Aside from his political views, he had some good music. Based on the news, sounds like he was dead when they found him but hooked him up to life support anyway.

Been consistently listening to his music my entire life and was lucky enough to see him in concert a couple months ago. The devil must have been out last night. Tough day. Rest In Peace Tom.

It may be too soon. Sounds like he's "clinging to life".

I saw him live twice in the '80's in Austin, one of those shows was with Bob Dylan. Cool cat. RIP.

Considering he's been declared dead twice, that's a record.
RIP Tom Petty
He was a family friend a long time ago, and Full Moon Fever was a good portion of the soundtrack to my childhood.

I am saddened at their passing. People like Tom Petty and David Bowie...it doesn't seem like there are modern replacements.

Mr. Petty made some pretty good music that has stood the test of time for sure....and I know he gave the industry the proverbial Finger more than once due to their shyster tactics and demands.

Today in my office we are listening to The Pretenders, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Boston, Huey Lewis and the News, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel. My crew picked out the albums for the day.

Meh. No such thing.
That's how I feel about it. The only time I see this as an accident, is if a person has some unanticipated adverse reaction to medication. If you're managing your healthcare, you have your doctors informed of everything you're taking and you're preferably going through a single pharmacy. They'll know if there may be a drug interaction. If you care about your health, you'll also check on your own about any interactions or side effects. Petty was likely taking meds in excess of prescribed dosing...which was a red flag that he should seek medical attention.
I really doubt it was an accident in that the dosages taken were unintentional. Performers and such tend to the extremes. I do know it is easy to accidentionally take more of something because you think you haven't taken any when you aren't used to taking medications. I learned I need to set out a weeks worth at a time and then I can see what is left for the week and know if I have or haven't taken the daily dose. I don't see this as the case here. He was probably intentionally taking more.

Did you actually read the article, or just going off the headline?
It says he toured with a cracked hip and the day he died it had graduated to a full on fracture. It's highly likely that he took some painkillers to help ease the fucking horrible pain he was going through, and they had a bad reaction with the emphysema meds he was also taking.

Yeah, it got a lot worse = go see a friggin' doctor, not pop a bunch of painkillers on your own.

There are a lot of painkillers that have a vastly increased potency when alcohol is consumed with them, sometimes as much as 80% more potent. Alcohol can make a time release medication release all at once.
You have to be careful with prescription medications.

Is this also known as a negligent overdose? Sorry to soon?

Actually, that's a much better term.
