Question for the Fremont (and maybe Teller) County membership...

Does the Shelf Road from Canon City to Cripple Creek and the nearby camp grounds tend to be good to go, or are they frequented by undesirables?

We may do some camping down there this weekend, and it would be good to know ahead of time if the area is "special" like Lower Gold Camp (near Colorado Springs) and West Magnolia (near Nederland).

Just to be clear, I am referring to Road 9, and NOT Road 67 (Phantom Canyon).

Thanks!

Undesirables can appear anywhere at anytime. The road is really narrow at some places and there is a real danger of going of a 200 foot cliff. Closest city is Canon City. I never had any trouble on either road,I guess because of a 125 lb wolf dog and a firearm. I'd be more afraid of bears. Winter is coming!

Undesirables can appear anywhere at anytime.

Very true. Just having never been in that area before, I did not know if it was popular with the lower rungs of society like so many other parts of our great state that are so decaying.

Another reason why God gave us big-bore handguns.

I have a cabin down by Cripple Creek and it seems to me that they have yet to find the area, hopefully they never do. Haven't been down the Shelf Road in a while so I can't say for certain but around town and areas north I havent seen any signs.

I called the sheriff and they said the area is not a particularly "hot" area for crime. They get called out occasionally, but nothing any more serious than other areas. The deputy laughed when I mentioned Gold Camp Road, so I thank normal precautions are sufficient. Thanks for the intell on the road- we will be careful.

The road is closed at the falling rock blockage. You can't turn around and go back the other way. You have to back up and it sucks. It is a SHELF! I HAVE BEEN ON THAT ROAD AND HAD TO BACK UP FOR A WINNEBAGO. It is really scary. I have seen a few cars at the bottom of that valley, they fell of the road. I would go to Skaguay reservoir or the Crags before I go to Shelf Road.

I used to climb down there a bit. There are a couple campground areas with fire rings, tables, water and pit toilets that were built in a couple of the climbing areas. I've never had a problem down there. The road had a rock slide and is/was closed which is to the north of the camping and climbing areas along the short narrow shelf road area. You should be able to drive in from the south without a problem.

Sure, the road is "scary" in a short 1/4 mile area but if you get out and look it's plenty wide and not really a big deal. Other than that the rest of the road is your average creek bottom Colorado gravel road.
