This is something that I have been looking forward to sharing once it was official. St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs is the first Colorado school to have a Competitive Shotgun Team that is actually recognized by the school where team members can earn a letter in the sport of shooting! Currently we compete under the governing body SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program) in shotgun sports only, Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, etc. Hopefully we can expand that to other disciplines in the coming years, IDPA, IPSC, USPSA, 3 gun, etc. Expanding into competitions with scary black guns might be difficult but we are still going to try! Currently we have seventeen kids enrolled on the team, they span all four years of high school and both genders. About half of team come from backgrounds without any firearm knowledge or experience. Which to me is an incredible opportunity to grow the sport of shooting as well as an opportunity to educate and inform about the importance of the 2nd Amendment! I realize this isn't directly related to this forum but I think we can all get excited about growing the shooting sports and increasing the number of 2nd Amendment supporters! I already have several of the kids extremely interested in 3 gun!

Thanks for taking the time to read!

And just to clarify to give credit where credit is due, I had very little to do with getting the team started. A parent/fellow coach deserves the credit for getting the ball rolling and starting the team:)

Nice. Is it really a "first"? I read about high school competitive shoots back around the '50s, but maybe they were clubs and not school team events.

"Current" might be more accurate than "first". I know there have been teams in the past but I don't know the details of them. There are a few schools that have ROTC teams obviously, I believe they only shoot 22s, but I'm may be wrong about that. We are just the only current competitive shotgun team.

So there are quite a few other SCTP teams in CO, SCTP is a nation wide organization for youth shotgun sports. Unfortunately none of the other teams in Colorado are recognized by their school so they don't have the chance to letter or have any association with the school. The kids will get to compete locally (mostly front range), regional tournaments, and at SCTP nationals next July, which several thousand competitors attend each year. We're hopeful that others schools will catch on to grow the sport even more!
