View Full Version : GSG-5 Who has them?
I have a few questions about them, and I know that I have shot one at one of the shots, but I don't know who's it was.
You mean a store or someone on here?
I had one until recently. What do you want to know?

You sold a GSG-5?!?! [Faint]Why? Is there something in particular you didn't like about it or did you just get bored with it?

I too had one, for about three days. The plastic stock/forearm felt like it would break, the HK style bolt release felt like it would wear down quickly, especially if you slap it down, it wasn't more fun to shoot than any of my other .22s, and I couldn't find any use for it other than the cool factor. For the same coin I'd rather trick out a 10/22, buy a few thousand rounds of ammo and go out for a steak dinner. I shot it once (100 rounds), then traded it to another forum member.
The GSG5 is a very fun gun to shoot, and it does have a certain cool factor to it, but it was too much like a toy for my taste. Having to use a screw driver to take it apart for cleaning just didn't feel right. Even after doing all the recommended aftermarket upgrades (hk push pins, cocking buffer, BCG screw upgrades, collapsible stock, etc) it just never felt like a 'real' firearm to me.
Used to sell GSG-5 guns in Europe, just a few thoughts...
Batteriesnare and mutt pretty much said it : you just can not talk about GSG-5 and MP5 in the same day even they look somehow similar.
GSG-5 is not designed to hard use, and many things will wear out pretty quickly.
GSG-5 looks cool, magazine in fact is pretty good when it is new, but it is really manufactured much more like a Chinese toy than a firearm :(
If you want to shoot, take for example 10/22 and put all bells and whistles on it.
If you want a cool looking .22 lr and you are not gonna shoot it a lot, get GSG-5.

HK has sued GSG so after the end of this year there will be no more of these available for sale new in the US ... so if nothing else they should be a good investment because folks always buy tactical looking stuff :D

Re: Heckler and Koch, Inc. vs. German Sport Guns GmbH, American Tactical Imports, Inc. Civil Action No. 1 : 09-cv-00039-WTL-JMS (S.D. Indiana)
For immediate release,
We are very pleased to report that the litigation filed by Heckler & Koch, Inc. against German Sport Guns GmbH and its U.S. distributor, American Tactical Imports, Inc., together with all counterclaims, has been settled.
The terms of the settlement are confidential to the parties and cannot be disclosed. A dismissal of the above-referenced litigation, and all of the party’s claims against each other, is expected to be filed in the near future.
Attorneys for H&K will be issuing a statement. The attorneys for ATI have already issued a statement announcing the settlement.
Production and importation of the original design GSG-5 ceased as of Oct, 8, 2009 with the signing of the agreement. The remaining inventory now in the USA can be sold by ATI, all distributors and dealers. ATI currently has GSG-5’s in stock.
All sales of the GSG-5 by ATI must conclude by January 31, 2010. ATI will continue to service every firearm that it imports into the USA.
Thank you for your support.

I completely disagree with this, I have shot my GSG-5 In *almost* every steel match we've had down in pueblo. And outside of Ammo & Not cleaning it, I've never had a problem with the weapon itself. If I had to guess How many rounds I put through it this year it probably be around 5000ish. And far be it that I baby it, hell I've probably banged it on wall here and there. Its not a battle rifle so I don't treat it like it, but it will put up with the punishment, I think we just have to many plastic haters here.

Not that I dislike plastic, but I have to agree with those who posted above, it feels like a toy, not a weapon.

That explains it... I have seen them at the store but I have never handled one.

I do not think myself as plastic hater, but there is plastic and then different plastic ;)
I think, each and every .22 lr firearm will go 5k rounds with flying colors, if not abused.
Unfortunately, I saw some GSG-5:s to break in less than 10k rounds. Charging handle, buttstock, trigger group, magazines etc.
I should propably be more exact about what I mean...
"Shooting a lot" for me is something I used to do with my CZ V22 for couple of years, from 2005 to 2007. All shooting combined, it had mileage of something between 65 and 70 kilo rounds in 2 years. No broken parts except one mag, just changed all springs couple times and cleaned ~100 times in ultrasonic cleaner. Looks pretty ugly, but works still ok :)

Not really a plastic hater, plastic is fine so long it is good quality. My XD9 is plastic and I love it. The GSG-5 works as well as any .22, but as Hannu said it just doesn't feel like it was designed for long term durability. GSG basically used their airsoft product as a basis for a .22lr rifle and when you look at the guts, it shows. After 4 months of upgrades and tinkering, I realized it just wasn't for me. It is still a way cool looking rifle, just wish it was made better.
I like to shoot the GSG-5, But I don't want one. The one I have is not mine, I'm just trying to do some work on it. A few questions;
1) Did any of you have one with a side folding stock? The one like the MP5PDW stock?
http://www.americantactical.us/images/GER202262.jpg
2) If so, was it loose?
3) How long was your barrel?
I replaced the handguard and stock with actual HK furniture, and it feels so much nicer...

I own one, have about 500 rounds through it.
1. Don't like having to clean it, did it this last weekend and it took about an hour to break it down, clean it and assemble again. will be quicker next time, but wasn't as easy as other 22's.
2. Plastic stock is splitting where it fits on the receiver, the seam is coming apart, I will have to put on some 5 minute epoxy inside to keep it from continuing to split.
3. The screw holding the bolt stop plate? on was loose when I took it down for cleaning. I'll have to watch and see if this continues.
4. The set screw on the bottom of the barrel by the receiver was really loose, the barrel was loose because of this, had to tighten it back down.
Not sure if these problems were just not handled at the factory or if they are coming loose due to use?
Shoots good, tends to jam a little if not using plated ammo or high enough velocity. Seems accurate, fun for the kids and others to blast the crap out of tin cans and other misc. items. Mag dumping 24 rounds is fun...
Bought it for the Cool looking factor and keep the kids and friends entertained cheaply.
Kc.
Screws coming loose on the GSG-5 is common. Once I took it apart for cleaning and found the bolt stop screw just rattling around inside. The primary mechanisms in firearms shouldn't he held together with screws...
The fix for this problem is to replace all the soft factory screws with well-made bolts and nuts you can actually torque down. rrages.com sells a kit for this. If you're planning to keep it for awhile, do this upgrade. Otherwise make sure you check and tighten all screws on the rifle everytime you clean. If you don't you'll risk bolt failure.
Another must have upgrade is the hk push pins. Those stupid screw-in-screw things GSG-5's come with from the factory are pain and will strip eventually. HK push pins make it much quicker to tear down. Then you only need a screwdriver for the bolt stop to take your BCG out. Again, rrages.com has these.
Yep, replace the screws in the bolt assembly, and secure them with blue threadlocker.
Buy the bolt buffer so that if you do the HK slap (I think that was the sole reason I bought mine), that it wont damage the buffer tube.
Also buy the push pin upgrade.
Hell, you can buy most all the must-haves from www.rrages.com

What do you mean by the stock being loose? Is it loose where the stock attaches to the receiver assembly? Shouldn't be. Or are you talking the hinge where it folds?
If you have the rifle version with the fake can, then it's 16in. I'm not sure about the length of the pistol variants or the SBR version.
I like my gsg5 for what it is. something to plink with. I put the navy pictogram lower on mine(from an airsoft gun lol), and an aimpoint ml2 I had laying around. Everytime I take it shooting its fun and everyone loves it. what do you want for $450?

thanks everyone for all the tips and tricks on the gsg. I'm not sure if I'll do all the upgrades to mine with stocks and pins and stuff... like CareyH said, it is what it is, fun little plinker and if I have to tighten the screws now and then, guess it'll do.
The screw set is almost a necessity. The factory screws can strip out (mine almost did the first time I took apart the bolt) and they have a tendency to back out under fire and jam up the assembly.

Where the stock assembly attaches to the receiver. It's a little loose and I did know if that was normal on these things.

Well if it's really loose, I'd say that stock's endcap isn't molded to spec and you should send it back to ATI for a replacement. If it has just a little wiggle, then I wouldn't worry about it. A few strategically placed felt pads inside the endcap may enough to firm it up.

Ridge is right, those factory screws used on the receiver halves and the BCG are a failure waiting to happen. Replace them if you plan to keep your rifle for the long haul. It takes about 30 minutes.
As for the HK pushpins - do it. They make taking your gun apart a few second operation and add an authentic look. And let's face it, the primary reason people buy this is the MP5 look. Last I noticed HK gear used push pins, not crappy screw-in-screw assemblies.
And the cocking tube buffer is another really good idea. The reason for it is to prevent to cocking tube handle from slamming into the receiver housing. People have reported their handles breaking off. The cocking tube buffer prevents this.
Enjoy it, they are fun and cool looking.

Ok. I'll look into the screw set and push pins. You've talked me into it. :) Anyone know if these are available from vendors at Tanner? I'll be going tomorrow...
what do you want for $450?
Would you pay $450 for a hand gun that threatens to fall apart every time you try to clean it?
I'll be at tanner, myself...you should be able to find a couple, but I'd expect them to go up in price, due to the fact they are no longer importing them...

Maybe. But I wouldn't pay more than rrages.com charges:
push pins: 12.50
screw kit: 12.50
cocking handle buffer: 15
Those prices include shipping and he ships pretty fast. The buffer is the only thing that's iffy. I hear you can get what you need from a local lowes/home depot for a few bucks.

what do you want for $450?
A Glock usually fits the bill well, Ruger 22/45, Browning Buckmark, Ruger Single Six, decked out 10/22, Remington 700.....Plenty.

A S&W MP15-22 which is what I paid yesterday. [Beer]
I guess I should have been more specific with my 450 comment. if you want a mp5 type gun to take out and plink this is a good choice. or you could buy a real one for 20k and get a .22 conversion for it(dont know if they make one but I would assume so). then you dont have to tighten up the screws. everyone wipe your tears, sorry to hurt you lil feelings.
I have burned a few thousand rounds through mine and never had the srcews back out or the gun fall apart in my hands. you do have to clean them every 500 rounds or so but that better than my marvel conversion for my 1911 that needs to be cleaned every 100rds.
my gsg has not fallen apart yet but I guess mine is the only one.
