View Full Version : Don't forget to protect your irrigation systems!
We've got a blast of winter showing up overnight. We're forecast to have a low of 21 Monday night, so don't forget to protect the sprinkler plumbing that's above ground.
I don't have the agility to deal with blowing out my sprinklers this year, but they have survived self-draining in the past. [shit-happens]

Just drained mine.
I have no idea how well mine drain ,I’m renting. But I wrapped all above ground parts and laid a bag of mulch over my in ground box with my valves to try and insulate. No idea what else I can do at this point.
I've been OK in the past by shutting off the supply line in the basement and turning on the sprinklers from the timer for a full manual cycle on all zones. Rotate the ball valves to 45 degrees, and then drain the supply line by loosening the little waste caps.
The bag of mulch over the manifold/valves may be overkill, but better safe than sorry, right?
I did turn the tops of the valves to “on” and removed the little caps , got some water draining but hard to tell how much.
Thanks Gman. Just drained and removed my back-flow valve. Yep, in the rain.
Drained the above ground stuff, but came down with a cold so could not run compressor and get 'er done. Will need to see if one of my zones is leaking past the valve as I found an area that is muddy.
WU shows warm during day and only freezing on Monday and Tuesday night. There should be enough ground heat to get us past this week without damage.

Just drained my backflow and valve manifold, will blow the lines out tomorrow. Its ice chips coming down right now. Hopefully we don't get much snow or were gonna have another tree snapping day.
Rain and sleet here. Temps are dropping quick.

I drained my backflow yesterday, but didn't blow anything out, I'll fire it back up later this week, still plenty of time to water.
Good PSA.
I drained the backflow and opened the bleeder valves. I wish I could get the water out of the lines myself but don't have a compressor. Opened each zone to relieve the pressure at least.

The only thing that freezes on this early storms is the backflow (above ground part). Take some insulation and put it around the pipes that are above ground. Put a plastic trash bag over the insulation so it doesn't get wet.
This works down into the single digits. (years of commercial irrigation experience).
The in ground stuff will be fine a while longer, the ground holds a lot of heat.

This. I blew mine out too early last year and all of October was hot and dry. Its back up to 60/70s later this week.
It has been so wet this fall that I'm not sure I'll need to water further. It will take some time for my lawn to dry up from this snow. We shall see.
