View Full Version : Getting spam from Tanner show - where did they get my address?
I just got my second spam from Tanner this week. I absolutely KNOW that I didn't give them my email address and I don't go to their monthly freak show. I'm absolutely baffled as to how they figured out how to spam me. Is anyone else here getting Tanner spam and how do you think they got my email address?

Have you given your email address to any other shooting-related group that might have passed it on or sold it to Tanner? Sign up for any newsletters or contests? It's pretty common for groups or businesses to buy sets of addresses from related organizations or websites.
Yeah, they probably bought a list from another firearms manufacturer, club or group that you belong to.
I had the same question. My current theory based on the timing is that Dudley did it. I was able to unsubscribe and haven't received any more spam from them.
I think I can help you out. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll do some research. I'll send you an email every single day with my progress. The investigation could take up to a year.

And Stu wins the forum for the day.
Because it is such a chore to flag an email address/header as spam and never see it again?

I get shitloads of spam, and I'll be DAMNED if I'm going to unsubscribe from spam, because that just tells them your address is a good one, and here comes MORE spam!

Two words; Google Adsense.
Everything you do online is tracked by Google (and other companies) and that information is used to tailor advertising and spam to your tastes. Hell, I have some friends with an Alexa that have noticed if they talk about things they'll start getting spam related to that thing. They tested it by randomly saying the word "Barbados" a few times and within hours they started getting spam and ads online for "Travel to Barbados".

That's nothing! I was going to buy a book on ebay about UFO's and got the blue screen of death. By the time I recovered the system the book was gone from ebay. NSA crashed it? CIA? FBI? USAF Cyber Command? Spam is the least of my worries.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Everyone who is concerned about their privacy needs to worry less about the NSA and more about what Google, Facebook, and Amazon are doing with your prviate data. I no longer search with Google, have never used Facebook, and do what I can to minimize what data Amazon can harvest off me. Duckduckgo is the search engine and Brave is the browser for privacy advocates. Firefox works well too if you use plug-ins like AdBlock and No-Script.

I'm still waiting for my Barbados spam. How long does it usually take?

Nice test drive....I'm curious..:)
Me too. I've never seen any marketing related to Amazon Alexa. I have witnessed my MacBook Pro listening to my TV. Typed into a search engine "What is..." and the next prompted word is something that was on TV

I just held a convo about Barbados within ear shot of Alexa.
I didn't buy it, but it just showed up one day....and I expressed concern about it monitoring everything at the time. I noticed that when a TV commercial said "Alexa"...the damn thing lit up on the top and was ready.

Yeah, I have Dish, and they were running commercials regarding Alexa integration with the Hopper. "Alexa Pause", "Alexa Play"...freaked the Echo out. I hear that South Park on their season premiere triggered all of the voice assistants which resulted in some interesting items in shopping carts.
Business Insider: The 'South Park' premiere set off a lot of fans' Alexa and Google Home devices with hilarious phrases (http://www.businessinsider.com/south-park-premiere-set-off-a-lot-of-alexa-and-google-home-devices-2017-9)

I never liked the thing, even though it can do some cool stuff. I'm wondering if perhaps the unit might get "lost or broken" in the next few months.
:)
most spam I ever got was because of dudley the dirtbag. he sells or shares (probably sells) your name and info with everyone.
I was getting one at around 09. I reported spam. I suspect the same person ( or rm**) as well.

You know, the science of marketing is interesting. Today, it was around 11 or so (so, lunchtime), and I saw an ad for Jimmy Johns. I'd actually been thinking I was hungry, and on seeing the ad realized I hadn't had them in a while, so I went ahead and ordered. I think it's pretty safe to say that their system is set up so that they pay more for ads during lunchtime, so that's when they get shown.
Well played Jimmy Johns. Well played indeed.
Just curious if you ask these devises for advise on the best AR to kill your CD collection of The Presidents of the United States if the SS will come knocking on your door
My guess is that Alexa will get confused and you'll get nowhere...

10yrs ago, i thunked RMGO was something good. Damn, couldn't of been more wrong. That shithead dudley sells my info and every damn week it's a new "grass roots" org that needs money, or some sort of politician that needs a donation.
