and then yelling "There's someone in the house". I grabbed, of all things, a FN PS90 I had just bought and was laying out of the safe, and stepped into the hall. I yelled that I had a gun and whoever was in the house had 10 seconds to leave. Immediately I see a man running straight at me. It was dark and I couldn't see his hands. I really didn't know what to do so I shouldered the rifle and stepped back into my room, making the decision that since I was blocking his escape route to the front door I would only fire if he turned and proceeded into our bedroom. He continued straight and after he ran past I stepped back into the hall and held steady on him until he exited out our front door. My wife called the police and I stood guard at the door. Mind you...this is a very small city. I worked and lived at the fire department for the two years prior and the police would always stop at McDonalds and then walk across the street to the station and watch TV until something came up. After about 35 mins the police finally showed up with fries on their breath...(I'm not anti-police...I'll probably be a state trooper some day...but these guys were your typical "Keystone Cop"). Frustrated I asked what took them so damn long only to get the typical "We responded as soon as we could." They asked what happened and then drove around for a few minutes, didn't find anyone and drove back to our place. After asking a few questions they left and nothing else came of it.

What happened was someone came in through the broken door and went to one of our roomates bedrooms. He climbed on top of her and when she woke up she hit him with her alarm clock and began to kick him. He got up and exited her room and ran for the door shortly after. Our best guess is that he was drunk but we don't know what happened for sure. I filed a complaint with the PD because of their response time.

Lessons learned:

-Don't rely on the police. While they are helpful in most cases you can't expect them to be there when you absolutely need help. You are your own first line of defense.
-Always carry a good flashlight. You can get some pretty small and bright Surefire flashlights these days. I carry one clipped into my weak side pocket and have a pocket knife on my strong side. I have an extra in the truck and a few throughout the house. There's nothing like not being able to identify a threat when it's dark. The man who broke into our house was almost shot because I couldn't see what was in his hands (and that was my fault)
-Know your laws...in PA there is no Castle Doctrine. I had a duty to retreat if possible. I was able to retreat back into the bedroom. If I would have shot him in the hall I would have faced some legal difficulties. If he had turned into our bedroom instead of continuing straight to the front door I would have been in the right to shoot him in the eyes of the Commonwealth of PA. I wasn't thinking about retreating to the bedroom because I was legally obligated to when it was all going on...it just seemed like the best move at the time.
-Have a weapon sufficient for self defense. I'm not trying to start a 5.7 debate, but I personally don't feel that it's a viable self defense round. I had better options available but they were locked in a safe. The next day I set out a 12ga with #00 Buck and a flashlight. I should have already done that.
-Have sufficient security in your home. I should have demanded that the landlord either replace the door knob immediately or I should have bought one myself. It all would have been prevented if he had not been able to make it into the house to begin with.

Saw a guy at the pawnshop today take a $10, .22 revolver and stick it to the forehead of the guy behind the counter. They were BS'ing before hand and apparently know each other, and the guy behind the counter was moving some guns around in the display case or something.

I just looked at the one guy, with a "Not Amused" look on my face and he made some jokes about cameras and the police might be watching etc.

Stupid people. I really just can't believe he did that. I think I shall contact the store owner about that.

I've actually considered walking into a "joke" situation like that and drawing down on/shooting someone that was only messing around. It scares me. People don't know that I'm carrying a gun, so they would have no reason to suspect that their "Crazy Terrorist at the office" prank could get them killed. Like a Candid Camera nightmare.

Only way it could be an AD is if the firearm malfunctions, like a slam fire. Anything involving finger on the trigger or the hammer is an ND.

Right. Or if it's laying n a table loaded w/o anyone within 25' and just goes off by itself. Thankfully, none of that stuff happens very often and as long as you are following the rules of safety then nobody gets hurt.

I saw an SKS slam fire at the range the guy loaded up the mag and let the bolt go(finger off the trigger) and it fire 4 rounds pretty fast. Turns out the firing pin had some old oil or greese and it got stuck and he did not clean it very good so it went full auto so to speak

Failed to keep his weapon in proper firing order, lack of maintenance. This is NOT an accident.

Improper maintenance falls into the category of negligence... not accidental. Gun safety includes properly maintaining and inspecting your firearm before use.

I've got a couple.

I lived in 5 points when I was in my early 20s. One night someone tried the knob on the back door. I couldn't believe the adrenaline dump as a ran to the bedroom and grabbed my Mossberg and racked a round into the chamber. He/she/they didn't come in. I sat there for a long time before I calmed down enough to open that door and have a look around. Seems this wasn't the first time. When we moved in there was a card board hand written sign on the back door that read "Next time I'll be ready" and had a crudely drawn handgun on it.

One night walking down 16th street mall some black dude gets in step behind me and says something like "Just keep walkin' or I'll cut your white ass." or some such thing. At the time I carried a .40 Sigma in my shoulder bag. I jammed my hand in the bag and got a grip on the gun, then stood aside. But he must of felt the vibe and just walked by. Again my heart was going about a million beats per minute.

Had some guys in a truck eyeballing my wife and I while driving home one night. They started following us, so I took a left into a strip mall, pulled over and pulled out my G26 and put my hand on the door handle. My wife and son were in the car, so I figured I'd exit and keep my family out of any crossfire. Fortunately they kept driving.

Walking my dog with my (then) 8 or 9 year old son on the powerline trail that splits the neighborhood with backyards on either side. This one wooden fence is missing part of 2 of the slats at the bottom and this big ass Rottweiler jams his head through as we walk by. The dogs jerks around like mad, barking like crazy and gets one front leg through trying to get to (presumably) my dog. I'm trying to get my son behind me, control my dog (who wants to kill his new adversary), keep moving and draw my G26 in a panic. I figure I have a couple seconds before this thing is charging us and I'm going to try to shoot a small target moving 30MPH. I hadn't secured my holster to my belt, because 'Hey we're just going for a walk in the park' right? And the whole things comes out. Fortunately I was able to get us down the path far enough that Cujo relaxed and I had my pistol properly unsheathed.

All learning experiances, and all times I was very glad to have a gun with me or nearby. Be safe, be armed.

As a matter of semantics, is it "coming close to shooting some one" if the first shot is a near miss?
That is to say, if the person does get shot shortly there after, does the 'close' count in this thread?

Just curious as to the rules.

I almost shot my maid this morning when she woke me up to tell me she was prego again. J/k
The closest I've come to shooting someone I didn't have a gun. Or I would have shot the crackhead and raped his GF.
ETA: He ran me over with his car and I was dragged for 40 feet under it. 25 stitches on the back of my head more on my back and buttox not to mention the road rash and bruises to the bone. And ever since then I have had back pain like a 90 year old wrestler. Yeah, if only I could have shot his ass I wouldn't be in pain and almost killed and the gene pool for the human race would be better off with out him.

The closest I've come to shooting someone (that doesn't involve an active war zone) was probably when I was about 13. I was pheasant hunting with my Dad and some men he worked with. I was walking about 15 yds in front of the line (Didn't have enough bird dogs I guess..) when I had a bird flush right at my feet and executed a hard 180 degree turn. I raised my shotgun while tracking the bird and came within inches of sweeping the entire line before I realized what I was about to do and depressed the muzzle again. My dad gave me a "if you'd have shot me I'd have whipped the dog piss out of you" kind of look but left me alone to let the lesson sink in.

Lesson learned - Target fixation kills. It may be you or it may be someone else but it kills. Maintain situational awareness at all times when you have a gun in your hand.

My only close call was December 2001. I was leaving the Northridge mall in CA with bags in hand. It was closing time and middle of the week so not a lot of people still around. As I was walking toward my truck I saw someone cutting through the cars toward me. He looked like a typical L.A. gangbanger with big raiders jacket and hat on. As he got into the same aisle I was walking in I reached under my coat and drew my S&W model 60. I let it hang to my side just in case. As I got closer I could see him take a deep breathe and start heading my way. I also noticed he looked up and past me like he was looking at someone or something else. When he got to about 30 feet from me his eyes got big as can be. He turned and ran off. At that point I turned and saw his partner that was approaching from behind. He was about 30 feet behind so I raised my snub to my chest and asked if I could help him. He took off in the same direction as idiot 1. Now Iknow that concealed carry is a no no in CA without a permit. Its also impossible to cet a permit in L.A. county. I am convinced to this day that if I didnt have my snub on I would have been robbed and maybe worse. When I got home and told the wife what happened she finally understodd why I carry .

There's a Pizza Hut a couple miles from my house. Wife went out to getbthebcar warmed up while I paid the bill. When i went up to the front of the store, I noticed that her car door wasn't closed. There was a homeless looking guy holding the door open and asking my wife for money. I postured up and told the guy that we weren't. Note rested and to have a good night. He took one step towards me and told me I didn't need to be rude. I cleared my shirt over my G17 and tested my hand on the grip so he could see. I again told him to have a good night and please move along.

Target at 300yds. Shooting my 22-250 on private land by the moffat tunnel. Trespassing hippie mountain biker comes out of nowhere through the trees right in front of the target. Bullet must have passed through his spokes. He didn't even stop. We chased him down and explained how close he came to being worm food. He didn't care 1 bit. Gave him 10 min to gtf off our property before he got a beat down or the Sherrif was called. He peddled his ass off the property. By private I mean he had to lift his bike over 3 locked and signed gates and fences.

2 times when I lived in Las Vegas, one time some drunk walked into my living room and sat down in my recliner while me and the wife were getting ready to go out. From the sound of the door, the footsteps then the squeak of the chair I knew it was one person and where he was, I thought about grabbing the shotty but thought no it would be funner to beat him unfortunately he was to fast to catch.

I jogged every night like 10pm when I was in the DEP after my night school at the community college. I always carried a Springfield mil spec 1911. One night when running down Flamingo by the Gold coast some shits drove by and shot me with a paintball gun, at first I thought it was real from the pain and the splatter at night haha. Right after they shot me the stop light turned red about 20 yds away and traffic was so busy they couldnt go anywhere. I bet they never pulled that shit again, we had a little come to god style meeting.

Other then active duty...

At work, I was a contractor for Comcast doing an install at some apartments in Fort Collins. When I walked in I seen the Beretta 92 and a bunch of knives on the floor by a sleeping bag. I didn't think much of it because most people I know keep a gun by the bed and I figured he was just moving in and didn't have furniture yet. While hooking up the cable and internet he started telling about his wife running off with some dirt bag, she turned his kids against him, and the final nail was identity theft. That's when he started waiving the gun around and going ballistic! He said they cleaned out everything he ever had and more. He bought the gun recently (not a gun guy) to protect himself because he thought it was his wife hiring people to do him in. I wasn't sure I would make it out of there before he went completely off the deep end!

Their have been a couple times working in greeley that customers (gangsters) had shown some firepower, but nothing really scary. I had the swat team show up at a job i was at a couple years ago. I had a guy go ballistic at some apartments a couple weeks ago and start kicking in doors but he didn't have a gun, 911 sent the fire dept instead of the cops do to his history of mental health problems?

My 2nd wife and I stopped to take a leak at a rest stop in Michigan on our way home after we got done shooting a wedding(I am a photographer) at about midnight. I wnr into the mens room and was in midstream when I heard someone come out of the stall and walk behind me. I then heard him say something, I couldn't quite hear him so I said "what?" and turned my head into an old revolver sticking in my face, he said don't turn around and give me your money. I reached into my pocket and gave him my $7 I had. He ran out and jumped into a car and took off. I could tell what sort of car it was by the tail lights. We called the cops and told them what happened. They caught them about 2 hours later after they were observed at a gas station with three of them standing around the gas tank in the car. they saw the cops and took off with their lights off, of course the cops didn;t like that and chased them until they crashed. They called me at about 3:30AM to have me come down to look at some articles of clothing they were wearing, I IDed them as what I saw him wearing. I never got nervous, for some reason i just didn;t affect me like it should have. Funny thing is this was in Jackson MI. and they were from Kalamazoo and wanted to go to Chicago in a stolen car from Kalamazoo. They went about 100 miles the wrong way east on I-94 instead of west towards Chicago. Dumb shits!

Back when I lived in Minnesota I had a friend that lived in North Minneapolis aka the ghetto... gangland.. whatever you want to call it, definitely no where I have been in Denver comes close to it. We stopped at his place on New Years Eve to pick a few things up while on our way up to Duluth to party. We were walking out to his truck in the alley and heard a bunch of shots to our right and looked over and about 4 houses down was a group of (use whatever term you like) shooting their guns at something.. I'm sure they were not shooting at us and likely didn't see us but it scared the shit out of us anyway.

That's about it though..

I'd say the closest was when I was between the bad guy shooting at the Adam's County Deputy .... and him shooting back .. me in the middle ... Scared the crap outta me . heard the bullets flying both ways just over head as I dove behind cover.

1. Nickel-plated Baretta 92 put to my forehead when I was 19 while being threatened. Never thought for a minute that the guy was going to shoot me, but it was still unpleasant.

2. Friend of mine had an AD while hunting pheasants when I was 14. Close enough to feel the rush of air go by my face. I stopped hunting with him.

Was shot by my brother twice. Once with a Co2 pellet gun in the chest and the other was with a bow and arrow. Took a arrow in the chest as well. Luckily it was a long bow and we where real young and he couldn't pull it back all that much. Still got the scar from the pellet.

After writing this I think I owe him some payback...[013]

Been shot 2 times bird hunting. 1 pheasant, 1 dove. Not point blank but close enough to draw blood. And almost had my head taken off dove hunting from a hunting partner not paying attention. I ducked as he swung. [fudd]

6 years ago, sitting in the drive-thru with my ex up in Englewood. Homeboy comes swaggering up to the counter, holding his crotch, evidently there to see one of the girls working. Makes eye contact with me and does the whole arms-spread-out "you lookin' at me?" pose. I don't have the slightest idea why. Obviously he was threatened into an extreme state by the nerdy white kids buying ice cream sundaes. We just ignored him and continued paying for our meal. As I'm beginning to pull forward, Tupac decides to walk out in front of my Jeep and start for the passenger side, cussing and yapping like a 5 foot terrier. I maintained eye contact, pulled out my para .45, and rested my hand holding it on the steering wheel. He veered off course, acted like he was walking in a different direction all along, and stood by the side of the building until we left.

Of course, my very liberal ex had some admonishment about how situations like that don't happen if you "put enough positive energy out into the universe". There are good reasons why she's an ex. :-)

Back in the day when I was young and full of, well ya'll know. I was an LEO for a railroad back in the east. Details not important. But I was in a SIU and we worked surveilences when trains stopped to do what they do, change crews, or set off a load or two.. SOmetines we would hide in ditches in the projects or sometimes it would be weeds near a bridge. Nonetheless, radio communication sucked and backup was sketchy... Many times my sidearm was shoved into a perps ear, nose, anywhere to get the point across because me and my partner never knew who was out in the darkness and we needed to control the situation. I never had to shoot at anyone.

The only real time I've ever come *this* close to shooting another human being was while on ECP ASOG duty in a tower overlooking our Entry Control Point in Afghanistan. Without too many details (including the entire conversation between myself and the SOG) that I'd rather not discuss- I'm going to be honest, I knew I could do it, but I really didn't want to unless I had to, and frankly I was scared shitless... We had a water truck attempt to enter our FOB, the gate guards saw it coming and reported it as being suspicious as the gate closed for the night in 15 min. As soon as the description went out over our comms we immediately got a report that it matched a vehicle on the BOLO list for a VBIED (Vehicle Borne IED)- a water truck with a 2500 gallon water tank on it: bricks were at present being shat. The gate guards halted the truck and the driver did not have any authorization form to enter the base as a LCN service vehicle. Our SOG immediately informed me to "go red" and man the M240B machine gun in my tower. I brought the weapon up and trained it on the driver. My orders from the SSG were to "Stitch the motherfucker up" if he did anything threatening or if given the go order. One gate guard trained his weapon on the driver, while the other guard got on the radio for a interpreter. The stand off probably lasted about 4-6 minutes with my finger hovering just outside the trigger guard of my 240. The interpreter and 5 QRF soldiers arrived and commenced to detain the driver and attempt to figure out who he was. Turned out to be a false alarm and the driver had received bad instructions from his employer and lost his paperwork. He was barred from ever entering the FOB. That few minutes of being ready at the drop of a hat to put the driver down was perhaps the most intense, frightening, and sobering experience I've ever had... especially since we feared he might have God knows how many lbs of explosive in the truck that potentially could have wiped my entire 5-man ECP team out.

To this day part of me is very thankful I didn't have to fire... but another part of me- I don't know if I should feel bad or what for this- wishes I would have gotten the chance to kill an insurgent.

I don't have any, but my father has been shot three times. All by his dad, on separate occasions. For some reason my grandpa enjoyed chasing my father and his siblings off the porch with his .22 revolver in hand, shooting at their feet. My dad has three .22 scars on his legs from three different occasions, just because my pa thought it was entertaining to shoot at his kids (who he didn't claim) feet. No wonder he is a hard ass!

2. Deer hunting in ND, a couple of rounds went over our heads - a Hell of a lot closer than I would have liked
3. Elk hunting on a ranch here in Colorado several years ago. I couldn't find a hole deep enough to dive in when the dumbasses the next hill over tried to shoot an elk that was farther away than they thought. They claimed they never saw us even though we had on orange from the waist up.
4. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Jul 4 1996, our bus took some small arms fire when we were headed back to Eskan Village from the flight line. There's really no place to hide on a bus!

I jog primarily at night, and I actually have worried about this exact thing happening to me. I always just wonder if I would realize I wasn't being shot by real bullets in time.

Never come that close. While I've been ready (hand in the pocket on my pocket carry) to draw, I've never been put in a situation where I've had to. I guess the closest would be a couple of guys approaching me at the gas station while filling up... asking for money. Situational awareness picked up on them from a distance and before they could get close... one hand went in the pocket to grab the grip on my pocket carry and the other hand pointed right at them while I looked them in the eye and said pretty firmly "You should stay over there because I've got nothing you would want over here!" They got out a "hey man, can we borrow..." before they stopped their approach, turned around and walked away.

Other than that, I've never been close to shooting someone. I suppose I wasn't even close then... just making sure I kept it that way.

1989, Berlin. Newbie in the radar shop, they sent me out to the radar to conduct some PMIs, but thought it would be funny not to tell me there was a new cypher lock combination. The alarm went off, and i turned around to have an M-16 muzzle jammed into my belly by an MP that was not only excited, but was not old enough to shave.

That was the first time I finally understood the phrase "...my guts turned to water."

I guess I wasn;t in real danger, but that kid was REALLY excited about an alarm going off on his shift.

I didnt know this forum is full of rambos! I am one of the fortunate ones that has not really experience crazy stuff. In 1992 Korean Town, LA, I heard zings and bullet impacts - in 1998 muslim riot in jakarta, I saw a student was burned alive, and some random shooting on the streets through out the night from my hotel room. That's as far as personal experience I had w/ 'getting shot at.'

Sitting around a campfire at hunting camp and a relative of a buddy of mine was fondling a .357 mag revolver, it magically went off and shot the dirt out from under one of my feet. I swear to god I felt the bullet graze my shoe. He just about had that revolver for dinner that night, and I stayed as far away from him as possible for the rest of the trip.

And on the last day of that trip, my buddy was pulling a lever action .44 mag rifle from behind the seat of his dad's truck while his dad was on the other side pulling his rifle out. The boy's rifle went off and shot his dad right above the belly button at pretty much point blank range. The dad lived, but only has a portion of his liver, kidneys, and stomach left. He found out just how bad stupid hurts that day. I imagine both rifles had a round in the chamber. Jesus, if my dad ever caught me with a round chambered in the truck, he'd probably shoot me is damned self!

Needless to say, I've never been hunting with them again. My buddy and I were about 13 when this happened.

This is part of the reason I hunt alone 99.99999% of the time now.

I had a white trash ex-stripper girlfriend when i was in my 20's. We were at her parent's trailer house and went into one of the bedrooms so that she could do some school work. She was trying to get her GED. (She never did get it, which somehow was my fault. I never did understand that one.) I fell asleep and woke up to loud voices. She goes running out, I put my shoes on and then follow her. When I came running out the front door I found myself to be the center of attention of 8 Denver cops with their drawn hand guns all spinning to aim at me. The must have just gotten out of the class for threat identification because I didn't get shot. I guess they were a bit surprised when a 6'8" guy came bursting out the door. They grab me and tell me to get on my knees with my hands on my head. One cop is holding my hands on top of my head with his left hand and his right hand on the but of his now holstered pistol. My girlfriend is running around us yelling at the cop telling him that he's hurting me. I tell her to shut up and that he is just doing his job. I could feel the cop relax when I said that. Eventually, after they searched the trailer, he let me up and said that they got a call saying that there was a hostage being held in the trailer at gunpoint. It's just a funny white trash girlfriend story now, but I'm probably lucky I didn't get shot.

I had some gang bangers chase me downtown when I was a kid and show me the guns in the waist bands that they wanted to shoot me with. Also got cut off and had to lock up the brakes on my old Buick and some very helpful police officers decided it was best to come up to the car with a shotgun drawn to give a 17 year old kid 12 points of tickets for it.

Personally, the closest I've came to being shot was by a LEO that I thought was stealing my car. Went up shooting after buying some lasers (which were costly at the time like 04 ish) into death hand canyon. Long story short I left the brights on in my car to illuminate the canyon which was basically pitch black. Car drove up, didn't turn on it's overheads, so basically I thought I was getting jacked at around 10pm which I really wasn't in the mood for. So I walked back towards the car with an AR in the ready position. I had been shooting without ear protection the day before so having actual ear protection in and the previous day made me hear like... Nothing. I actually got past the brights cautiously and found myself face to face with a gun at my head. Once I determined he was a officer (after looking at the car, not his uniform) I simply put up my left arm and slowly lowered my rifle in my right. Then as he issued commands and quickly lowered his firearm I indicated I could not hear him and removed my ear plugs. Everything ended well. He checked our guns to make sure we weren't firing full auto as reported and went on his way. I think there are few thinks that make your butthole pucker like walking around a bright light and then seeing a gun to your head.

I figure we all have some story re: CCW, it'd be cool to see them in one place.

I'll start I suppose..

So back in June, before I even applied for my CCW, I was at Autozone picking up a battery. I was standing in line behind two relatively "normal" Colfaxish Aurora folks in the "I need a part" line. A scruffy looking guy walks in, grabs whatever he needs, and is now the only one in the "I got my stuff, and need to pay" line. One of the Autozone employees goes over to check the scruffy dude out, and one of the guys in front of me start freaking out, about how long they've been waiting, and they "better not check him out first, or else". Now granted, the guys in front of me were in the wrong line to begin with, happens all the time, I get it.. So the employee is checking out the guy who flipped out. Meanwhile the scruffy dude has a folding knife in his right hand, flipping it open and closed repeatedly, meanwhile mean-mugging everyone in the store. My only thought was, "crap it'd be good to have a CCW right now, and I've got a gun in the car for personal protection, but... it's in the flippin' car".. If this dude starts attacking folks, all I've got is this 50lb battery.

Anyway, the first guy left, and then the scruffy dude checked out and left. I wasn't able to get a plate #, it was too dark out, and the dude sped off. Apparently the scruffy dude was a regular, per the Autozone employee.

Let's hear your stories folks!

I was walking home after getting a cup of coffee one morning and had to cut through an alley to get back to my apartment. A rather large person followed me and approached me about 20-30 yards into the alley. The guy got pretty close and said "give it up" and came at me. I reached back for the pistol in my belt. As soon as he saw what I was doing he ran away much faster than I'd expect a man his size could run. While I did get my hand on the grip he was gone before I even touched the pistol.

My morning drive to work takes me through a state park and there's always somebody trying to drive 10 miles an hour in a 35 mile an hour zone to look at the cute deer,coyotes, and pheasants on the side of the road. On this particular morning I was already running 5 to 10 minutes late for work and the car in front of me was doing about 8 to 10 miles an hour. I checked that there was no oncoming traffic and passed him over a double yellow line. As I passed the driver leaned out his window and both the scruffy driver and his 400 lb passenger flipped me the bird and shouted some things about my Mother. I passed them and continued on my way to work until I hit a construction zone with one lane open and a solid red light with a 10 minute wait. I immediately recognized I was going to be stuck there for the next 5 to 10 minutes with the Amish speed asshole behind me. I could not pull forward or U-turn as there was a semi truck in front of me, a steady stream of traffic in the opposite lane, and a ditch to the right I could not traverse, and the tortoise just off my rear bumper. I chamber checked my Glock 19 and holstered it just as the driver of the slow- mobile got out of his car and sprinted towards my driver side door. As the driver approached I mentally made a note of the fact that he had nothing in either hand. He started screaming at me from the moment he got out of his vehicle telling me that I was going too fast and I could've killed children at the speeds I was driving, 40mph, (keep in mind this is a Tuesday morning at about 9 a.m. with no school children in sight.) His eyes were bloodshot and he wad shifting side to side as he continues to curse and shout. (Evidently he bought the bad angry pot) I firmly told him to calm down and to go back to his vehicle. He replied that I should go fuck myself. I told him once again to return to his vehicle and that he ought not to speak to people that he was not familiar with in such a manner. He of course took this in the worst of possible ways and assumed that I was trying to get all tough guy on him, it was comical almost but at the same time I was dreading having to shoot this guy. I made one more attempt to get him to return to his vehicle and he finally slowly turned around and headed back to his warm truck cab and his morbidly obese boyfriend, but only after informing me that I was lucky he wasn't going to his truck and returning with a baseball bat to beat the shit out of me. I told him that it would not be in his best self interest to do that and once he got to his vehicle hevery should stay there. Which he did thank God. About two minutes later the light changed and I was able to move forward, and pull off the road and let him get around me as I wanted his plate #, and did not want him following me to work that morning, or any other morning. I had the adrenaline shakes for about 15 minutes afterwards. Moral of the story;
1. Obey traffic laws!
2. ALWAYS give yourself an escape!
3. Set your alarm early and don't be in a rush to work!

I made one more attempt to get him to return to his vehicle and he finally slowly turned around and headed back to his warm truck cab and his morbidly obese boyfriend, but only after informing me that I was lucky he wasn't going to his truck and returning with a baseball bat to beat the shit out of me. I told him that it would not be in his best self interest to do that and once he got to his vehicle hevery should stay there. Which he did thank God. About two minutes later the light changed and I was able to move forward, and pull off the road and let him get around me as I wanted his plate #, and did not want him following me to work that morning, or any other morning. I had the adrenaline shakes for about 15 minutes afterwards. Moral of the story;
1. Obey traffic laws!
2. ALWAYS give yourself an escape!
3. Set your alarm early and don't be in a rush to work!

Yikes!

Luckily, I haven't had any close calls or confrontations while armed.

I did have an incident a few years back with a thirty to forty-something year old guy who had way too much to drink.

I went out with a group of four girls and was the only guy with them. As the night was winding down near closing time, they were all sitting in a group and the guy and his friend came over and started harassing all of them to come home with him (our whole group was between 21-23).

I was getting the "rescue us" look from across the room so I walked over there and asked if there was a problem.

He said, "fuck off." Then he proceeded to keep harassing them. I stepped up to where I was angled 45 degrees to the front and right of him and calmly asked him to leave us be and we can go our separate ways.
Luckily, he was pretty wasted and I had my faculties so he telegraphed that he was throwing a haymaker with his right fist and swung it in a wide path. I was able to duck back, deflecting his swing back across his body with my left forearm. He was extended so I was able to land a solid right fist to his solar plexus and he went down hard. His friend stepped forward but security was already rushing over so he froze up.

After explaining all that had happened, apparently we weren't the only group that was being harassed by this guy that night. They hauled the guys off and (as I found out after the fact) took copies of their IDs so they could ban them from the establishment.

Since I was the only guy in the group, some of the other patrons offered to walk with us back to the car in case they regrouped outside or found some friends.

I would much prefer if that was my last incident. [LOL]

Oh I don't want the job full time, I've learned over the years if you do TOO good of a job, you may just get the job.

Tell me about it.

The "closest" I've come is having to clear my house a couple of times. We were gone all day and forgot to close the garage door. Came home at 10 pm and the garage was wide open. Had to clear the house, just to be sure.

Second time was we came home and the back sliding door was open. Once again, had to clear the house. The wife just forgot to close it this time around.

Nothing exactly "close" but I was very happy to have my firearm with me when you come home to that.

Doesn't count as a defensive gun use because you didn't kill him, according to the leftists who compile the data. In fact, they'd call it intimidation and want you charged with a crime.

Effing idiots.

I have had two times where I have been in a situation where I needed my CCW.

First one was after a long 36 hour outage at work. Worked 36 hours straight and came home groggy and warn out. For some reason my garage door and door into the house was wide open. I immediately grabbed my pistol and cleared the house. Luckily I live in a good area and nothing happened to the house while I was out. Really throws your game off when you are tired though. Figured I must have left in a panic when I got called into work and didn't take the time to close up the house.

Second one I was in line at a gas station waiting to pay and I noticed a 17-18 year old kid in baggy clothes running down the side walk from the trailer park near by and came barging into the store. He immediately came towards me and the counter where I was waiting for the clerk to come help me and I took a 45 degree step back. I immediately regretted having my CCW in the truck and started contemplating if he does something do I fight, run to truck, or comply. I did not see that he had any weapon of any kind so I initially thought fight. My quickest thought was my S&W spring assist tactical knife in my pocket. I put it in my palm and flicked the safety off. At that very second I made eye contact with him and he stepped back and went to the back of the line. I paid for my stuff and left. Nothing really happened as I watched until he left and went on his way.
Reflecting back I guess I profiled very quickly as he was coming out of a trailer park wearing baggy clothing, then as he immediately tried to cut in between me and the counter when there wasn't a gap really threw me off.

Other than that I am happy to say I have never been in a situation to even go to palm my CCW. [Beer]

About 7 years ago when I was 16 I was up nerding out reading the Divine Comedy. It was roughly 2:30am when I finally turned off the lights and not 5 minutes later I see our motion activated flood lights go off in the front of our house. (my room was right above the garage) Thought it was weird and looked out saw some shadows down below and heard agitated voices outside by the garage door through my open windows. They were trying to slide under the garage since we left it up about 4-5inches at night during the summer. First thing I did grabbed my 12ga from under my bed then called the police. Just finished giving them all the info when the two dipshits proceeded to my pickup with a baseball bat. Saw them check the doors to my pickup and the sliding window on the back. Heard one of them say "F**k it lets just smash the f***ing window!" at this point I proceeded to rack a shell in the chamber as loudly as possible. They turned around, I yelled a command to lay down on the driveway and not move. The guy on the right immediately dropped down but his buddy on his left continued to stand and run his mouth. Had the front bead on his chest as I continued to command him to lay on the ground. He started to walk closer toward the window soon as a two patrol cars showed up. Only after the officers showed up did he follow orders to get down. They ended up getting arrested and linked to several home invasions, theft, along with other crimes. That thank God was the only time I had the business end of a firearm pointed at another human being. Needless to say when my parents returned home from their anniversary trip, I had a good story for them.

That guy is lucky the police showed up I bet.

So is LongArm if this story occurred in Colorado. If I read right this exchange took place with him in his 2nd story window so a lawyer would have a hard time proving he felt his life was in immediate harm's path if he shot the dude for not laying down. Not to start a big ol' debate but it would have been an expensive battle I think at minimum since Colorado doesn't have laws like some other states about protecting personal property with deadly force. Curious what they were charged with since they hadn't even broken anything or broken into anything by the time officers arrived on the scene if I read the story right.

As I read some of these stories (as well as similar threads on other forums) there's been a few where I wonder if the person posting wasn't saved by the fact that they didn't have their firearm on them based on the decisions that they claim they would have made.

Yes this did occur in Colorado and yes I was in my second story room. It could have turned out that way being a shit show with lawyers and what not (which I thank God it didn't come to that). But at the same time unable to determine if the guy had a weapon on his person or if he would have the stones to use it, I didn't feel like taking the chance at the time which is why I commanded him to get on the ground. I know they got arrested for trespassing and attempted burgarly. Had the security camera footage for that.

I recently had a lady bang on my (and many others') window late at night saying that she was being chased by someone. I answered the door holding my pistol in the SUL position. I told her she could hide behind my bushes while I called for help for her. She saw my pistol about the same time that my dog started barking at her and just backed away mid sentence and drifted off down the street to bang on other windows. Within a few minutes a car pulls up to my house, parks in the middle of the street and the guy gets out and starts walking up the walkway. I jump out the door onto the walk, still holding in SUL position. Conversation goes as follows;
Him: I think I saw...
Me: GET OFF MY LAWN! (He backs up to the sidewalk)
Him: I think my girlfriend. ..
Me: There's no one here for you! (At this time my dog is barking her head off and my wife sticks her head out the door and starts yelling that she called the police and they are coming). He notices the pistol, holds his hands in the air, and says,
Him: Hey...I think I'm in the wrong place.
Me: I think you are.

Then he left. The lady came back, and there were two other neighbors outside at that time (she knocked on their windows and freaked them out) talking with me. She said she needed help, then asked for a lighter. While I was putting my dog in the backyard, she told one of them something about being traped in a Craigslist sex ring or something. She was on drugs or something from what I could tell. Police showed up, we gave a description and they went to look for her. She gave an address which we all now know, and I see the car the "boyfriend" was driving everyday since he lives just up the street. I may go talk to him, even though it's been over a month now. I'd rather know everyone, than have enemies.

This is a perfect example of what Jer was talking about in that there were many things I could have done differently, (call the police, listen to my wife, not go outside, listen to my wife, not display any firearms, listen to my wife, etc) but I'm okay with how this turned out. I made a strong, and immediate, show of force that shut everything down immediately. Supposedly, this lady continued to run down the street knocking on windows in the days right after (unconfirmed by me), but she didn't at my house.

TL;DR Lady bangs on window late at night saying she's being chased. I'm concerned that this is a set-up and act accordingly. Dude shows up right after looking for her. I display a show of force which works as intended to get him to leave.

The only time that I ever really needed a gun I did not have it. It was before I really got into guns. I was driving up to Loveland and all the sudden I heard a car honking at me from the shoulder of 287. I looked over and some guy was trying to merge. I never even saw him turn out so I think that his beater low rider was having a hard time getting up to speed and he was trying to pass me. He flipped me off and screamed something in Spanish at me. So I flipped him off and yelled some tasteful lines that I had perfected with my 6 years in the navy. That is when I realized there were four thugs in the car. The guy started trying to force me off the road, and the guy in the back seat was flashing a pistol and pointing it at me. I kept driving swerving around them finally making it down the hill into Loveland. Red light, I ran it. They followed still screaming that they were going to kill me.

I had just gotten out of the military and moved to the Denver area. I did not know where anything was, or really where I was going trying to get up to the VA clinic in Ft Collins. No phone, the gas light was on in my car (chevy cavalier) and I was wearing fucking flip flops. That is the last time I wore flip flops.

On a bright note, that day is when I discovered Jensen Arms. What a way to get your eyes opened. Somewhere around Hwy 34 a cop car pulled out and I gunned it right up behind him. The car following me started to trail back a bit. The police car turned into the shopping center where Jensen Arms is and there was another stopped patrol car there. I parked right next to them. One cop got out and asked me if everything was alright. I told them the story and sat there for a bit until I calmed down while they took my information. I don't know if they ever caught the guys. Lucked out.

Shortly there after I bought a pistol and got my CCW. Like a week after I got my CCW I had to put a deer down and draw on a rottweiler that was attacking me and my sister in-law. I was driving across the state and came up on a accident where a girl had hit a deer and broke its back. It was flopping in the road trying to get off. So I told her to get going and I would take care of it. Then I got to my parents house and while I was unloading my car I hear a neighbor scream something. I looked up to see a 120 lb rottweiler running at full speed toward my sister in-law, who in turn was running straight at me. I grabbed my gun off the front seat lined up the shot and the dog stopped. I hesitated, but probably should have ended that dog right there. The owner came running up and grabbed the dog dragging it back to their lawn. A month or two later the dog was put down because it got out and bit the crap out of the mailman. Having a gun on you is good for a lot more than just the bad guys.

That part I bolded is where you went wrong and where I've changed since I started carrying 24/7 many years ago. Old me (who was actually young and dumb) would have done the same thing. The consequences were never really a concern because I'm a fairly good size fell and have never lost a fight so that's where my mind always went... kicking someone else's ass if they got too big for their britches. I never really thought I could be shot/killed or they could. Once I started carrying I quickly realized that with that comes a great deal of responsibility because if I play a role in the road rage and shit goes down... someone could die. Regardless of if it was their fault or mine or I was charged criminally/civially or not I will always have to know (if I'm the one that lives) that had I not partaken in the douche baggery that person would still be alive. Had you not flipped them off or sad anything and just waved sorry or ignored them completely none of the rest of that story happens and gun not needed. This is the lesson I've learned over the years and I would hope that more of us gun toting folks learn it as well. Every time someone gets shot over some road rage BS it makes us all look bad and it lends credibility to the anti-2A people's insistence that those with guns use them to settle all issues big or small. Not good.

I always enjoy it when people try to merge, do a shitty job at it then get pissed because they didn't get their way.
On a similar note, COS is doing a good job of making long merge lanes on Powers, plenty of time to get into the turn lane or flow of traffic.

A guy ripped off my friends wifes gold chains off her neck at a gas station in South Florida. We got some of the gold back from a crack house, because they were family heirlooms. We found out the guys street name. Later the next night, we went looking for him.We found him and told him we were looking for some powder cocaine. He got in the back seat of the car. He said "turn left". We turned right heading for the police station. He said, "I ain't messing with you white boys! I got a gun!" I was in the passenger seat. I turned around and stuck a snub nose revolver two inches from his nose. I told him to shut up. I told him to put his hands on the ceiling of the car. He complied. I asked him if he believed in God. He said he did. I said "good, you might get to see him tonight".
We pulled into the police station parking lot. Two cops outside talking to each other, so my friend driving the car jumps out and runs over to them. I'm holding the the strong arm robber in the back seat at gunpoint. The cops run over to the car, one cop on each side of me. I have guns pointed at my head from both cops. If they fired I guess they would have shot me and each other. I told them exactly what I was going to do. I pointed the gun at the ceiling of the car, and then laid it on the dash. I put my hands in the air. They grabbed the gun, and the robber. Hour later I was walking out the police station with a brown paper bag containing the bullets and the gun. The detective told me,"wait until the next stoplight before you reload that thing". At the next light, I promptly reload...

Again, moral of the story is taking the law into your own hands is a bad idea & you're lucky when you went looking for trouble you didn't find it. Some gold (heirloom or not) isn't worth dying over. Seeking out bad guys is just a bad idea all around. The idea of CCW is to protect yourself from threats & not to go looking for situations that require defending.

The closest I've come was having a guy knock on my door 930 or 10 asking to use my phone. I made the mistake of answering the door but it would have been hard to ignore as all the lights were on in the house and I was in the front room. I answered the door and the guy started into his story about needing to use a phone so he could call some friends and get a ride. I immediately got a weird vibe from him and positioned myself behind the door and told him to leave, I didn't have a phone that he could use. He argued for a minute before trying to push the door in. I pushed back and started to draw. He saw that movement and booked it. I can't remember ever having as much adrenaline as that moment.

A few nights later I was on the front step smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer when I saw a white S10 come up a side street with it's headlights off. It stopped 50 yards away and I realized that there was the driver as well as 3 guys in the back of the truck. I put my beer down, walked inside, walked across the room with a rifle silhouetted against the window, put the rifle down and resumed drinking my beer. One of the guys in the back yelled that I was a lucky b*tch and they drove off. I don't know if it was connected, have to imagine it was but wasn't a great feeling either way. I definitely could have handled that situation better as well but I was young and woefully dumb.

I had a biker splitting lanes on Hwy 24 just north of I-25 and I saw him just as I was moving to change lanes so it scared the crap out of him. ( I ride and always look into the blind spot ) At the light he came up and started to use his boots on my new car, the man had to have been twice my size and I did not have my gun, I drove this guy right into a Springs police sub station were it was shift change. The poor guy was on his way back from Sturgis to Ca. I did not press charges and he got a ticket and his insurance payed to fix the damage to the car. After words I was glad I didn't have a gun because it would have made things more complicated with police and I would have tried to de-escalate this anyway before using it in anyway.

One time we left the house for several hours and apparently forgot to lock the door. By the time we got home, it had swung open. We have dogs, but this time they were with us. I had to clear the house, and it was terribly nerve racking.

Other than a couple spider sense moments downtown that didn't escalate, I haven't had any other instances.

In 1984 or 85 I was hiking with my girl friend (now my wife) and we were in an area where at the time was sparsely populated, just few mobile homes on remote lots. There was wild life such as coyote, bobcat, puma, skunks, wild dogs in the area so I was packing my 686 on my hip. We are maybe a mile from the trailer in a ravine heading down hill towards the main highway maybe two miles away. Out of nowhere, this really dirty and rough looking man appears behind us maybe 20 feet away, barely made any noise at all but I heard him. I turned around and he stops and demands that I hand over my wallet. I turned slightly to my left, he saw the gun and he fled. When we reached the highway we walked to the little store and asked the proprietor to call the sheriff. When we explained what happened and described the guy, they both knew who he was and told us he would be in jail, again, shortly.

The next time was in 1998 and the area we lived in (Garden Grove) was mostly Hispanic and bordered Little Saigon, lots of gangs. Anyway, the street we lived on was mostly families with teen and preteen children. Idiots would rive way too fast on the street so I started yelling at them to slow down. Some got angry and there were confrontations but never any weapons and I'm pretty big so no one wanted to fight me. Eventually they slowed down. However, I come to find out that my neighbor's stay over boyfriend is a pot and speed dealer for the 17th Street gang. Lots of undesirables start coming into the 'hood late at night and creating disturbances. I confront them and tell them to leave and not come back or I will call the cops. My neighbor tells me to mind my own business and I tell him it is time for him to leave the 'hood. The next day I get home from the store and come out of his house with something wrapped in a dish towel. He is in his yard holding the towel and I can clearly see there is a gun in the towel, my first thought was a Beretta 92. I am standing on my driveway with my truck between us and I have my hand on my 442 in my pocket. I tell him again that he needs to leave and not come back, he is messed up on drugs and he brings danger into the neighborhood. He waves his towel around and screams that I need to leave by tomorrow. He goes back into his house and I go call the cops. Before they get there he drives off. I describe him and the car, they know him as Fat Frank and they have never been able to catch him in the act. Just then he drive by and screams that he will kill me. He did not see the cops until it was too late. He takes off and the police get on the radio, within 5 minutes we can hear on the radio that they have him. No drugs in the car but there was the gun and his registration was expired and he had a suspended license. He went to jail for two years.

On this occasion, when I could see that he had a gun and I knew the things could get out of hand very quickly, my perception sharpened acutely and I was very calm while it was all going down. I knew what might happen and I was ready to take any action needed. I don't want to say the time slowed down, just that I was completely aware of everything around me and even so, I was focused on Fat Frank and new that I was ready and able. It was not until the police left with their report that it hit me and I started shaking and felt a little sick. That night I parked the cars in front of the house as a barricade, stayed up all night and watched. Nothing ever happened after that. In 1999 we moved to CO and I don't live in or go into areas where trouble may be waiting. Trouble can show up anywhere, I just try to be aware and ready.

Had just moved into new house in country. Went out on deck about 7 am. Saw someone about 75 yards away with long gun. Saw guy shoulder gun and fan right to left and then boom. I ducked and heard pellets hit house and felt like I got stung by a dozen bees. Bleeding in a few places I grab 45 and circle around front of house as guy is coming up with shotgun - dumba--. He approaches in clearing and from around corner of foundation I tell him to stop and put down shotgun. He complies apologizing. I approach with 45 behind back. He was bird hunting and didn't think anyone was home. We had a discussion about shooting at houses and up hill. He remarked his daughter mentioned something about from it hunter safety class. Then he tells me he has daughter behind big tree in creek. She finally comes up, white ass a ghost. After I pluck out a dozen pellets from my shoulder and back I learn guy grew up near me in my town home and I know his family. Next morning he shows up with 2 gallons on Vermont maple syrup. Not bad for a few pellets. Thankfully no one got really hurt and that birdshot is not lethal at 75 yards.
