So, I have this optic on order with OpticsPlanet since 7/11...6/26 if you count the gen1 version they couldn't get anymore. I'm getting it for $900 if it ever comes. I was just wondering if anybody used the Gen2s and whether they are worth it or not? I'm putting it on a 6.5 RPR, and I'm leaving for Front Sight a week from Saturday for the Precision Rifle Class...at this point, I'm using a backup since my RPR isn't ready. I'm just deciding if I should keep the order since it is a good price, or just cancel and wait to get a Cronus or Razer later since I can't use the rifle for the class. I thought ordering in June left me plenty of time...I guess not.

SWFA shows both mil and moa in stock , Optics Planet doesn't have the greatest rep when stuff isn't in stock .

I wouldn't put playing a game with me past them since there is a $200 discount on the order. They are probably just waiting for me to cancel it. Oh, I ordered the MRAD one.

What is your backup scope? Where and with whom is you're class? If I was headed to a LR class, I would want a good, solid scope and preferably the same or similar scope as I would be using after. You don't want to have a moa second focal plane scope in the class, if your going to using a mil/mil FFP after.

I would cancel your order and try to pick something up locally. It will cost more, but look what can happened when you try to get a deal online. Vortex AMG is the classic example of a backorder nightmare. I had a friend that canceled his order with a reputable retailer (more reputable that Optics Planet) after waiting over a year. The PST gen 2 is the new flavor of the month, it's new so everybody wants one. As time passes the price will fall and the availability will rise. I have already seen them sell used for $950.

Burris XTR 2 is also a solid scope for the same money. If you jump up a little, you can find really good optics. Please keep us posted, maybe we can help.

My backup LR rifle is a home built LR308 (with an Athlon FFP MRAD reticle so that is not an issue); I'm able to shoot .6 MOA with M118LR of which I have a case ready for my class. I've already decided to use my backup rifle so I'm good for the class (Front Sight - Precision RIfle) so I don't need to rush out and buy anything at this point. My question is more long term. Is the Gen2 Viper worth the wait (glass quality etc) at the $900 price point, or should I just move on to something different? ...such as the Razer, AMG, or Cronus? I really just want an honest opinion of the Gen2 Viper; If I was paying the $1,100 retail, I would go with the XTR especially since it has the 34mm tube, but I have the discount. At this point it is just should I cancel or not.

Edit: There is no time constraint at this point. I've had the RPR for a year and haven't shot it...LOL so a few more months isn't going to matter. I just want to get something that I will keep on it for the life of the rifle and not worry about it. My goal with it is 1200 so I want to make sure the optic is good enough for that so I am mostly just wondering is the Gen2 Viper good enough for $900 to meet my needs long term?

Will it work , yes , is better glass worth the extra money , always .

The gen 2 PST hasn't been in the wild too long but Vortex economy /value line , read everything but the Razor line have been hit or miss on the QC . Their warranty and CS are great but I'd rather talk about my scope being great than how fast they fixed or replaced the broken one .

Here's a list of glass I've got or had and my thoughts ,

S&B top end and would definitely buy again

Vortex Razor have 2 gen 2s now and have run 1 a year and a half and the 2nd about 4 months , the turrets have some idiosyncrasies but after they are figured out it is actually simple , would definitely buy again

NF GTG top quality and reliability , would buy again

USO never again

Burris XTR2 is not what you think when someone says Burris , it's a solid scope with a good reticle for just slightly more than the PST good value for the money

Leupold The new Mk 6 and 8 stuff they finally got their shit together and fixed the issues with the older lines

Biggest thing to remember is you're first and foremost buying a sight and then a telescope , the turrets , reticle , and tracking reliability is more important than image quality . All the glass on high end , say 2k and up , scopes is all really good now and what your buying are features and reliability .

Get the best glass with the features and reticle you want for what you can afford . Been running / shooting precision rifle matches for 14 years now and the top 3 scopes right now at the SRM stuff in Raton are Schmidt , NF , Vortex Razors.

Thank you for the info.; I would love to get a Razor, but that would take me awhile to save the additional $1,500 for it; I have about a $1,000 to spend if I did it now. There is another member here that PM'd me a couple options he would be willing to sell. I guess i'm in the analysis paralysis stage since my deadline came and went. I'm really new to long range shooting so all I really have to go on is feedback. I'm getting pretty good with my Savage 10s and LR308 in the 600 range...haven't pushed past that so I guess I will learn more at Front Sight; I'll probably know more about what I need after that. Edit: What I'm considering now is getting the Viper to start, and then moving it to the LR308, and putting a Razor on the RPR later. I definitely want something that will hold up over time as you suggest.

Another option for budget glass is the super snipers from SWFA , they have a very solid reputation .

I was waiting on the same exact scope for months from Optics Planet on the same deal you got. I finally called Vortex and they said to checkout A&A Optics. I did and they had the scope in stock and were willing to match the price. Give them a shout. I think the scope is definitely worth it. Once I called A&A I had it within a couple days.
