Wondering if he happened across an illegal grow operation or someone running one.

Yes, I wondered about that as well.

Just on the road, riding? Wouldn't this have turned up in their search for him?

He was supposedly riding trails. Not enough info to know where his body was found or if it appeared that he had been moved after he was killed. Given that he disappeared Thursday and wasn't found until Sunday, I suspect he was found on/near a trail, not on/near a road.

Wonder if this is in any way tied in with the screws and nails strewn on the big bike ride a week ago or so?

His body was found partially hidden under brush, branches, leaves type stuff according to the singletracks link in the first post. Sad and damn weird.

If I had to guess - given that the entire town of Palmer Lake was fawning over this guy - is that someone's wife was doing a little more than fawning.

...just a wild guess.

This^^^^ or a gang initiation? Hard to tell what the motive was. Sad story.

Yeah this is not good at all. It makes me wonder sometimes when I am out in the middle of nowhere that crazy sh!t happens when you least expect it. Be safe out there.

^This seems as likely as anything else, messing with a mans wife or money are, historically, great ways to get dead....

I doubt he ran across an illegal grow op, since if that was the case it seems more likely that he would have been dropped in a shallow hole instead of just covered up with some leaves, etc., and I would think something like an illegal grow/crop would be readily visible from the air and flagged during the initial search...

Maintain situation awareness at all times, Glock on the hip for quick-react, and SBR (unchambered) w/ spare mags in the backpack just in case things get really interesting.....

Doubtful. The vast majority of those are in warehouses and residential houses. Not up on Mt Herman. Hard to say what happened until the investigation moves forward.

Some initial versions of the story tried to promote the agenda and imply his death could be the result of unsafe target shooting. Hopefully, that narrative will be completely discredited as more facts are produced.

However, the events do reinforce the concepts of "anywhere, anytime" when one could experience a lethal encounter, and ALWAYS being armed when you are "out and about", even while exercising/recreating.

Is a .38 snub or LCP carried in mountain bike saddle bag going to stop someone from killing you in a targeted attack or gang initiation killing? Maybe, maybe not, but at least you have a tool of resistance that could turn the tables in your favor, or at least cause a break-off of the attack.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating another crime that happened in the same area where mountain biker, Timothy Watkins, was killed.

The sheriff's office says they have gotten reports of a man threatening mountain bikers with a hatchet.

I remember reading about devices found on a trail near Rampart a while back. I think there was a thread here about it. I wonder if there is any connection to that.

On a different note. A friend was loading crude oil off of Chalk Bluffs Rd outside Cheyenne at night and he said someone was throwing rocks at him from the darkness.

I have spent countless hours on some of the wells along Chalk Bluffs Rd, late into the night as well, and there are some weird/strange people there. If you have to go, go prepared.

Perhaps a majority of them are in warehouses, but not all of them.

http://www.kktv.com/content/news/5-acre-marijuana-grow-discovered-in-White-River-National-Forest-448685253.html

5 acre pot grow found in White River National Forest, complete with irrigation system dispensing chemicals to keep wildlife away. This was a big one, but there are lots more out there that aren't nearly as big that the growers will do anything to protect.

This is quickly turning into one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" stories.

Mountain biker myself. I know another mountain biker who was good friends with him and was going to ride with him the day he was murdered, but had to cancel.

Apparently the victim was the nicest person and embodied the spirit of mountain biking. Such a shame.

Not nearly as tragic, but somewhat related. A couple weeks ago, one of my buddies from work was riding (road) near Roxborough. Some guy in an old beat up pickup, ran him off the road, pulled over a hundred or so yards down the road, exited the truck, and began making a mockery of my friend. When my buddy came to (thinks he may have lost consciousness), he tried to chase down the guy on foot, and was able to get a plate, but police said it was invalid. Moral of the story, be safe out there.

Yep they are certainly out there. However, knowing how the industry works (legal and illegal), I just can't see someone having a grow operation on Mt. Herman Rd. Too much traffic. So many better locations to host a grow op.

That said, it seems like a body was found this morning off the Greenland exit. Not too far from Mt. Herman.
