I live in Colorado Springs. Why in God's name is something being accepted in Colorado Springs, trucked to Denver, then departed Denver 4 hours later to be delivered in Colorado Springs "before 8 PM on September 30"?

It's more efficient. Duh.

Don't forget...
The USPS has a .gov mandated/protected monopoly and can't make money.
Idiots are everywhere.

You already said it....Government at it's best.
Honestly though, if you remember the Merlin phone system.....ATT has/had a plant in Commerce City. If your Merlin phone was busted, you had to ship it to Memphis so they could ship it back to Denver to get it fixed. Shipped back to Memphis after repair, and then shipped back to Denver.
The plant was less than two miles from the original shipper location.
The fuk.
etfix a blatant grammar error.
Denver houses one of the enhanced regional scanners the post office uses to clear packages displaying addresses that are on the list.

...but FedEx's hub is in Memphis. :p

Was. Was is Menphis. They're de-centralizing and adding regional hubs. Finally wising up.

Some bonehead sorted it into the wrong bin and it went to Denver unnecessarily.
One of the unplanned benefits of the system is that in many instances a mistake is automatically corrected at next scan(as long as minor mistake) and still meet delivery window(usually big window).
We still get our stuff on time and a WTF moment.
If you're unarmed you are a victim
Would be interesting to see someone with both business acumen/shipping and receiving/transport experience AND networking experience explain the logic from a networking perspective -- there would have to be an analogous understanding, even if imperfect.
My guess would be that it has something to do with the required support infrastructure vs population density. This of course is changing in the Springs, albeit slowly. It might simply be cheaper to truck it up and back down than it is to support an entire processing infrastructure right here.

This would be my guess. Similarly, if I'm mailing a letter to my neighbor down the street, my local letter carrier doesn't do it. Everything goes to Denver and gets sorted and then follows the return stream to my neighbor.

UPS is no better. I had a critical package overnighted to the following address (actual address a different #) for delivery Thursday.
Spec Suite 1234
1234 E Tufts Ave
DENVER, CO 80237.
They said they couldn't deliver because there was no suite listed.
Called them and clarified the suite #. They confirmed and revised the ship-to address. Today tracking still say they can't deliver. Address is legit and I see UPS in the building all the time.
WTF?

Speaking of this type of deal....(USPS) I tried something with a co-worker once albeit many years ago and I wonder if it would still work in today's world. On a piece of paper, I wrote "Hi". Stuffed it in the envelope, with no postage stamp on it........used his address as the return to, and my address as the send to, and dropped into a mailbox.
He received the letter a few days later.

Dang, so you are the one that caused all those increases in postal rates

They put all the data in a computer and this is what it came up with. We are at the mercy of fools.

This one goes in your butt,

Oh, wait....

I see what you did there.
In hindsight, Idiocracy seems like it's being used as a template.
