View Full Version : Cheap truck paint job

Bought my Toyota 4WD pickup new in 1989. Dang thing still runs great and just won't die. It's only needed wear-and-tear stuff like new brake pads, clutch, fan belts, etc spread out over many years. For at least a decade, all the mechanics have said "they don't make them like this anymore" or "this was a great series engine."

Less than 200k miles on it (I work at home and have a summer car) but showing it's age; badly faded paint and a few minor rust spots on the body, rear bumper is rusted out. What's the least I could pay for a basic paint job on the truck and matching steel topper? Macco gave me some BS that was more than the trucks value. Don't care about warranties, fancy finishes, or detail work. Any suggestions for a guy in the Boulder area? Only want to pay enough to reduce the pressure from my wife to sell it ;-)

Depending on what you want to sell it for let me know, lol! As for paint if maco didn't give you a cheap quote I have no clue and am not much help.

You may want to get the timing belt replaced, unless you already have, it is way overdue.
If the timing belt goes, it will trash your engine. Replacing even with a junk yard one will cost more than the truck is worth.

Sorry I’m no help with your question.

Brush on some CARC mil surplus. Better than any spray on finish. Tacticool

Ha! I've thought about it. Don't have the time for all the taping and want the rust dealt with. Would rather pay a Latino or Redneck working out of their backyard.

Regarding selling, these days, I'm not sure anyone knows how to use a stick shift or manual cranks on windows anymore.

Just tell her that the truck, her and wine only get better with age. Put a little foundation make up on the rusty spots and you love her just as much as the day you married her....errr bought it.

Have it vinyl wrapped in a nice color.

Bed Liner.

Ah.... I saw a biker do his entire harley with bed liner. Looked interesting, and bomb-proof.

I just saw a newer full size truck on the highway this weekend that was fully done in bed liner.

Buy the gallon cans of BL, a few rollers and go to town. I highly recommend a good respirator, lots of ventilation (fans) and an open area to apply it. We did a trailer frame i built with BL, people down the block were getting a buzz from the fumes.

Maaco sucks for body work, and they are over-priced. If you do the bodywork, they shoot a decent paintjob. If you can get it all smooth, I have seen solid color wraps for as little as $500. Those last 3-5 years depending on how much you sun it.

I think this is the best way to go. Make sure you address the rust before rolling it on though.

Interesting long-term on the wrap idea: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/buying-maintenance/a28880/vinyl-wrap-removal/

CARC is going to be a tough search. GCI military paint is available on ebay.

I have done both bed liner and plasti-dip, I would recommend plasti-dip over bed liner unless you were to get it done professionally.

Are you sure it needs new paint? Have you spoken to any detailing places about doing paint correction? Sounds like there's no way it would come out great, or even good, but maybe a big improvement could be made for a few hundred dollars? [Dunno]
